I'm taking a summer chemistry course because I failed it a year ago. I know, I'm a fucking winner, right?

Anyways, the class that I failed was a true college course. Asshole professor who was only in it for the research money, long and complex equations with no partial credit given, early lecture class with 300 students in the same room, one row of Asian kids sitting up front who somehow know all the answers, me drawing pictures of tanks as answers on the exams... If you've been to college, you probably know the drill by now. You will always get fucked in the ass by a class or two like this. No matter how much you research the professors beforehand and make smart decisions, you simply cannot escape a virgin.

Moving on, I was bracing myself for this 8 week course from hell. It's 12 hours a week, spread over 4 days a week, for the rest of my summer. This is gonna be hell, right?

I get to the class, and what do we do? We go around the room introducing ourselves to the class. OK, that's not so bad; we can start the class off nicely, right? We can get to the material now.

Then she goes around the room and asks us each to name an object that we have at home. Then we go over wether each one is a gas, liquid, or solid. Read that again and think about how fucking stupid that is; THIS IS A COLLEGE COURSE! This isn't just "Intro to science" or some bullshit class like that, this is a 200 level course! Some smartass tried to sneak a plasma in there and then the entire class got confused because of it.

Last Thursday we spent an entire 75 minute class on two topics: "Accuracy vs Precision" and "Converting measurements." If you know the difference between accuracy and precision, you would know that you can explain all you need to know about them into three or four sentances. We, on the other hand, spent 30 minutes on it.

We move onto converting units, basic stuff like kilometers to centimeters... She goes around the class doing practice problems and everyone has to ask questions about every problem because they are all retarded. At the end of class, she has each person turn in a piece of paper with a comment or question about the class on it. I write mine and go up to turn it in. Before I put mine down, I look at the one already on top of the pile. It simply reads:

"I DON'T UNDERSTAND CONVERSIONS!!!!"

Our topic for this evening is:

When have you felt like too little was asked of you? Have you ever felt like the people around you are sucking the intelligence out of you like a black hole? Tell us your stories of lowered expectations.

Optionally, you may also comment on my story. Or call me a dumbass. Whatever you want, really.

I feel bad for you, wite. But I guess this is what you get for failing it the first time.

As for classes that have made me feel like my intelligence is getting sucked out of me... my english class last year was filled with idiots. Kids that don't know what a thesis is in their junior year of high school, kids that can't spell the word "intelligent" if they tried, kids that sound like 5 year olds when we read in class. It annoys me to no end. And if I get called on and actually read, explain something, or use too big of a word (ie profound), they interrupt to ask what profound means, or to tell me to slow down with the reading.
I just want to stab them.

My chemistry class had a similar effect, where students still didn't know significant figures in June, when we learned them the previous August.

But these are high school courses, not college, so I can't imagine how frustrated you are with it.

The original class sounds like Physics 202 - electricity and magnetism. It was a requirement for computer science - I saw it as a weedout class, though it probably was useful to people interested in hardware engineering electives - and it suuuucked. The concepts were difficult for me to grasp in the first place because they were intangible, and though the prof wasn't an asshole, he was a sucky lecturer. He'd put up giant monstrous equations, realize that he'd messed them up, try to scratch out and redo variables, and wind up making an even worse mess of it. I was grateful for my B-. At least the lab component was anywhere from OK to fun.

I had a class from hell this year. Theology. I love(d) all of my Mediaeval class, but this was a module in the thought category of my course. It eviscerated my grade. I managed to have the class dropped for extenuating circumstances, but yeah. F'd in the A.

I remember Grade 11 Summer English (what, Ziff fail!? ) Yeah. I failed Grade 11 English pretty bad. My final project was a piece of cardboard with a sock nailed to it with a piece of paper. It was about the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I did it two minutes before class finding shit in the lost and found bin (a sock and a nail and a piece of cardboard? fuck my school sucked). It was awesome trying to explain it to the teacher. anyways, it failed me in that class so I had to go to summer school. We spent three weeks on Of Mice and Men. For reading it. Every day. 8-3.

A book that is like 100 pages long.

3 weeks.

I just stopped caring and took to stealing textbooks for fun.

reminds me of when I was in summer school last year, I was taking chemistry, english, and a few other classes I don't even remember; it was piss-easy and full of stupid people [and me, the dropout who decided to get his diploma].

I don't have any cool stories like ziff

so...doesn't an easier class make things better? I mean, if you don't need chemistry for your major, then an easy class is a great GPA booster. I would be even more concerned if this class is needed for your major (as in, you are going to be a chemist or will be working with chemicals). Then you have a point of how backwards the class is.

It's quasi-necessary for my major. I'm a Psychology major, and you have to take a one of a few lab sciences as part of the major. I picked Chem because I remembered the most from it... Now I have to retake Chem because I need it both for my major and my GPA

It's not that I wish it was so hard that I'd fail it... It's just that sitting in that class can be mind numbing. It's better than the other class, but I still hate it.

