Thanks US, the Swedish people are really getting a positive image of you.

I hope the Bodström get's fired over this, and have to pay huge fines. There were Swedish laws broken in the intrest of USA. We actually care about something that is called privacy in Sweden.

I'm definatly voting for this party. Nothing will change my mind.

Thank god it's election year this year.

Just another attempt at the US Government to control the rest of the world and it's own people. I wonder if they are ever going to give up trying to stop pirates, they are never going to win unless they implant us all with microchips and take control of are brains, or they find a way to monitor incredible amounts of people at one time.

The US is practically turning into a Nazi Nation... they are so restrictive of everything now, coming up with the dumbest laws. Without question, this is one of their idiotic rants. Pirating will happen no matter what and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

I see a lot of people insulting the American Government. I don't see anyone really suggesting any actions.

Can ANYONE tell me what the American Government should do to protect fair business then? Just letting piracy run rampant is not an option. Sadly, even though the RIAA is full of shit, they do have the right to inflate prices. Music is not some sort of inalienable right; If you don't like the prices, you don't have to buy it, but you have no right to download it for free without permission, especially when you are still ripping the artist out of his $2 or whatever.

Not to mention that music labels aren't the only people who get hurt by piracy. Film studios, programmers, and video game business are hurt by piracy too.

I understand piracy will never completely go away. Saying we shouldn't fight piracy because it will never completely go away is like saying we shouldn't fight terrorism because it will never completely go away. You will never win against it, but you can definately lose to it.

I understand America has done some fucked up things in the past. This is not about the past; two wrongs do not make a right.

Again; Does anyone have a REAL, PRACTICAL solution that would put pressure on TPB to shut down other than this kind of act? I understand that this is not a great solution, but it is the least bad solution. If somebody does have a better way, then I will eat my words in front of you all. If nobody has a better way, then why all the ad hominems?

PS: Cruel Justice, until the American Government sanctions the organized murder of tens of millions of civilians, please do not compare them to the Nazis. A trade sanction is nowhere near as bad as a murder, not to mention millions of murders. It just discredits your argument.

(edit2: clarified a sentance, and added the bit about other oranizations)

Well, if the servers aren't located in Sweden anymore, then it becomes a moot point because now you have to track down several different servers around the world.

I don't think the American government can threaten sanctions regarding a worldwide site, especially if the actions on a site aren't illegal in the country the server resides in. They could always make the site block access to American IP's but that would be circumvented easily.

Why should the US government get involved with TPB anyway? The music companies will just have to learn that a CD is not worth $20+. They do not deserve million dollar bank accounts for little actual work while people do actual back-breaking labor for peanuts. I would download any album on a major label and not feel the slightest bit of guilt. (on the other hand i buy every single album i want to listen to from independant labels). The "solution" to this problem is not causing international incidents, it is selling media at a reasonable price.

I agree that there is a greater problem involving the RIAA's role in music and how music is distributed to the public. There are a lot of middle men in that process (including the RIAA) that are becoming or already are obsolete, and are trying to make excuses and use the law to hold onto the reins of the music industry, so they can keep lining their pockets. I agree that the long term solution has to be to cut out those middle men. Piracy, however, is still not right, nor it is the way to solve the problem. You are still violating the music industry's right to charge what they want for a CD, and furthermore you are wronging the artists who are trying to make a living doing what they love instead of having to work two shifts at McDonald's just to afford instruments. The music industry is fucked up, but that doesn't make stealing from it any more right.

Major label contracts vary, but in most cases you are not harming the artist. Major labels typically pay money up front then not ever again to the artist (unless artist in question is already established and has serious leverage at the deal negotiating table). Also, most artists who are not already millionaires make most of their money by touring. If you have downloaded something, loved it, then went and saw them live, you have helped that artist much more than buying their album would have. How many times have you seen an interview with an artist and they say they dont care if you download their music? I've seen that many times. I've read an awful lot of horror stories involving artists being royally screwed by unfair contracts the big companies trick them or coerce them into. Maybe its time to do something about it and get rid of the whole major label system. Its corrupt, not working, and pathetic. With the internet, maybe we'll move on to a more direct artist to fan relationship where prices are much lower for us, yet the artist gets more money to because it goes directly to them. Everyone wins then except the big companies. We dont really need them anyway.

He makes a valid point. The whole way the record-label system works was fucked over from the start -- I can't remember the whole story now, but the gist of it is that someone who was only supposed to proofread a law/whatever actually snuck a whole new portion into it and it got passed, etc.

Though I, too, have read horror stories from musicians who have gotten ripped off from major record labels.

And, on a final note, I have my own reasons for boycotting music CDs. Remember the Sony rootkit incident? I think I'll pass on everything from Sony, and with how expensive music CDs are now anyway ($18? You can buy hundreds* of songs off of iTunes for that) it's just getting rediculous.

Besides, if I really liked something, I'd go out and get a copy of it anyway.

If the big movie/music companies didn't make their products so shitty (rootkits, DRM, etc etc etc) maybe more people would be into them. Right now (and very ironically), piracy is probably the safest route.

I can understand not wanting to buy CDs with their fantastic overpricedness, but there's other alternatives. You even mentioned iTunes. That's better than piracy. And really, the way everyone is going about this... Well, I've made my comments on that already, no? Heh.

Dude, 99% of this board is us assuming we know what we're talking about. Fuck, 99% of the internet is people who think they're experts on everything. It took this thread to make you realize that?

I am only arguing this because it's a topic I have gone over before, and one that interests me as a musician.

But thank you for getting the thread moved.

First, I thought most major labels paid a lot up front and then small royalties afterwards, versus indie labels who are mostly about royalties on album sales and concert sales. I admittedly have no source for this. It's just the way I was taught.

And I know how the indie label thing works. But you're still ripping them off of however much money you owe them. No matter what label, it's going to add up to a lot due to the sheer number of people pirating. You owe them their $2 either way. For some reason people tend to feel it's right because they're only jipping the band out of a couple bucks; the reality is, it's a few million people jipping artists out of a few million bucks.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to buy albums at shows. They usually cost less there, and the band usually gets a bigger chunk of your cash.

EDIT: About the I-Tunes thing... that's sorta what I was trying to say will happen. Hopefully, artists 10 years from now will just go to a studio, record, and then put the album on ITunes or available for delivery over the internet. Labels will still exist, but won't be as necessary, because you can advertise effectively over the internet for very little money while previously you would need record label type money to take out radio or TV ads. Cut out the middle man, let the bands supply their product directly to the consumer. It'll lower the selling price of albums and let the artists make a bigger profit on them. A few bands are already doing something like this... I think HORSE the Band does something like this.

It was a joke. Perhaps I should have said Coprolalia, but who the hell knows what that is by name? The only reason most people think Tourette's syndrome automatically means you swear uncontrollably is the film What About Bob? starring Bill Murray. I watched this movie as a kid. Then in college I tutored a kid who had Tourette's. No swearing.

As for your comments on this thread or your political views, you haven't stated anything at all. All you said was that nobody knows what they're talking about. So are you the only one among us who knows what he's talking about or are you just ranting?
