My school is trying to promote rugby by making it a sport there. It's not that popular, but at least all the idiots who never heard of it have a clue. At least my school is TRYING, right?

Soccer... meh. It's just not interesting enough.

Hockey, however... seeing those games live is the coolest thing ever.

Hockey is cool--particularly when you are down at ice level and see the players crash into the boards in front of you

Some of the more affluent schools in my area has Rugby; my cousin is a rugby player too--i think rugby players have the edge over american football players

Exactly
Although I don't mind sitting higher up. Just the whole sport, the speed of it and the nonstop action on the ice, I love it. It's not as fun on TV because they control what you see... I like being at the stadium.

Anya's one of those people who likes to go to hockey games, actually. Lot different watching it live, you have to admit.

Hockey should be more popular in the States than it is. Not by too much... maybe get ratings of 3.5-4.0 instead of 1.5.

For a while, the only channel that hockey would be viewed on was some obscure home and gardening channel. But I think that's been resolved. I don't watch it much on TV, because like I said, I only think it's fascinating in person.

Is that an actual estimate or did you just make that number up?

I mean, wow 1.5.

Don't these people have cable so they can watch NFL? NBA? Golf?

1.5 was what the NBC broadcast last weekend got, I think.

The OLN games are averaging 0.2 which is just hideous.

I bet that same amount of people can be found at a local Mom & Pop's store buying Bacon Bits.

Seriously.

i wonder what the ratings for baseball was like after the baseball strike of 1994. people then said that was the end of baseball but well, we still have baseball now; I think give it a few years and things should improve.

I think I only have been to one game during my whole life so far. I don´t have much memory of it, though.

As for Baseball, we don´t have much of that at all.

sweden fielding a baseball team in the olympics...that would be interesting. There should be an olympics of countries playing sports that aren't powerhouses of a particular sport

As far as I know, Baseball isn't really that popular all over the world. Seems like football is one of the few sports that have a international appeal. (or what you crazy americans call soccer for some reason... )

Meh, I don't get what's so fun to watch sports.

I never understood the whole football/soccer deal. Did America create football before we started playing soccer? Why would they screw it up like that?

I like the names. Soccer and Football, I mean.

Meh, they could call American Football the 'Oval Shape Pig Ball sport' and I would still watch it.

11. The word soccer does not come from the United States but was a term used by public school and university students, most notably at Oxford, in the 19th Century to shorten the new game “Association Football”. The predilection to shorten words with “er” extended to Rugby too, known as rugger. -- Quoted from some UK site

...Interesting.
And then they just used good ol "football" to name american football. How creative!

Well, it was called football because you used your foot to kick the ball. That only happens occasionally in America, of course.

Some people in the UK call American football "Gridiron". Yup.

True but it's also the simplest and most logical (even if it's not correct) explanation.

I can back up my other claim though.

The word "gridiron" alone may refer either to the field or to the sport; however, in North America it's mostly used in reference to the field, usually in a somewhat poetic sense. In some other English-speaking countries—particularly Australia and New Zealand—it is the primary term used to refer to the sport, differentiating it from other forms of football such as Australian rules football, association football (soccer), or rugby football.
