First of all.....HEY THERE! Great to discover that a lot of people are dedicated to something I've only just recently discovered, hacking. By recently discovered, I mean just became interested enough in the subject to try it out for myself, but I have got super stuck already! So I've got a couple of questions to ask y'all!

1. I recently downloaded Luna Magic, and 'attempted' to edit Super Mario World with it.....however it seems that you need to know a lot about programming to use it. I saw the screenshots, and it seemed super easy.....Is there an 'easy faq guide' for it somewhere around?

2. Let's say I try hacking a rom, and become really downhearted, and decide to give up. Do you know of anyone who would be willing to finish the job....i.e. make a modified rom for me, and how much they would charge/how long they would take/etc....?

3. How far along is the snes rom hacking process? Is it possible for me to do virtually anything to a snes rom? By this I mean add any amount of enemies/areas/sprites/backgrounds, increase the rom size, add wavs/mp3's...that sort of thing? Would I have to only use SNES sprites/tiles or music/spc file, or could I use any resource, such as add MegaDrive sprites, or chuck in a background from Metal Slug or something?

4. Would it be possible to add other type of gameplay to the rom? Such as make a 3 in 1....part RPG, part platformer and part shooti em up? Also, do you know of any good guides for editing RPG's/shoot em ups? I'd like to add pre-rendered backgrounds to make an alternate Super Mario RPG....

5. What's a good place to get hacked roms from? lol if it's a dodgy question, just type Google.com in =)

6. Is this legal, as long as you don't try to sell the modified roms?

7. What's up with those pirate games, such as Super Donkey Kong 99, Somari and Sonic blast 1986? How did those pirates modify those games? The same way you guys do or do they have access to much more capable equipment? (I'm only asking because a lot of pirate games came out aaaaaages ago, and it seems that rom hacking has only took off post millenium...)

8. Is it possible to save the games to CD and make some sort of Autorun file...such as most newer games have?

9. Can you use hacked roms for internet play using snes9x, etc? If so....how come no-one has made an 8 player Super Mario Kart yet? lol

10. Is there an chance of getting a MUCH EASIER rom hacker/level editor in the future? I've used mapmakers, such as Tony Hawks before.....lol. And I'm excellent at the Timesplitters Future Perfect Mapmaker, although it must be said, I usually make Story maps, and use a load of logic....tbh I've wondered about getting an X-box version....the Gamecube one runs out of memory super quick...
Those are the sort of mapmakers I'm used to, basic ones where you click what you want and place it where you want, then put in the action you want done or performed on or around it. lol I know it must be hard work making level editors, so surely, someone could design a Super User Friendly one?

11....and finally, what's the best way to edit or make custom sprites? Or are there people who will do them for you if asked nicely?

Sorry about the length of the thread, but I just wanted to cover all bases. Thanks you guys!

I will try to answer some of your questions:

It is easy to use, you don't need to know a lot about programming to use it.

And the only tutorial about Lunar Magic I know of is a tutorial about the Overworld editor. The link is in the forum announcement for SMW Hacking.

Normally no one here wants to take over your hack because they have better things to do. But I have never heard of someone wanting to pay so his hack gets finished... lol

That depends on the game you're hacking, but most popular games have an editor that can add/remove things.
You can also replace textures from most games if they aren't compressed.
Only music hacking hasn't been established very far, and only a few editors support it.

Lunar Expand can expand SNES ROMs up to 64 Mbit.

That is hard, and you have to know a lot of ASM (the programming langauge used by the SNES) to do it.

Look here to find all kinds of information for Super Mario RPG. For replacing the pre-rendered backgrounds you probably need a tile editor, I don't really know.

google.com, as they are scattered all over the internet.

Actually already owning the original game on your computer is legal unless you ripped it yourself off of your actual game.

Autostart windows are, again, done by coding, though autostarting a game from CD with an specific emulator is probably possible. (You can also do some kind of installation script with batch files)

Of course.

Well, Super Mario Kart only supports 4 players natively, 8 players would, again, require ASM coding. But other from that it should work, just not many people do it.

You should also be aware that you cannot do everything and anything to a SNES game. Everything you do must be within the limits of SNES hardware itself. ASM isn't easy to learn, either; but if you do learn it you can make a game do anything you want it to, still keeping hardware in mind, like making a Donkey Kong fighting game or something. But that's the most advanced ASM hacking. You'd have to be a God to do that.

A little to add:

5. (where to find) - Romhacking.net would be a good place to start, as far as finding the IPS patches.
6. (legality question) - The topic's a little up in the air. The EmuFAQ documents the debate rather well, making the best attempt at legitimately supporting the arguments that I've seen. At least the parts I've read.
7. (pirate games question) - I'm not sure about those specifically, but they very well could be ROM hacks, or they could have been homebrew games attempting to copy the originals.
8. (autorun question) - Sure, just look up how to write an autorun.inf file, and have it launch the ROM with the emulator. Only problem is, of course, that you can't save to the CD, so you'll want to play around with the emulator's settings before you burn it to the CD.

These guys were Chinese. That means they were =

A) Smart

B) Able to sell anything in the Chinese market because Nintendo didn't want to deal with them. Now nintendo has made a system called the I Que or something
specifically for the Chinese to prevent this.

C) They are not really pirates. people put them down as pirates but they aren't. Since they programmed the games themselves all they did that was illegal was steal a trade marked/copyrighted (not sure which one it is) character. My definition of a pirated game is a hacked one removing the presence of the original creators and being sold so that the profits go to the pirates, not the orginal company. It is not illegal to make your own game as long as you don't steal characters.

D) as said above they did not modify games, Super Donkey Kong 99, Somari and Sonic blast 1986 (or sonic blast 6) were programmed from scratch.

E) I don't know about the equipment. Probably just some cheap old program for some cheap old computer.
