It's a summon where a Mind Flayer shows up and blasts a single enemy, doing a decent amount of damage with a chance to confuse.

Eh, better than the random porn IMs some people seem to get...and I've gotten one of.

As for the "extra" summons, Cockatrice is useful if you get it randomly early on, but the other two are worthless even then.

Cockatrice is likely a Stone effect but I've never played around with it because I never got it. :\

Cockatrice damages a foe and has a decent chance of petrifying (instantly killing) an enemy. Goblin, the other one, does a small amount of damage. Oh, and looking at this list there's also Bomb, which does a decent amount of damage, but not much more than the "Chocobo" summon the character already has. Mind Flayer would be decent at this point, but you can't get it until a decent amount of time later...and you can't USE it until later still, when the character has MUCH better things to cast.

That's what I'm guessing.

Bomb really isn't that useful and Goblin is more of a "nice to have for completion's sake" summon... although I can get THAT one in FF4 without any difficulties. Go figure.

Well, I would have said more, but didn't feel like writing spoilers. Since you seem interested, though...

Spoiler:
There is one character in FF4 who can summon. Her name is Rydia. You have her for a little while during the early part of the game, during which time you can get the Goblin, Bomb, and Cockatrice summons. At one point you lose her, thinking at the time that she's dead, and you can't get the Mind Flayer summon before that time. You can get it before you get her back, but only she can use it...and when she comes back, she's got a lot more powerful stuff.


Item drop rates are pretty bad.
