11. The word soccer does not come from the United States but was a term used by public school and university students, most notably at Oxford, in the 19th Century to shorten the new game “Association Football”. The predilection to shorten words with “er” extended to Rugby too, known as rugger. -- Quoted from some UK site

Ah, I knew it was something like that. I think I´ve read about it sometime. Quite interesting to investigate where certain sports come from.

Here´s another. Just go down to the "History" part.

Oh I know why.. erm... soccer would make sense to be called football... but why would american football be called football? The only time you kick is when you're going for a field goal, or on 4th down occasionally.

They really should call soccer football in America. I mean, football and handball, it makes so much more sense that way.

Edit: Okay, you don’t have to yell.

It's also hard to rename a sport to share its name with another sport.

We're not alone; "soccer" is used in Australia as well, since football to them is Aussie Rules.

How about we change links at the top to read...

List of topical posting forums | The official online web-site for Acmlm's Board | List of all the online aliases of Acmlm's board's members | List of users who have made a great number of posts within a certain timespan that you may set yourself | Chart of all days and events | Internet Relay Chat Chat | Users currently browsing Acmlm's board

Titles attributed to the number of posts a member has made | Questions and Answers | The leaders in the traditional contest of posting as much as possible during a single day | Stats for Acmlm's board | Click here to open a box that allows quick and easy visual access to the most common special colors used in web pages | Use the internet search engine "Google" to find specific information on Acmlm's board | Photographs of various different members of Acmlm's board

Just so nobody gets confused and argues over the proper meaning of some of the things on there.

Spoiler:
In other words, this is a silly thing to argue about, and we should just drop it before it gets out of hand.

Whoa.

How long has Search worked like that? I remember it sucking more than this. Also, how long has it been available to non-staff?

Eugh, the custom appearance of the results is hideous. I'll just use regular google and add in site:board.acmlm.org.

The disadvantage to the google thing is that stuff doesn't show up there for until it's been there a while, like a couple weeks or months. It's better than no search at all, though.

...

Say, why don't we take a look at some other boards, like phpbb and stuff, to see how they handle search without killing the server?

Agreed, but come on. You were on staff once. You know how search used to be.

Given that the site uses Google AdSense, using Google itself for the search results isn't such a bad idea. They encourage it.

That was in a simpler time, when Search was on for everybody - and as far as I can recall, it worked fine - until it was revealed that it was putting tremendous strain on the server and Acmlm was forced to shut it off entirely.

Of course, Acmlm completely ruined the MySQL server on overclocked for a few hours by setting a post value to (literally) NAN, screwing over all of ZTNet (and making us in IRC crack up)...

Making a working search feature that worked here wouldn't be too hard, I guess, especially since the board isn't that old yet (only two months). There used to be much more activity than this in the earlier days (2001), anyway, so it'll take longer too.

The only real problem would be making thread.php show results right

Eh, just don't route it through thread.php; that already has enough problems with just "posts by user." Make a separate results.php that looks like thread.php but only deals with search results. It'll be easier.

That is my advice

NAN stands for "Not a number". And apparently, setting a post value to that screwed the whole database over and since the whole ZTnet includes the same server...

Might also say that the other overclocked sites and sites like Zophar.net belongs to ZTnet too.

Way to say only the most obvious, and not actually elaborate on it like I asked

Aaaanyway.

I just finished the last of my college applications, and sent it in. Woo.

I meant what I said, he also made it (I think) varchar instead of int and made someone's field "NAN", which made the users table lock up (and then, the whole MySQL server), breaking half of ZTNet (where overclocked.org is hosted)...

Sounds like fun.
