yeah, I just felt sbiffy and decided to post this  .
Im teching myself to play guitar (from a "Dummies" book -- hey, they're pretty good!). I couldnt afford lessons, and I bought a really (and I mean bottom of the line) crappy guitar. $50 on amazon. lol. it plays fine, and it IS surprisingly in tune with other guitars (pretty much perfectly) for the price it cant be beat I guess... it does seem a bit hard to play, and I was having some trouble fretting at first, but Im getting better each time I practice. but it's really annoying when your fingers hit other strings when fretting and it screws you up -- happens to me quite a bit. I really dont know much about guitars -- this is the first one Ive ever owned... I knew it wasnt a great quality guitar when I got it, but Im happy. Ive wanted to lean to play for years (as long as I can remember), and its MUCH more satisfying than playing my keyboard. I plan to buy an electric guitar when I get some $$$. Any idea as to what a good (yet affordable) electric guitar would be? I was thinking around $300-$500 in price, but less is good I guess. Im only asking because I (really) know nothing about guitars. |

| First off, everything comes with time. Try to correct your mistakes, but don't think they'll be fixed overnight. Read, and DO take lessons when you can afford it money/time-wise, and make sure that you don't form bad habits that help you now, because they might hurt your playing down the road.
Also, what guitar you will want depends greatly on what kind of music you like, which we don't know. |

yeah, Im into heavy metal, death metal, and classical mostly -- but I enjoy playing all styles of music. I wouldve gotten a better one now, but I couldnt get a job this summer -- well, I could have, but I couldnt get there. 
anyway, Im gonna practice as hard as I can. Ive waited for years for this. as for bad habits, I thought it would be easier to fret with different fingers instead of the appropriate ones, and it is, but I didnt do that because I figured it would hurt me in the long run. I just think its... awesome. I know im no hero (was that a pun on the game guitar hero? I never played it), but its just... fun for me. fun I havent had in a long time. it just feels great to hear your guitar sing -- even just a simple chord like D (my favorite so far). music fulfills me in a way I cant explain. especially music with powerful emotions (hate, love, fear, sadness, joy). thats why I like metal and classical. they show extreme emotion in a pure form thats just... magical. I love my keyboard too, just not as much. hopefully I'll have as much talent as I do with my keyboard (im pretty good), and not as much as I do with art -- I cant draw a stick figure -- I hated art class last year. |

| I wasn't saying you shouldn't have gotten the inexpensive one you have now. That's definately the way to go if you've never played. I'm talking your next guitar. Save up the extra couple of hundred dollars and go for something that'll last you longer.
If you're into death, you should look into models that either have a fixed bridge or a trem that you can lock down. I play an SG with the innards ripped out and replaced. I hate gibson's rhythm/treble switch and tone knobs. And I hate humbuckers. But I love the look and the fixed bridge. I'd rather be playing an Ibanez but I'd have to lock down the tremolo and that'd take all the fun out of it |

Also, I'm curious: What kind of guitar do you have now? Electric/Acoustic? What kind of amp? I could hook you up with some metal amp settings if you'd like. |

| umm... if you set the fine tuning knobs on a locking trem correctly when you tune up in the first place you shouldn't have to unlock the nut to drop d, just do it on the fine tuning knob. Takes a few seconds.
Locking nuts are a pain in the ass though and I generally leave them off and just lock down the trem. |

| I don't think that a newbie should add a floating trem to their list of things that will piss them off while learning guitar. If the pros of a locking bridge (staying in tune, mainly) outweigh the cons (longer time to change strings/use alternate tunings/etc) then go ahead, but if the locking bridge is also a floating trem (Floyd Rose or copy), get the damn thing blocked so it only bends down. | |||

I figure its best not to rush things, and Im working on mastering an a series chord progression before moving on. ( A A A A, D D D D, E, E, E, E, A, A, A, A is the progression) I can play the chords, it just takes me time to switch between them -- thats what Im working on. Im definitely buying an electric guitar -- but it could be a LOOONG time from now. |

That'll be something you learn more of down the road. You've probably been taught major chords, which would put you in the key of A Major. |

| Actually, the chord letter alone is usually understood to be the major with no special flavor thrown in. If it's diminished or minor or whatever it'll say. I assumed he meant A maj, etc. so his notation wasn't really incorrect. | |||
