Thanks to Kawa a while back, and my gathered knowlege, Windows XP has something called an OS-Tan.

Let me tell you right now, that I lovvum. <3 <3 <3

Is there any -Tans you have a pic of and like to talk about?

(Note: If this turns into a flamewar about the OS's themselves, I will... um, do something thats painful and makes you think about what you've done. Thank you. )

Edited note for appropriateness

Duh, I know what OS-Tan means! Why would I make a thread about it? Expectations about me too low? Sheesh.

Then explain what you mean in that sentence. Just to check that you are right.

Like CE-tan XP-tan ME-tan 98-tan. I did have an complete set of all the windows-tans as my desktop for not so long ago.

OS-tans are female "mascot" characters to various Operating Systems. There are also OS-tans for systems like Mozilla lololol (despite this clearly being a browser, not an OS).

The characters originally appeared on... one of those Japanese imageboard places, afaik.

The "-tan" honorific is not really a real Japanese honorific -- it's more how a little kid might say "-chan". I guess it's to up the whole "cute" factor another notch.

My favorite little piece of OS-tan artwork features XP-tan with a big bowl of Memory, which she's eaten, and she wants some more.

The OS-tans came from Futaba, and they're one of the only imageboard fads that I like.

And how can you not like Wikipe-tan?

I am so cool, I hacked my XP startup screen to have XP and 2k on it.

Not an easy feat to do in 16 colors...

Given the fact it's 16 colors... Nice, ugly or somewhere in-between?

I mean, I know startup screens are limited but I'd think some trickery would be involved.

Why is it in 16 colours anyways? I thought startup screens were capable of more than that? They were last time I hacked one....

Goddamned Japan. They ruin everything. They even managed to fuck up G.I. Joe by putting him in a Japanese cartoon. He's a real AMERICAN hero, not another subject of your lame-ass shows with more clichés than a Hollywood movie.

Also, I despise anyone who calls them by that accursed name in the topic title. They're regular girls from japanese cartoons drawn in a certain size with colors and clothes that match the theme. Stop speaking in half-japanese words and stick to English, please. Most of us struggle enough with that.

On another note who the hell makes this stuff anyhow? And why? This ties in with the Cars hentai I was talking about before. Why do these Japs and/or Japanophiles spend their time desecrating whatever hasn't been desecrated? I mean, when you start seeing fucking MISSINGNO. hentai (it exists - believe it), you know someone out there is fucked up in head. The same applies to this, although not on as an extreme level. Why don't you just look at normal girls in that art style instead of a bunch crappily modeled after an operating system or a website? What's so special about these ones; a so called "brand-name"? Our childhood memories have probably already been shattered, there's no need to destroy our current ones.

...

...

...

*whew* Got that off my chest. But seriously, minus all the swearing, that is my stance on this. I ask you, all of you: Why do they make this? Why do you like all this when they are clearly just normal japanese cartoon girls, occasionally with decorations from what they parody? I mean, what's so special about them? Why do you speak in half-japanese?

Personally, I don't mind the OS-tans in the original context I first came across them.

It seemed to me that somebody with a sense of humor about computing created a bunch of female, anime-styled characters with personalities based on the flaws and strengths of the Operating Systems they represent. These characters were then depicted in little gag-strip style manga where they poked fun at these flaws.

From that start though, the fandom did go somewhere that I don't like as much -- where the characters seem not so much to have personalities and such as much as they are just yet another anime sex symbol. Then came a bunch of other -tans with even less substance behind them.

I liked the nerdy jokes to start with though.

I was particularly amused that Norton was a pervy old doctor... seems in keeping with what Norton does to Windows in reality And ME-tan's ditziness is appropriate.

Thank you for stereotyping an entire nation and all the people within it.

Now that I know you despise people on the basis of one facet of their speech, I can better judge your character.

The funny thing is that I had considered you to be a pretty level-headed person, with few prejudices.

*shrug* It was more of a spur of the moment thing (combined with stress from annoying thunderstorms keeping me off my computer). I didn't actually mean all that racist-related stuff either. Also, have you ever gone into a thread, read it, start a really long post, then just say "forget it" and not post it? Yeah, I do that a lot (too often, in fact), and that time, I instead thought "what the hell, why not?"

Although Tarale's explanation of Norton has reassured me that there is some sanity in these drawings.

Well, like I said, the original concept I came across at least. I much preferred it when there was that element of humor and fun to it.

I actually rather dislike the sex-symbol thing it's turned into, with the characters depicted more or less as Windows-branded flesh.

But the original idea was so much fun! It was a cute way of poking fun at all the screw-ups of Windows and other OSes and software! With XP-tan always needing to eat more memory, and ME-tan microwaving things she shouldn't.... (I think it was a can of beans or something... it went boom)

For some reason, Microsoft felt 16 colors was enough for the start up screen for Windows XP...

As for why the Japanese do this? It's their culture...they like cheesy, corny, silly things to name a few things. They like seeing their celebrities humilated on TV (and the celebrities don't mind that). That is something rarely seen in America. asdf, you should consider the flip side, there are things Japanese think all Americans ruin...

I take the OS-tans at the same level as Taryn does. Embrace them for what they're meant to be, not for... what certain artists decided to do with them.
