Kirbynite: And there we go!

Kirby slammed a panel shut on Quint. He hopped away and dusted his hands.

Kirbynite: I tell you what, that was something else. I don't know if it was because I was more used to repairing Alien-Cyborg technology, or what... Ah, it doesn't matter now. That should get you goin'.

Kirby nodded as he returned to his normal form after spitting out a star. He placed the star inside a jar, and back into his backpack.

Kirbynite: C'mon, Rexy. Let's get moving.

Kirby's motorcycle gave a rev or two before slowly following Kirbynite up the stairs.

Quint, standing up on his own managed to get his second view of this reality that wasn't the ground... Kirbynite. He was a bit startled, but he had already determined that Kirbynite was quite friendly. Still, as he headed up the stairs, he couldn't help but ask...

Quint: So... If you don't mind me asking... What exactly are you?

Kirbynite: Huh? Me? Oh, I'm a Roly Poly Dreamlander. From the planet Popstar. Oh! Pardon my rudeness! I forgot the proper introduction! I'm Kirbynite. And this guy is Rexy, my Rex Wheelie. He's from Popstar, as well. Not much I can say without irritating the MiB. Of course, they're not exactly doing a good job in keeping an eye on me here..

Quint: Hmm... Well, you're the first alien I've ever met. We haven't even come into contact with any in my timeline as far as I know. Gah, I need to get back to my timeline! I still have to try to track down Rock!

...

Quint: My time circuits still aren't responding!... Bah, and even if they were, I don't see how I'd be able to find my way back from here... It's like I'm stuck in some sort of combination Quantum Leap/Sliders rip-off

While sitting down waiting for something to happen, Snipes thought he heard voices below him. Listening, Snipes could discern trwo voices talking... and a... motorbike?! This had to be a joke. getting up, Snipes walked over to the door, and walked out and down the stairs, the voices growing rapidly more distinct.

Ultimanium : Someone's coming... *folds his arms and stares off into space* Drat! I hear those killer robots are fighting it out in the bastion again... I sure wish I had the strength left in my bones to go out and kick an ass or two!...

Ultimanium paused, glancing back to Quint and Kirbynite as they continued talking.

Ultimanium : How in the HELL do I try to not look suspicious those two standing next to me... I'm going to hope that's not a guard coming...

He cleared his throat, nodding to Snipes as he approached.

Ultimanium : 'sup.

Kirbynite: Um.. Well, I've got plenty of mad scientist friends that can help you with your time problem. But.. we're in the middle of something right now, sooo.. you might have to wait a little longer, heh. I'm way too curious to break away from finding out what's going on here .

Kirbynite noticed Ultimanium greeting someone else. Kirby turned to look up the stairway and gave out another smile, and waved..

Kirbynite: Oh, hiya, up there.

Nearly falling over when he saw the group below him, Snipes regained his balance, then replied to the group he was facing.

"Sorry, you startled me. You're the thrid, fourth, and fifth people I've met so far... I'm Snipes. I was touring the back country a while, and when I came here to find out where I was, I almost got picked off by a random bullet! Anyways, I'm still wondering; Where am I?"

As Snjipes continued to survey the group of 'friendlies' he'd met, his eyes fell upon Quint.

"Hey, no shit... You're a reploid, aren't you?!"

Quint: Yes, though I used to be a robot.

Quint turns to Kirbynite.

Quint: While I appreciate the thought, even if they had some incredibly advanced sensors that would be able to track my path as I entered this continuity, I still wouldn't be able to find my way back to my home reality from there. I was taught by my universe's greatest expert on temporal physics...

----------

Meanwhile...

JDavis: *achoo!*

----------

Back where we were...

Quint: ... so I know what I'm talking about when I say I'm basically out of luck on ever getting home.

Kirbynite: Hey! Jus.... Oh..

Kirbynite looked down. The cheerfulness on his face was swept away.

Kirbynite: I... I.. guess you have a point...

A moment later, he looked up at Quint.

Kirbynite: But.. It won't hurt if you don't try! Don't say you're out of luck. I don't know anything about physics aside from the generic you get hurt if you get hit, but I know I've always managed to come back to where I belong. If you have home in your heart, even if you are a reploid, you'll find your home eventually!

