Three years to the day after the initial release of an admittedly rather spotty translation of Squaresoft's "Rudra no Hihou" the new version is ready! It includes quite a few improvements, including a fully variable-width font for the dialogues, a brand new and wonderfully written script, a redone opening sequence and extra letters for enemy names. The real star of the show is the script, though! It�s been fantastically cared for by M of Returner Games, whose work on Front Mission: Gun Hazard you may already be familiar with.

This patch is an almost completely new animal, and if you ever thought at all that the writing might�ve seemed a little flat in the old version, be sure to give this one a try!

I actually found out about the translation patch for this game after finding your site about a week ago Gideon. I then decided to wait till today for the rewrite. I've only been playing it for a about an hour so far, but everything seems excellent. Thank you very much for all your hard work.

One thing that seems does seem weird to me. I prefer to use the 2xSal video enhancing filter (i'm aware that Hi-Res needs to be on and it is) but every time text appears the video reverts back to normal mode. Playing without enhancing filters isn't a big deal though.

I'm looking forward to your Fire Emblem 3 and Mystic Ark translations as well. They seem to be coming along great.

Yeah, there can be conflicts in emulators between SNES Hires and various graphics filters. I don't really know why; I just hack the games

Since Leno (on IRC) is expressing doubt about the quality of the font work, let me assure folks that the reason for the blur in the image above is due to resizing the image in Paint Shop Pro. The full-size image follows:

Actually, when played through Hi-Res without any enhancement filters in SNES 9x, the font looks even smoother then in that screen shot for me.

This game is very fun. I came across a sudden boost in difficult recently and i'm diggin it.

Gideon Zhi: You are the man, I love this translation. My friend bought this cart back in the 90's. I'm glued to this game, I'm playing the warrior scenerio first and I'm up to the second town. This translation hack shows three years of work and I love the quality.

I usually just lurk around here to download hacks but I finally registered just so I could say thank you for translating this game. A lot of people, including myself, would never have had a chance to play it otherwise. It's hard as hell at some points, but the magic system makes it addictive as hell too.

I like the spell-naming system in this game and the relentless difficulty. I played it a little before and stopped a little ways in. All I remember is that I spent an hour at the beginning outfitting my character with a bunch of generic spells like "FIRE" and "HEAL" and "REVIVE" and "TOMATO" and "RADIATION" and "SIMONBOB" and "GIDEONZHI".

The thing I don't like is that there aren't any hidden spells that you can only get by naming something, say, "GideonZhi", only overpriced crappy spells. I like how if you put like "Volcano" or "Lavashot" it creates a fire spell, though. Thanks for that. How many key-words are there for the elements? Can you make a list? This game's system seems kind of wonky-awesome.

also "ultima" and stuff only generates dumb things, but I think meteor is actually a crappy meteor attack

I think in Japanese it was similar. If you entered something like TATATATA, it causes something funny like hopping letters over the screen. And the spell cost just should balance out the game, if I'm not mistaken. You actually level pretty fast, but in this game levels only play a lower role, since the HP and MP raise slowly compared to other RPGs. It's the mantras. The game will be easier, if you rely on ... oh, I'm not gonna spoil it

As for this new translation, I was already satisfied with the first one, but the new font really looks nice. After the this years' exams are done, I'll take a look on this nice new translation.
Although I more and more begin to understand the Japanese version (due to the good Japanese grammar which sometimes allows you at least to guess something, even if you don't know all kanji properly), this translation looks pretty neat. I also own the original cart in its nice illustrated packing.

The spell system is based on a large dictionary of approximately 2,000 words, which it seeks through when you enter a spell name. Each word is accompanied by two bytes which determine its cost, strength, and effect. For the English version, we simply translated all of the words in the dictionary. We added a few, too, based on other words in the database; thus, spells from the Megami Tensei series work. There were a number of interesting entries in the database, including a reference to the 70s super robot anime "Raideen."

Functionally the system should behave approximately the same in English as it did in Japanese. There may be a few extremely small differences, especially insofar as allowing for twice the number of letters goes, but most of it should work fine, since it was originally syllable-based anyway.

Heh, speaking of the spell names, I think I caught a typo, instead of "Teonus" the 13 MP wind spell is "Teomus," every other one is "nus" and I'm fairly certain that's what the guy at the bar used too.

That's not a typo, that's just the system unfortunately not working correctly. You'll find that it's not supposed to just look up "teonus" from its database; rather, it starts at the last letter (I think) and does a binary search for the longest match. Once it's found one, if it hasn't built an effect for the full word, it does a binary search starting at the next as-yet unused letter. In this case, it could be finding "Eonus" in the list and using that as a full word-piece.
