Kirby held up a thumbs up.

Kirby: No harm here. The way we took it on, it didn't stand a chance... much less barely stand.

He put his desert eagle away, and fixed his hat. He looked over at where the mech once stood.

Kirby: Don't think I've ever seen a robot use that means of escape before... Shoo.. Maybe it's got some Magitek init or somethin'. I'm sure technology like that would bring in a nice bit of money, even just a piece of it.... Hey, Miss Cat Lady: If we manage to take that thing down on a future time, do we get some moolah from it, or get rewarded with a sense of security that we don't have to worry about a random attack of that caliber?

Salaheem : If you harass the Empire enough 'bout it, you can profit off any act of self-defense... but if you think you're not going to see another ambush like that here, you're sorely mistaken... I told you, no one's going to know to leave this city well alone as long as the Candescence stands. But that's none of my business...

Moments later, a walkie-talkie-looking device hanging on her hip went off. She scooped it up as fast as she could.

Salaheem : ...oh, really. I'm surprised you learned this quick, but why didn't you... yeah, yeah, public safety, sense of urgency, whatever. I'm whoop-dee-do-thrilled that you're giving us first dibs, bu... just messengers? Now that you think of it... I have a few people that might be interested. I'll get back to you in a few minutes. *flicks it off* OKAY! I know you'd all love to discuss this all day, but we need to get back inside. You're getting your first pay duty.

"Right."

Tearing his eyes off the robot (he'd been looking for any useable parts), Snipes turned and walked up and into Salaheem's office, and sat down on one of the chairs that wasn't overturned from the shockwave from the robot falling.

Kirby: Hey, atleast it'd take away one source of ambush.

Kirby, who was already inside, walked towards table that had the hulking bazooka-oven object. He banged a fist on the matter transmitter before taking his eyes off of it.

Kirby: Eh, this thing won't do. If anything, it's got a good possibility of being tapped into during the transmission.. Of course, it'd do anyone else no good.

He lets out an irritated sigh as he leaned on the table.

Kirby: Alright, what's this new job about?

Salaheem : I happened to get off the phone with the consignment office... after this attack, the Empire wanted to regain contact with the Immortals and try to bring them back into the city.

Salaheem looked over to a map on the wall.

Salaheem : They're the Empire's super-soldiers. Normally they maintain camps near the enemy borders and keep tight surveillance on them. We normally don't try to keep them near the city due to their... destructive tendencies. But, they want otherwise now, and I'm not the one that makes decisions. I need you to deliver this package to them.

Salaheem slid out a large parcel onto the table.

Salaheem : ...this contains their instructions. You'll need to deliver this to one of their outposts. There are 5 in all, but for safety's sake I suggest you deliver it to one of the two closest to the city. They'll be able to contact each other once the package hits home. Now... you can choose to go here... or here. Mount Zvahlom, a volcanic region up north. There's one Immortal stationed up there watching the Troll caverns. You'll need to pass through the Bhalfau Thickets to get there. The other is in the Wajaom Woodlands, southeast of here - Mamool Ja territory. I wish I could tell you more about either, but THEY keep me on a bit of a leash, so newbies don't get much of a chance to learn. I'll be waiting here for your decision.

Kirby: You mean newbies learn first hand.

Kirby walks up to the parcel, and picks it up. He shakes it a bit, knowing full well was just a parcel.

Kirby: So.. We gotta do this as a team? Like, decide where to go together, or what? Or could we just go and find whatever random job there is to do out there instead?

Snipes shook his head.

"A team, silly. You go out there alone, and you never know what might happen. Besides, at least it gives us a reason to stick together for now. So... this 'Wajom' place sounds easiest to get to, does anyone think we should go to the volcano instead?"

Quint: Sneaking is one thing. Sneaking past lizard-men who presumably have artificially enhanced senses of perception and who are themselves skilled at sneaking, while on their home turf, is entirely another.... I'm not saying it's impossible, in fact I could do it quite easily using Phantom Mode... if I knew where I was going, I'm just saying the other route sounds easier.

Salaheem : ...I'm waiting...

Ultimanium : I said I was willing to go with whichever.

Salaheem : If you did I didn't hear you. So that's... two that want to hit up Zvahlom, and two that don't care where their grave is.

Ultimanium rolled his eyes as Salaheem tore a map of Aht Uhrgan off the wall, slamming it down on the table. She quickly started tracing it with her finger, sticking thumbtacks into it as she progressed.

Salaheem : Head out the northern gate from the Commoner's Ward. That'll take you to the thickets, head straight west from there. Eventually you'll come up to a guard tower. Some ways north from there you'll find an entrance to the caverns below. Those'll eventually turn and lead you west, from there you need to follow those upwards until they take you up to the plateaus of Mt. Zyhalom. Once you're outside follow the rim of the volcano clockwise, eventually you'll arrive at the outpost, you can't miss it. The terrain's easy enough to navigate, but I'd want to avoid the wildlife if I were you.

