I think my biggest download would have to be the entire Slayer discography, at about 1.03 GB. I don't remember how long it took.

Meh, I recently... downloaded two movies over internet. Only limit was the other people using it.

Meh, I had a silly reason for downloading a certain movie...

How much could I do in one day, realistically speaking... I can download at around 200KB/s when the connection's stable. So in a minute, I can download roughly 12MB. 12 * 60 = 720MB in an hour if everything holds up.

So of course, if I wanted to I could probably do 9-10GB in a day. My ISP might hate me after a few days of that though.

What movie was that, hmm?

My downloads has been at 500kB/s sometimes. Depends on how many people that shares and downloads the file, though.

Yeah, but that's a pretty fast university connection, no?

My connection used to be like crap but I think they added more boxes around my area on telephone lines and the like... now it's stable + faster, which I'm not going to complain about.

Yup. I was able to exploit a 1MB/s download on a PIII-833MHz at my library workplace. I remember getting 800KB/s from Princeton...more than 5,000 miles from my school

Eh. My download speed is around 157 KB/s, thought it often fades to 100 KB/s on big downloads

It's still way better than my old 56k, though. And it's the best offered in my area. So...

Back when I used to have dial-up last year, just about all my downloads were 30 KB/s. Now that I have broadband, now it's 300 or something KB/s. Of course, I didn't mind if my downloads took a long time back then because I just find something better to do while I wait for my download.

30 is amazingly good for 56k. I mean... Amazingly good. ... ... ... Wha?

A 56k modem is incapable of getting above 7K/second (56kilobits) (and it will never hit 7K/s)

Best I ever got with my 56k was around 4.5 to 5K/s. I happened to have a pretty good connection back then but there's no way you can get above that.

I thought it was great that NES roms were downloading in around 1-2 minutes. XD

So Zem, explain how that thing many companies are touting that quintuples the speed of standard dialup then. I'm curious and, amazingly, wikipedia says nothing.

If you were to add "works" after "dialup" then one could understand your sentence on the first read

I guess you are talking about those web accelerator things right? I dunno, I never used one. Maybe you were looking in the wrong place because wikipedia says plenty though. Most of the acceleration probably comes from prefetching links while you're idling and compressing incoming data through proxy.

Eh. At times when I was using 56k, I saw download speeds increase eightfold, to 24 KB/s from 3, and that wouldn't fit with that...

I could see the speed starting high at the beginning of a download and then going down from there since what was displayed was the result of an inaccurate calculation.

I have downloads start at 1200K/s sometimes but they ALWAYS go down to what they're supposed to me. My connection was never that fast; that's what the program in question calculated it as.

No, I mean, it stayed that way for entire downloads quite a lot of the time. And yeah, it was actually transferring that fast.

Max I ever saw was around 6K. So yeah.

Alastor, that's called compression. With Some dial-up connections the download is compressed between the dial-up and your ISP.

I only saw download speeds like that in the first few seconds of my downloads. Then it dropped to 4-5K/s. Too bad.

And how the hell was a 56k modem able to download that fast?
