| Becuse honestly, while I might be a tech-guy, I'm honestly out of the loop when it comes to PC (X86) hardware. I just want to move away from my old HP computer, to something new, but I have no idea what parts. I want a above average but affordable computer. I probably want 2 GB of RAM... but would that be taking it too far? o.o Then... I really don't like the swapping in Windows XP. (it sucks, it's better than Win9x true, but is really behind all other OS's out there.)
And yes, I'm planning to use it for the newest games and such. I'm tired on using my laptop for such stuff, and it's not even made for gaming. -.- |

Seriously, the new Intel based Macs are quite nice. You can run OS X and Windows XP on them, thanks to Boot Camp, you can play Windows games on them (apparently VERY well from all reports I've heard) too. I hear the Vista Beta runs well on the Intel Mac as well if you want to run that. |

I think 1GB of RAM will be enough for now unless you're doing high-end things like video editing or running Vista.  |

Hyperhacker, the first thing that fell short on my HP computer with 512 mb, was programs taking up alot memory. :3 Then I guess I could just upgrade later when I need to. |

| I was told that 2 GB of RAM was too much unless I did video editing or similar activities. I got 2 GB anyway.
Do you have any idea what it is like to have dozens of applications running at the same time, and being to switch between them with absolutly no wating for them to be swapped in? I do. (Note: this is with Linux. YMMV) |

Also, HP computers (for that matter, most pre-built computers) tend to come with a lot of junk bogging them down. Build your own, install Windows XP, and let it find the drivers for your hardware; don't bother with the extremely bloated install packages that come with the devices except as a last resort, since they usually install a lot of crap (fancy graphical interfaces that just do the same thing Windows can already do on its own and other stuff). If Windows can't find a driver, put the install CD in but DON'T run the installer - hold Shift while you put the disc in to disable AutoRun. Then have it look on the disc itself. That works almost every time, if not, THEN use the installer and clean up after it. Even when it does get drivers off the Internet, you might end up with some junk, but usually you just close the processes and remove the startup entries in MSConfig or the registry editor. Or use Linux and not have to worry about bloated driver installers in most cases.
BTW, Chaos Force is right, building your own is a lot easier than you might think. Just wear rubber gloves if possible to avoid static damage, and read the manuals. Most things are designed so they can't fit in the wrong way or the wrong place. |

There's this anti-virus program... that my dad installed that I can't get ride of though (uinstaller is broken, jay). I would have to go into safe mode to even remove it.