What bewilders me is that I failed the original course and these people are still making me feel like a genius. How does that happen?

Whatever, Einstien failed his classes too.

Haha... Ziff, that story might almost be worth the failing grade.

Yeah, I had a habit of simply not doing my work in high school. Normally, I would fail a class and then they would put me in a higher level course anyway to try for the credit again, since I did ok on the tests. But then I failed Earth Science, then Biology, so they put me in the class with the slow kids. I didn't mind. Everybody thought I was some kind of genius because I knew which numbers on the periodic table were the atomic mass and which were the atomic number. Then I really amazed them by knowing what those numbers meant.

And I actually passed that class. How could I not? Half the work was crossword puzzles.

I could almost see that, someone might be concerned enough to check the lost in found after losing a water bottle, and isn't too concerned they might get the wrong one. (yuck).

But a nail? Someone must have been walking down the hall and saw a nail and thought, "Oh man, I better put this in the lost and found, someone must be wandering around here with just a hammer".

Well, maybe it was a big nail. Or maybe it was nearby the lost and found area and someone thought "WON'T THIS BE FUNNIEZ"

But water bottles? You'd have to be an idiot to pick up a water bottle from there.

You know those small tack nails? Yeah. It was one of those. More properly, it was a bundle of them taped together and I tore it open and took one and scatted the rest because I didn't care and the warning bell for class went off.

If you've read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy it'd have been clear that I was trying to make the Guide itself. Or not. Although when I looked at it during the presentation phase I told the teacher that it was an anti-whatever its name was device. A sock represents the towel.

On the topic of the title... In Grade 10, I had the final mark on my math exam curved to 76 from a 58. That's because the exam was evil (it was a government exam) and touched on things we didn't learn and also had a question where a cliff counted as a "natural fence".

Needless to say, the marks were changed ASAP. Curve was simple; square root the mark and multiply by 10.

wite: That absolutely sucks. On the bright side, if the class is going to be taught at this... erm... level, there's no excuse for not passing. Start doodling in class or something.

Alright, here I go.
My English class consists of a teacher who passes you for speaking English.
No, seriously. My friend next to me walked out with a D, 32.44%
The girl across from fell asleep during the final exam!
I've been asked how to spell "water" (one T or 'too')
Yes, I've read essays where people mistake to, too, and two.
All-in-all, sometimes schools overall can screw you over just by placement in a bad class.

Dude, if you have some funny thoughts about a class the days that you can drop out... DO IT! Sometimes you have to take a fall to avoid getting killed on your GPA. I myself have never dropped a class but if I really feel the need to do it, I will.

I was tempted last year when my asshole English professor told me to give up. Just to piss him off out of spite, I stayed even longer and greet him with a cheerful (but tacky) "Good Morning Mr. Klug!" with an "I hope you die in your sleep!" in my thoughts.

The advisors here frown upon that kind of crap. I think they get paid to convince people to get out in 4 years, regardless of GPA. I could write a whole essay on how much college advising sucks... but we'll leave that for another day.

To the high school graduating class: Cruel Justice just gave you some very good advice, something I found out the hard way. You would do well to listen to him.

I can have a reasonable shot at a 3.0+ by graduation, so I'm not too pissed. (Reasonable shot as in, I don't have to pull a 3.9 over the rest of my classes or something like that)

My Psychology 103 course was called "Common Sense 101" by most of the denizens of URI. The teacher insisted upon a black and white scheme of thought in a psychology class, of all things. Her word was always right, even when there were obvious logical fallacies to her work, and even when the textbook itself contradicted her. Her opinion was always correct, as well. Crazy, no? Can't believe the ideology I held was incorrect, all this time.

Then there were my programming courses... I know you're supposed to build from the ground up, but we kept on having to cover the same thing over and over and over again because some people just couldn't get it. It frustrated me, mostly because in an educational scenario, it's very hard for me to take the perspective of someone who can't understand the material when I can, or someone who can understand the material when I can't.

Honestly, I'm glad I'm transferring.

My dad had to teach a Grade 8 history class this year for "special" kids; not special as in mentally challenged but as in having behavior problems/etc. Nothing bad ever happened in class but these are kids who like to skip a lot and such.

3 kids who were model students got placed in the class. They got the three highest marks and half the class failed. Granted, he taught the same material as everyone else, but stupidity doesn't rub off on you.

I think I could count the number of people in my high school who actually deserved to pass grade 3 on my hands. These people, even in grade 12, can't spell worth shit, don't know basic math or grammar, etc. A lot of my assignments in English were fucking word searches. The only people who ever failed were the ones who didn't show up. It's really sad.
