This morning at about 1:30 AM I was watching TV and the power went out. It wasnt raining so I looked out the window to see what was going on and I saw smoke rolling from the top of my apartment building.

I grabbed my wallet, keys, put on some clothes/shoes, and ran downstairs without even thinking about anything else. I go to the back of the building where the smoke is coming from to see a large ball of fire where the breaker box is and there are some people standing around watching it.
After it started to spread a few of us ran around knocking on everyones door to get everyone out of the building and then the first fire truck came. No one was hurt but we couldnt do anything but stand and watch as all of our stuff was totally destroyed by fire.

A huge croud gathered over a bit of time (Not sure how long it was) and I borrowed someones cell phone to call my parents and had them come up (They live about a mile away). Over the next 4 hours I just stood there with my parents watching my computer desk and walls burn through my window and answered random nosy peoples questions. I couldnt get my car out because of the fire trucks so I had to wait a couple more hours untill one of them moved.

The fire burned for about 13 hours (Didnt stay to watch it all) before they started to tear down the building and get the fire in the walls and such. We got to my parents house and I just stared at the cieling, not really feeling any emotion for some reason. All of my games, systems, my new computer, everything I own except what I left with is now gone. Here it is 10:30 PM and I still dont really feel any emotion.

I went to walmart and got some clothes, toothpaste, etc. and still havnt been to sleep. I dont really feel tired even though I havnt slept since about 7AM yesterday. I still feel like it didnt even happen or it didnt happen to me even though I know it did.

So here I am on my moms computer and I dont really even know why im typing this other than the fact that I am EXTREEMLY bored without any video games. Im guessing I should get a new DS Lite (Now I have a reason ) first as I still have my money (About $500) and I still have a job and everything.

I dont know if/when it will hit me that I have lost everything I own but right now im just kinda dazed. Ive been trying to keep upbeat about it (At least no one was hurt) and have been making jokes about me losing all of my stuff. I also asked some people if they had any marshmallows when we were watching it burn.
This is also probably the longest post I have ever made on any message board.

...Wow... I'm sorry Eponick.

That's got to be a difficult situation to deal with... we're never really presented with that sort of reality in our lives (at least most of us, thankfully)... losing everything so quickly and effortlessly. I don't really know what I would think either. How do you wrap your head around something that big?

But at least you're okay, it could have been much worse... I'm sure you can fathom situations without me giving some examples. Just keep in mind that life will be back to normal again with time, you just need to be patient.

Do you get any kind of... what's the word... compensation? Or do you just have to start from scratch again? =\

You seem awfully mellow after such a misfortune. I know I wouldn't have handled this as well as you did. I wish you luck in getting your life back on track.

That's awful. I can't imagine how I'd feel if my house burned down. It was my great-grandmother's.

Well, at least you kept your sense of humor. I wish you luck.

That's rough, but I've been there myself. It's not really going to hit until you go back(if you do) to get what's left of your stuff.

I had a tree destroy the trailer my family was living in early in April(right after my SAT and before my AP exams, go figure) this year. When we went back and realized out home was demolished, it was all I could do to stand up. I couldn't help but cry. Maybe it's because I'd never moved until that happened, but it was emotional.

I had the same dazed and not exhausted feeling you report. It's a scary thing, glad you're okay though. That's one of those things no one should have to experience. It's a good thing you have cash handy though. Did you have renter's insurance to cover all your stuff?

Sadly I didnt have renters insurance. Lesson learned I guess.
I also wont be able to go back to get my stuff because theres nothing there but a pile of black bricks. I talked to a firefighter that was there and he said the heat was so hot it warped his face plate thats supposed to be good for 2,000 degrees.

In total there were 13 apartments and 5 small buisnesses that were destroyed.
It was strange seeing people I know on the news this morning but I guess we just have to move on. Some things we cant replace (Photo's, gifts, etc.) but were lucky to be alive and able to remember them.

Wait, you dont need renters insurance. Same thing happend with a good friend of mines sister. Her appartment burnt down and she was still in school so her parents insurance covered it. I would check to make sure you dont get money or if you do.

*hopes your in school*

Always a good idea to have renter's insurance the case of rented housing though. We're in the process of getting that now.

That sucks that you didn't have any though, insurance is lovely to have in such situations, despite the annoyance of legal procedures and the company trying to give you as little money as possible.

Will it be easy to replace most of what was lost?

Nope, finished school last year.
And most of the stuff was just games and hardware that could be replaced (With alot of money and time) but I probably wont be buying back most of it as I had already beaten the crap out of most of my games. I will probably just buy Smash Bros. Melee/Zelda WW and wait for the Wii as far as console games go.

Thankfully my SNES/Games are here at my parents house. I would definatley cry or have run back in if I had those with me (FF2, FF3, Mario 7 Stars, Zelda, etc.).

For now im just spending my time playing/relearning guitar and playing Meteos on my new DS Lite.
Having a job is great. I would be totally screwed if I didnt.
Its also a good thing that I had about $500 saved up.

Shit. If my house burned down... That would be it. Everything that I have is prettymuch on computers I've built myself, and is irreplaceable. I wouldn't have a hope if that happened... Dude, you are one strong individual. At least you've got your SNES games and a DS lite to help you take your mind off of what just happened to you.

Well I spend (Used to I guess...) my free time programming so I try not to think about the data ive lost.
Most of it was just programs/games I made to learn something and I never released them so its not TOO big a deal.

I also lost my limited edition Link Cel Art I got when I preordered Soul Calibur 2 on the GC
And my $350 Darth Vader statue from Sideshow Collectibles that I won in a constest. Lots of old books too.

Starting to remember alot of the things I will never be able to get again.
Damn, this sucks

Went out looking for a new apartment before work today and I found one I might move into in early July. Its a small town and everyone knows what happened and some people are giving me stuff cheap or free
The landlord will try and get me some basic furniture for free. The pawn shop that owned my old apartment gave me a TV and PS2 at cost (VERY CHEAP!).
Guess I will be able to finish Tales of Legendia afterall.

Wow... That's awful, dude.

I think I'd burn with my house rather than leave my Transformers behind. Anything else I might be okay with, but I'm pretty attached to all my oldschool stuff.

Ever considered a safe deposit box? I mean, the people at the bank might give you funny stares but at least Optimus Prime would be safe and sound .
