OK. I have read the guide at SMW Central....however...I still need a lot of questions answered on using Lunar Magic. So maybe you guys can help me out. There are a bit noobish, yeah, but I need them answered. I remember i spent ages trying to use Reason.....until someone answered a very few noobish questions for me!

1. Ok, so off I go. I think to myself, hmm let me start simple. I'll add an extra enemy to the level Yoshis Island 1 (where you are automatically taken upon opening the rom 105). I click on a sprite in the Add sprites window, and click back on the main screen. No enemy appears though...just that box that looks like im trying to drag to select many objects. What am I doing wrong here? Same this applies with adding objects...

2. I try to go to the overworld map.....how do I get there? I can just about naviagte through levels......

3. I try to add another exit to a level....however a box pops up saying screen number of exit to add/modify ......help? How exactly do you make the action 'key into keyhole' become an exit?

4. Changing backgrounds seems to be done completely through tile editing.....which takes forever (But! I will do it if no other way!) Is there no way to just 'copy and paste' a background image into the editor?

4(b) How the heck do you edit backgrounds anyway? It says open up the 16x16 tile editor......but...jumbled up graphics is all i see! What's the next step?

5. Can you add extra backgrounds (or tiles) in from other games? How exactly do you do this? I know you're going to put something like Change f02 to 67 depending on the X and Y position....lol I have NO idea what this means. Where is this address located? How do you access it from lunar magic? Do you have to save the tiles as images, and then 'put' them into the address? OR do you have to have another rom in order to take the tiles from? Bearing in mind....I do not want to OVERWRITE any existing tiles or sprites...I want to add more to the game.

6. How do you use that Pallette editor thing? I open it up.....and sit there looking at it not knowing what the heck is going on......And what are the 'change index of graphics/change properties in header for?

7. Bypass music and time limit setting? There are some slots below it than say Not in use....is this how you add extra music to the game? By using one of the slots not in use?

8. On level 106....at the top of the screen abover the forest, there are tiles with clouds on and a orange type background. NOW on the original game....there is no way to fly up that high.......how do you reach it? Is there a cutoff point for sprites? This ties in with my next question....how do you make the screen scroll up when you make the level higher?

9. In smw, there are boxes, which when hit reveal hints and stuff. How do you change the text in these? In fact, how do you change the text full stop?

Sorry for all these questions. When answering, just assume i have NO KNOWLEDGE OF GAMES OR PROGRAMMING AT ALL. There should be an exact step by step guide, taking you through editing your first level and your first overworld map.

Thanks for answering these guys! I really just opened up the editior and just sat there looking at it thinking......where do I begin? Why won't that sprite go from the sprite window to the main screen? What do all those numbers and leters mean by the sprites in the add sprites window.....and so forth.... lol!

Cheers, Acmlms board!

I suggest reading the Lunar Magic help file. It will answer a lot of your basic questions. Also, don't be afraid to click a button or select an option just to see what happens. The editor will usually warn you if you're about to do something dangerous. Here's some of the answers to the one you asked.

1. Right click to place the object/sprite. You have to be in the proper mode to add one (click on the ledge, cliff or shell)

2. Editors -> Overworld Editor Window.

3. Key into keyhole is not a type of screen exit. It's a level-based exit, which is handled by the overworld editor.

4. There's one way. Level -> Copy Background Image. Type in the level number of the level you want to copy the background from. The proper GFX file has to be set, or else it'll look like garbage. But for the first time you make a background, you'll have to do it the long way; setting it up yourself.

5. Yes, it's actually simpler than you think. It's called ExGFX.

6. Click on the color you would like to edit.

7. Actually, those tracks are just nothing. Selecting them can sometimes mess up the sound. In theory, we would use those tracks to add extra music, but until then...

8. I'm pretty sure you could climb that high. But at any rate, the rate at which the background scrolls is controlled by the the dialog box under Level -> Change Other Properties.

9. From the overworld editor, go Overworld -> Edit Message Box Text.

I'd like to reply here before someone comes in and tells you to "read the fucking manual."

This is because I'm way too nice. Don't take this as a rule, I'm the exception. I hardly ever post in the SMW forum anymore anyway. People will not answer questions found in the help file for Lunar Magic. You seem reasonably intelligent, so I will answer some of your questions. This is a good place to check out if you wonder if you should ask a particular question.

1. First, make sure you are in the correct mode. To add a sprite, use the sprite editing mode, and so on. These are the buttons just to the left of the "Add x window" buttons. Do not drag the sprite, select it in the add window with the left mouse button on the name of the sprite. You place an object or sprite by right-clicking on the level. Left clicking will make a selection box. You really should have tried this.

2. There is an "overworld editor" button. It's the one with the picture of a castle from the main screen.

4. No such feature exists.

4(b). Open the background editor and the 16x16 editor. In the 16x16 editor, use the arrow keys up and down to scroll through pages of tiles until you find the one that uses the tile found in the background. Click on a tile to paint with, and right click on the background in the background editor. You can figure it out from there.

5. Read up on ExGFX. SMW Central can help you.

6. Use the help file.

7. At the present time you cannot add extra music to the game with Lunar Magic. There is no program that will input music from outside the game and put it into one of those slots. Music editing is considered an advanced topic.

8. Use the "Change Properties in Header" dialog. There's a box called "Layer 1 (FG) Vertical Scrolling." This is what you're after.

9. This is accessed from the overworld editor. It might seem like it would be stored with the level, but it's really stored with the overworld.

You're welcome.

And next time, read the fucking manual.

And next time, read the fucking manual.

Didn't see that coming.

Here's another tip: Just fool around with Lunar Magic. Click everything you can find to see what it does. That's how I figured it out.

People who have answered #7 so far are wrong. There is no more room to add music. What that list is, is a list of pointers, most of which were not used up.

Thanks guys! Ya know, I'll probably be back here in a few days with another exhausting truckload of questions! Right-click.....so simple..

BTW the only read-me file I got with lunar magic is the one that says What's new in this version. It didn't contain info on any of the issues I raised above. Thanks anyway!

1. Dont start another thread with a truckload of questions. Look through the help file first. (Its there, look for it, everyone else has it, you have it too) Then look through SMW Central. After that, search the boards. Then if you still cant figure it out, ask.

2. There wasnt going to be a 2, but I already put a 1, and I am too tired and lazy to go erase the 1.

The help file isn't the readme. In Lunar Magic, hit the "help" dropdown menu and hit "contents."

I have the help file in an actual file, it's even on my desktop for quick reference.
It should come included.

Wait.... hopefully you extracted the folder so the help file will appear right? I don't remember if it didn't appear before extracting but alot of things don't work before extracting the zip folder.
