I haven't heard from my friend Caroline in a few days.

I read on her xanga a little while ago that she'll be gone for the next month or two to rehab in Florida.

I hate it when I don't know what's going on with friends.

I knew she smoked pot some. And also that she did x. I gave her my lecture about that and then let it go since she was gonna do whatever she was gonna do. Apparently she's done coke too. I'm guessing she got caught with something.

But I don't understand it. She's only 16, (I hate to say she's a kid, that makes me feel old and isn't totally fair to the mature teenagers) and she's smart. And she's pretty and athletic (she can beat my ass in tennis) and has everything going for her.

Why even get into drugs?

I mean, we all know how dangerous they are. And we all know about consequences. Me? I'd be too afraid to even try something like that the first time.

I don't get it.

A great handful of people at my work do tons of things.

Me? I've hardly even drank. I don't even smoke cigarettes (simply just a waste of money in my opinion).

I don't know. I just, simply don't understand it myself.

I guess its influence that gets to people. Its not like I'd be afraid to try things, I just don't see any reason as to why I'd need to. It would be a worthless effort.

Well, she might have been caught with the coke. In which case... yeah, a case could be made.

I think unless the drug is addictive, people should have the right to destroy there own bodies if they so wish. I am so sick of the government trying to tell me how to think, feel, and live my life. If I want to get high and drunk in the privacy of my own home without hurting anyone, that should be fine. Now I dont think people should be driving while under the influence of anything though. Sucks for you friend, I bet they are going to have random drug testing and other junk.

Whenever you hear of drug addicts, you always hear "Why?"

Could be a ton of different reasons. A lot of people try to slap different general reasons on the subject (Parental issues, peer pressure, boredom and experimentation, ect) but none of them really explain the entire group. It's a case-by-case thing.

This is an entirely different topic. You should probably make a thread in the debate forum if you want to talk about that.

I don't get it either. I'm against drugs, alcohol, smoking... I don't care if others do it, just not my good friends or family. It doesn't make life better ($20 Vyper comes in here to whine about his tourette's) and certainly does not make your problems go away. *insert corny "I'M HIGH/DRUNK ON LIFE" crap here*

Anyway, I hope your friend is doing okay and that you hear from her soon.

I would contest that drinking can make life better, but I am probably the last person who should be lecturing people on the do's and dont's of drinking

Cocaine, if that is what's involved here, is an entirely different story.

No, alcohol gives the illusion of life being better. Destroying your liver (if you drink that much) is... far from making life better.

I think weed makes life better, it releives stress, makes you more social, makes you happy, and then you get the munchies and have yourself a nice little weed nap, wake up and feel refreshed and ready to go.

Alcohol's not bad if you just drink occasionally because you like having a drink.

Me? I love the taste of beer, and I like having beers I've never had before when I go to new places. I don't drink to get blitzed of because I need it to have a good time, I just enjoy the drink when I do.

Is that so bad?

I think weed makes a pretty good anti depressant for me (since everything else has had nasty side effects) but I still don't smoke it. I would never consider going out and buying it, and smoking is nasty. Plus I have my singing voice to worry about. It's bad enough being around band members who smoke.
Plus, people who smoke pot more than a handfull of times a year tend to more obviously be stoners, and that's not necessarily cool.

But yeah, Caroline was doing X every day and lost her virginity while on drugs and had done coke a few times at least. So that's no good.

I can understand people drinking because they enjoy the taste, or some such. Alcohol is actually somewhat good for you in moderation, but.. Getting drunk off your ass from it (and purposely so) is something I never grasped the understanding of.. A lot of people in that state are just incoherent and unable to act properly, not something I see as enjoyable.. And the next day people just seem to have trouble remembering it? So they can't even find it amusing most of the time to reflect on how stupid they were. Then theres the hangovers (for those that get them) and of course the many dangers of over drinking, etc, etc..

Drinking isn't bad, but purposely getting drunk is something I've never, ever understood, and not something I've ever been good reason to personally test and see. No one has ever explained it to me either, as to why anyone does, they just do and leave it at that. (Trying to unwind with a good drink or some such? Okay, I can see drinking a bit would be nice like that, but flat out smashed? I'd really love it to be explained.)

As for the whole pot deal.. Uh, I doubt she went to rehab for that indeed, it isn't inherently that big of a deal (at all) compared to the monster (mess you up) drugs out there. (I've done none mind you, but I know these things by now.) I don't understand why anyone would take any hard drugs either.. I can see someone smoking pot for obvious reasons, but the harsh and dangerous stuff just seems idiotic to ever even consider.

People do weird things I'll never probably understand though.

Cara: Yeah. There's this one line I hear almost everyday at work:
"Man I'm getting totally fucked up tonight! I'm going to get wasted off my ass!"
(I've heard many say close to exactly that, plenty of times).

So yeah, on purpose they'll get drunk. I don't get it either. The whole puking thing kind of scares me, as much as a baby as I can be about that. But hey, I've only thrown up twice in my life, so its kind of disgusting to me.

Yes. But isn't there other things you could do for the same effect? Play a game. Watch TV. etc

I'm just throwing out my opinion on that ... not trying to sound like I'm telling you how you should run your life.

Like I said, the majority of people at my work do a lot of things. Honestly I'd wish they didn't do some of the things they did, but it doesn't really change my judgement of them. I still like them and respect them, its just a little part inside me that "wishes" they'd stop doing some stuff. But oh well. Hopefully they'll stop themselves in the future.

Maybe not the best idea for that, but that's the way I look at it I guess.

That's just dumb. People who just go out to get wasted make no sense to me... I've seen a little of what drugs can do to a body, because of all the posters around my high school, and I don't like the taste of any alcohol... 'Cept rum (rumballs). Still for stress relief, why don't these people go to your local midi site and get some music? That's proven scientifically to help calm people down.

Meh. Whatever people do to their bodies is their own perogative. Myself, it really is sorta beneficial because iit gelps me get ahead; in that I don't use drugs.

Danielle: Well, don't forget that some people enjoy the taste of wine or enjoy a cold beer after a hard day of working. If you're, you know, RESPONSIBLE (and I've seen many people who aren't, and I'm not talking about you guys ()), there's no problem. It's a treat rather than an obsession or a way to enter a new world.

It's probably different for everyone, but for me there's a few different reasons:

-It's something to do on a boring night. Lots of alcohol can create entertaining activities out of anything
-It melts away whatever inhibitions I have left and lets me do/say what I want. Despite trying to be sociable, I still cling onto a little piece of social fear, but alcohol does away with it.
-Other people seem more interesting. I am not nearly as elitist when drunk.
-I guess I become more charming, because girls like me better drunk
-Chasing vodka with beer lets me lord my extreme manliness over puny beta males
-Last, I just feel extremely happy when drunk.

This all increases over the night, until I reach my breaking point... Somewhere around 20 beers/shots, I guess. Then that all goes down the shitter and I start doing things I can't remember and throwing up and stuff.

Usually you don't aim for the blackout/throwing up part, but it just sorta happens. When you're sober doing 30 shots sounds like an awful idea, but once you get drunk it becomes a lot easier to just say "Fuck it, I'm awesome, I'll be fine"... And then get that thrown right back in your face.