Ultimanium : You say you have no way of determining where you came from... though if you're from where I THINK you are, I might be able to make an approximation... though I'd have to contact Magnopolis and they'd have to do some scanning work on this area, an-

??? : That'd be entirely illegal. Great huh?

Ultimanium sighed, turning at the familiar voice. At the top of the stairs stood a tall catwoman, dressed from head to toe in bright red traditional Arabic clothing. She had a head of moppy red hair that nearly covered her eyes, though not her arrogant smirk. She cradled what looked like a massive spiked mace on her shoulders with both arms.

Salaheem : You know how the Empire just loooooooves outside intervention, especially from Magnopolis of all places. If Al Zahbi was declared a no-fly zone a week ago, what makes you think they'd let a science team in?

Ultimanium : I don't think the Empire has any brains left over from the last sie-

Salaheem : They might not, Janitor, but so far you're not competing.

Ultimanium glanced down at his usual blue shirt and jeans.

Ultimanium : I'm not a friggin' jan-

Salaheem : And the rest of you, you've all got some real guts to stumble on into the Whitegate without any clue of what's happening, no matter exactly HOW you got here. This is the next best thing to a warzone as you can probably tell, so I'd better set you straight about what's happening before trolls come and step on your wee little heads. Come inside, we need to talk.

Salaheem spun around on her heels, slomping back into the office.

Kirbynite hopped in place.

Kirbynite: Yay! I'm gonna find out what's going on here-nya!

The motorcycle near Kirbynite revved twice before continuing up the stairs. Kirbynite proceeded to pleasantly skip up the stairs. Apparantly, "warzone" didn't register in his head.

Quint: The problem is that coordinates in space-time are entirely relative and always shifting, due to the infinitely branching nature of timelines, so when traveling through alternate timelines the only way to get back to where you began is with an exact plotting of the trip. The memory required to store a six-dimensional plot is enormous, and as such my time circuits are only able to store one trip at a time. When Wily Clone stabbed me in the back, it interrupted the flow of data from the memory to the time circuits themselves, which is what caused me to end up here instead of back home. If there is any intelligible data left, it's either a plotting of the trip from the timeline I was just in to here, or the plotting from my home timeline to the reality I was just in. Neither of which would be of any real help.

Kirbynite stopped walking and turned at Quint.

Kirbynite: .... Wow.. you sound like you're from one of those worlds that're like... based on reploid only worlds. I dunno if I'd be able to tolerate being in a stuffy world like that... You need a little more life in ya! Some magic in ya!

Kirbynite frowned before walking again.

Kirbynite: ...You also need to work on saying fewer words on a small flight of stairs.

Up in the office Salaheem had already plopped down into her chair behind the curtain, slamming her legs up on top of the desk.

Salaheem : Well... siddown.

Ultimanium saw four chairs lined up in front of the desk.

Ultimanium : How did yo-

Salaheem : I don't have all day.

Ultimanium : *sigh*

As Ultimanium plunked into his chair, Salaheem sprung out again from hers.

Salaheem : I've already told YOU this so I can spare some details... your buddies on the other hand...

Ultimanium : Tell everything.

Salaheem : I'm getting there, I'm getting there... anyways, you wanted to hear this, so here it is - I'll tell you the story of Aht Uhrgan.

------------
CHAPTER 1:
SACRED SERPENTS

------------

So... um... anyways... as you've probably heard a lot by now, you're currently in the town of Whitegate in Aht Uhrgan. Aht Uhrgan itself is at an undisclosed location in the Middle East... that's a silly description, saying that Aht Uhrgan is 'somewhere'... but for the most part, they don't WANT people to know it's here, for reasons explained later...

A long long time ago, Aht Uhrgan was a powerful middle-eastern nation with a burgeoning industry in textiles and coffees. Along the way, it grew a branch of alchemy guilds that are now littered all over the world. It was under a constant state of martial law in the time that it was ruled by the Empress Nasha, who eventually got assassinated and replaced with the current Empress Serpentine. Its military forces in this era were second to none, and actually outpaced Magnopolis's in terms of sheer manpower.

Eventually though, Aht Uhrgan found its Achilles' heel when a strange treasure was brought to the city of Whitegate and placed in its vaults. This would be known as the Astral Candescence.

