Ok, SMB3DES was just plain stupid. Even I got bored of doing it, thats how boring it was. But now, it is the lost levels that i am hacking, same storyline, same everything, different levels (and possibly GFX).

Progress:

June 25: Lost 1-1 (underground) done.
June 26: Repeatedly trying to get lost 1-2 (Sky) done, but it keeps deleting the goal card with the enemies. Any help on how to re-insert the goal card (with SMB3 Workshop or SMB3 Discombobulator)? Maybe I'll work on the Level card GFX instead.

Heres a suggestion when making new levels:

Clear out the ENTIRE area and start from scratch, or else your "new" area will look very similar to the original one.

No, as in I'm actually using the Nintendo SMB3 Lost Levels, not making new levels. also, i have 3 screens, all of the first level. (Notice how Mario is facing to the right and is in practically in the same place for every screenshot (with pipes around him yet not touching the pipes))

also, if these dont work, heres the website:
criptdood/>SMB3LLDES Screens
Thanks for your feedback!

Great, this seems like another bad hack, sorry. Removing Enemies a good hack does not make.

Thanks for your feedback then. Project closed, I guess.

*Goes off to continue his other SMB3 hack, which won't suck this time.*

While you should be doing hacks that YOU want to do and not that other people want to see, if you're planning on releasing them and expecting people to play and enjoy them, you need to put a little bit of work into making a fun experience. If you remove the enemies, you've just removed a huge chunk of what makes the game fun. Without any challenge, why are we even playing through the levels? There are no enemies to kill you and no enemies to kill, which results in little entertainment value. So what's the point?

If you want to make something other people will enjoy, follow through on what you said earlier that you would do: "different levels (and possibly GFX)". By removing just enemies, you're providing no new experiences; instead, you're removing quality from an experience that players have already had. If you create new, fun experiences in the form of, for example, new well-done levels, people will play it. We don't need more publically available hacks like these 'Deserted' ones you've been working on.

Also, I'm a little surprised at people's reactions to this hack. Where are the 'OMG its so original!!' comments I've come to expect from this message board? If someone can replace Samus or Mario with an OUTLINE of Samus or Mario and receive tons of amazing feedback telling him how great his hack is and how original it is, then someone removing all the enemies from a game should get the same treatment. Maybe this board's userbase is maturing?

Try to make a new SMB3 hack, learn ASM, innovate, show new things that are unknown for us.

It is kind of an interesting concept in a way, though. Well, it's certainly different, at least. Maybe there's a way to design the levels so that they could still be fun and/or challenging even without any enemies around?

The issue, though, is that he was taking the old levels and just removing enemies from them. That's not fun. Could you a fun sidescroller without enemies? Well, it's possible. Enemies surely help, though, and for SMB3, enemies definitely make the experience much better. New levels in SMB3 without enemies MIGHT be able to work, but why would you do it?

mbht91: You don't need to know ASM to make good hacks. Hacks like Zelda Challenge: Outlands can be made without assembly knowledge and still be very good. Hacking has been done for years without ASM knowledge and, while it helps, it isn't need.

Well, I am doing a good hack now. Basically, what I have done so far is completely blacked out the world 1 map and started from scratch, thus building a completely new map. Ill post screenshots in another thread, once I get the screenshots uploaded to something.

Edit: It actually wasnt just old levels, it was new levels hence the name "The Lost Levels". While it was still levels made by Nintendo, they had a completely new feel to them, such as the water-ice level.

They're not really new because just about everyone has played them due to other hacks making them available, nor are the levels recent. They're unused levels; 'new' is definitely misleading. Anyway, I hope your new hack turns out well.