Salaheem fumbled to fold up the map, shoving it in the direction of her employees.

Salaheem : If you don't turn the wrong way, you shouldn't stroll into any trolls... if you do, I wouldn't suggest fighting them on their home turf for obvious reasons. You had enough fun with their last creation, and, well, they've got a lot more where that came from...

Kirby casually grabbed the map and started walking down the stairs.

Kirby: Man, your suggestions are no fun. I'm sure we'll all be careful, and such. C'mon, Rexy.

The one wheeled motor cycle gave a few revs before heading out to follow Kirby.

Kirby: Are you guys ready, or you need to wait?

Ultimanium bounced out of the front door of the building on his behind, completely falling down the stairs. Grumbling he pushed himself back to his feet. Salaheem stomped out after him, waving her mace.

Salaheem : *vein bulge* GO

Ultimanium : Yes ma'am.

********

With the evacuation sirens no longer blaring migraines into everyone's heads, the Balrahn way had suddenly regained all its life. Dozens of booths and small cart-bound shops selling produce, fresh meats and cheap Aht Uhrgan trinkets quickly flooded back into the area, as did their dirtily-dressed customers.

Ultimanium : As terribly easy as this sounds, am I the only one that thinks it's bogus that these 'super soldiers' have zero contact with the Empire, at all? Then again, I also think it's bogus that the standing army consists of us and several very angry farmers. Oh well... money's money I guess...

********

On the other side of town, smoking incense poured out of its wall-based receptacles in a dimly-lit tea house. The lords of various estates discussed land deals, several morbidly obese rich men sat amongst their dozens of female escorts, and a large humanoid alligator sat at a table with a similarly-humanoid bird. The former wore headphones blaring music that drowned out the more traditional live flute-playing on the other side of the room.

Vector : Oh yeah. This is the good stuff. Waiter, I'll take another of these... chai things?

Manager : That's your 18th.

Vector : That's this crap right?

Manager : ...yes...

Vector : Done deal! Fetch me some of it, chop chop!

Manager : *snarl*

The avian figure squinted its red eyes. It was covered entirely in rapidly fading feathers, which were turning a steady shade of silver.

Geesho : If you do not mind, I would like to speak soon and be done with it.

Vector : Oh. Yeah. Sure, spit it out. Just tell me what you know about this Astral Candysense thingy and I'll jot it down.

Geesho : If I may ask, are you being paid for your services in Aht Uhrgan?

Vector : Not nearly enough.

Geesho : To tell the truth, I... *looks away* ...do not know a terrible amount about the Astral Candescence myself. I do happen to have connections however. The military defends the country and thus the Candescence, but the Empire has a clergy, under the guise of an organized religion, that caretakes the artifact. Again, I do not know to what degree they actually are in charge of this, but they may provide an interesting lead.

Vector : So where to?

Geesho : Contact the church of Walahar. Investigate them as you please, but do not directly bring up the Astral Candescence. They have... grisly means of dealing with spies.

A cold silence filled the room.

Vector : Not enough of these friggin' mercenaries runnin' around like rugrats understand that... but I will. For your sake.

Geesho : Thank you.

Kirby: I wouldn't mind more money now. With the currency of this area that I've.. borrowed, I'm sure it's not enough to buy me somathat food.

Kirby looked at the map and started walking.

Kirby: If it'll make you feel any better, I completely forgot any possible talk relating to an "Empire" or "Super Soldiers". As long as I know what's the goal, and we're gettin' a reward, that's all that matters. Ain't that right, Rexy?

The one wheeled motorcycle let out two revs in agreement.

"I've been ready for a while."

Getting up, Snipes walked over to the doorframe of Salaheem's office and stepped outside. walking forward, Snipes (to someone out of the know) appeared to simply start floating off of the ground. Of course, to those who DID know, it was just the repulsors in Snipe's feet activating. Gaining momentum, Snipes was soon down the stairs and hovering a good foot off of the ground.

The thickets had a steady canopy of pink-leaved trees, the same variety which littered the ground and made up the forest floor. The path leading through quickly turned into a maze - the road itself was carved downwards, taking the form of a trench that wound through the countryside and split off at random intervals. Ultimanium glanced over his shoulder as a grinding crash rang out from far behind them. The town gates hit the ground and its laborers fled the town walls for obvious reasons.

Ultimanium : Everything growing here is so odd... I have yet to actually see grass or sand, this soil's turning red, and these look like sakuras but the leaves are too big...

The leaves above rustled as a creature flew out with the head of a parrot and the body of a hummingbird. It hissed before flying away.

Ultimanium : ...among... other things...

********

At one point the ground began declining sharply, leading into a visibly man-made tunnel far wider than tall. Ultimanium stuck his head in, where the temperature jumped at least 10 degrees. Stepping out, he noticed a fist-sized spider on his shoe. Grumbling he shook it off.

Ultimanium : This looks like the right direction. Let's hurry.

A big red light on top of the insect started blinking as it scurried off...