Most people know what it looks like as it's been exposed multiple times during invasions. It's kept in the bowels of the Al Zahbi bastion, and the binding hall where it is kept has been breached before. It's some kind of energy orb held within a great pillar of cermet deep underground. What it actually does, now there's the burning question.

It's believed by scholars that the Candescence emits some kind of wave known as the 'Astral Wind', which is capable of stirring one's soul enough to literally multiply their physical and mental power in its presence. The effect is so powerful, that it is physically addicting within minutes of being around it. Wars have broken out over the possession of the Candescence, and wars still rage on. People to this day still attack the Whitegate in hopes of securing the artifact for themselves. Normally you figure anyone with a brain would leave the city and escape the fighting - but, the Candescence has the citizens of the city trapped in its influence as well. That's how fights get so rapid and so fierce - even with dozens of seperate forces bearing down on the city, no one WANTS to surrender!

While everyone wants a piece of Whitegate, there are obvious dominant factions, which also happen to be the ones situated closest to the city:

The Mamool Ja, lizardmen who have a bit of magic under their control. They are fond of physically augmenting their bodies with strange machinery, and also fond of taming the beasts of Aht Uhrgan and using them in their conquests. They have a knack for guerilla warfare, and are extremely dangerous in their natural habitat.

The Trolls, behemoths who live far under the woodlands around the city. They have mastered siege weaponry, and tinker with robots to create true war machines. The first wave of today's siege did happen to be from them.

The Undead Swarm, lamia and other spirit controllers. They make their base on a reef far north of here, and have a healthy supply of ships destroyed in naval battle to call upon. They have bound the willing (and unwilling) into new bodies to do their fighting for them.

The Seagull Cartel, rogue princes from the Empire that have now taken arms against it over land disputes. If the Swarm is the master of broken ships, the Cartel is the master of the ones still afloat. They are pirates, there is nothing more that needs to be said.

Now these are incredible odds you're fighting against... how do you survive? Well, technically, you don't - the magnificent army that once was the pride of Aht Uhrgan is now completely destroyed, which paves the way for people like me - the Empress has made a mass demand for mercenaries to set up shop in Whitegate and do her dirty work. She is paying an arm and a leg for private companies like my own to handle defenses and preemptive strikes on the factions that oppose the Empire.

The government infrastructure and economy will soon collapse under this incredible strain on its resources. But... people will ignore it to their death if it means the protection of the holy artifact. I moved in here to make a quick buck. Many other companies are doing the same.

Salaheem raised her mace, slamming it down sideways against her desk. She planted her hands firmly on it.

Salaheem : This is my company, Salaheem's Sentinels. You get your hands dirty, you bust some heads, we make the money, and in no time at all we blow this popsicle stand before the whole thing crashes down on top of us. You get it? Ulty and Biggs here happen to be the first of many employees of the Sentinels and we're always looking for more. If you folks wanna milk this place for all it's worth, or simply leave for that matter, it's not gonna come cheap.

Having heard the entirety of Salaheem's story, Snipes leaned back in his chair - he'd only just gotten into it as Salaheem started her story - and sighed.

"Well, If what you're telling us it true, then I guess that if I want to get out of here, I need to help you, right? I already know that nothing comes easy, so... Wall, at least I know where I am now. By the way, what happened to that other guy? I haven't seen him at all since he went downstairs..."

It was a that moment that the whole room shook, accompanied by a dull thud.

"Well, sounds like someone has paid us a visit. Perhaps we oughta get to know each other after we find out what that noise was?"

Salaheem clapped excitedly.

Salaheem : That'd be swell. To those of you interested, if you could just sign some paperwork, I'll get some badges ready and you can get on your way to the big time...

She spun around, dragging a door on the filing cabinet behind her out six feet, and sprayed a bundle of sheets all over the desk. Ultimanium scooped up one of the loose papers.

Ultimanium : "In the event of the employee's untimely demise in the service of the Empire of Aht Uhrgan, the employee accepts that it is the responsibility of Salaheem's Sentinels and Co. to notify officials in the middle lan..." Hey, I never got one of th-

Salaheem : Shush.

Salaheem's head jerked in the direction of the crashing and rumbling outside.

Salaheem : Biggs isn't here, is he... did he fall down the stairs AGAIN... someone be a darling and peek outside.
