Anything that has anything to do with magic (I'm aware it plays a very minor part in almost all forms of it) is not something I'm willing to call a religion.

Scientology's full of crap, too, but that's a story for another day.

Wicca's not a cult. Or, even if it is, it's completely harmless so nobody cares.

The whole thing is pretty silly.

Funny, I remember that I liked Tiny toons alot but my memories about that show is very... fuzzy. Meh, then I probably played more video games than watching TV back then, now I hardly watch TV at all. xD Or play video games at that, but I really don't own any console yet... :/

If you take some of the definitions of cult literally, it is in fact a cult

The point is, cult has negative connotations and nobody ever hurt anybody doing Wicca because they just dance around being dumbasses and spelling magic with a K. Also they put out cookbooks and pretend there was a Wicca-based utopia thousands of years before Wicca even existed.

I think Wicca is about on par with most other religions, which I admit I would not have casually put down in this thread due to potential backlash. I guess I've got kind of a double standard there.

So, to be fair: I think Wicca, like most modern religions, is silly.

...

However, most people in mainstream religions were raised in that religion, whereas most Wiccans actively adopted those beliefs...

I know what I have read on the subject, and that has lead me to believe it's even more full of crap than most religions on the market today. If you would like to say why this is incorrect, go ahead; do not simply say that I am wrong, however, as that tells me nothing.

By the way, shouldn't the topic title be changed? Seeing as how it no longer applies for another year.

Wiccans have a wide vast array of beliefs that can't be encompassed in one definition. There are ritualistic wiccans... highly ritualistic.. and there are wiccans who simply accept the core beliefs and kind of go and do their own thing with it. I am from the latter pool.

To be wiccan you accept that there are forces at work which you can identify with. You have control over what you do, and how you effect people. Personally, I identify with reincarnation and have alot of Buddhist beliefs. I believe in spirit guides... and if you aren't paying close enough attention.. you won't realize that they're trying to help you out.. in very subtle ways. I have a great respect for the perfectness of nature... I value all walks of life (animals, people, even trees and flowers)... and I recognize that there are forces at work in nature that affect us on a subconcious level (the patterns of the moon, the path of the sun.. and of course, even the stars).

Because I believe in Spirit Guides, I believe they can help you guide your life. They want to give you hints and help you.. but they can't like talk to you... obviously. So, Tarot Cards and other tools of divination make sense to me... because they're a way for you to connect to some sort of higher being who can guide you. In a way. Or, maybe I'm just reading too much into probability. I'm doubtful of that though.. considering how accurate readings can be.

I prefer this religion.. because you have CONTROL over it. There isn't some fluffy being that you can't relate or connect to telling you what to do, how to pray... and is pretty much stone cold. Being a Wiccan... I can reach deep down and feel around for what I really really truely believe.. and there's no one to tell me that it's wrong or sinful. Because I believe in reincarnation.. I think people have an innate idea of what happens after death.. they just have to feel around for it and feel it in their soul.

And if you don't think that spirit guides, respect for nature, reincarnation and astrology/moon worship AREN'T ancient ideas... you're in la la land. I don't know what you've been reading.

I'm sick of people gasping in horror when they find out I'm Wiccan. Or calling me a nutjob. Stop.

I was thinking specifically of how some of the early proponents of Wicca claimed there used to be an egalitarian, utopian society, thousands of years ago, which then got persecuted, went underground (not literally), and passed on Wicca in secret till today. This is something I read a while ago, so I don't have a source for it, though.

Anyway, Wicca, to me, seems like a big old mishmash of all the feelgood nonsense untestable supernatural pseudoscience of today. I put tarot readings on the same level as astrology: vague bullshit that's applicable to everyone. I've gotten a "reading" a couple of times, and each time it has been no more specific than "there is something you know you should be doing which you're avoiding.... there are changes in store... blah blah blah"
