So today in class, I was sitting there drawing during the lecture, some girl comes in late and sits next to me. She starts drawing, after the first break she says "hey do you want to see my drawings?" I say yes, I look at them, and they're completely terrible .

I'm still wondering why someone would show off something that isn't good, but it's something I see all the time, because people don't really know the standard that is "good." I know it's something I'm guilty of in the past; showing off something that completely sucks because I haven't seen much better done by my peers.

Yeah I just felt like mentioning that. It was one of those "pathetically cute" things that only women can pull off [if it were a man it would just be "hey man you suck."]. Damn you women

yes, there are certain things only a girl can do. my favorite one occurs when a girl goes into a store (say starbucks for example) and then asks for a drink and doesn't like it. Then she goes, in a some what pouty voice "uh...i don't like it" and gets another drink because of that...

It's because of these reasons women will rule the Earth.

setz: Happened to me in an English class. Was writing some poetry, girl next to me decided to grace me with her poetry and truth be told, it sucked and blowed at the same time. Thing is, she acted like she just wrote the best thing to ever touch paper.

She didn't handle the news well when I said "Okay, nice try. How about showing me something that doesn't look like shit on paper?"

Now you know why I have no friends.

Edit: Forgot a word in a sentence. Silly me.

I don't take crap from anyone. Any attempts at that get equally squashed... and generally people are too shocked their BS has failed to argue.

But, yeah, there are sucky people. Sometimes they take a while to crack.

Might as well encourage than discourage. IRL doesn't equal the internet. So you really feel like a sucky person yourself for making someone discouraged. I'd just say, "Keep at it."

I think it's partially vaildation seeking, too. If you know your thing sucks but you get someone to say it's good, you might convince yourself it's worthwhile again.

True, but in that case, I say it's worth it. Don't settle for a first down, go for the end zone.

The topic isn't "Lets bash people who have no women skills" guys . Yay to waw for being the only one on-topic.

In general, if I know something I made sucked, I wouldn't show it to anyone, for the shame of creating something that isn't worth shit. I guess this is my attempt at figuring out how people other than me think. I have a standard set for myself where it seems something I make that I think is below average, is stunning to others.

[00:38] <Spliff> http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=5997 <--- Setz you cannot seriously think this girl wanted you to see her drawings and that was IT

As I stated, I know that isn't what she wanted, but that's the first impression I got from her; that something worth showing off in her eyes is something worth being ashamed of in mine.

"Keep at it." alone is suggesting the person would keep sucking; I've always felt that harsh critisism [sp?] is the best way to improve [But I've always been very disciplined, strong-willed, and iron-fisteded], but you can't tell a cute girl she sucks to her face when you just meet her .

How would you think to get better without asking people what's wrong?

Provide helpful comments instead of just grimacing and lying. It's infinitely more useful.

Xk: There's a difference between showing something off, and showing something to someone. In this case it was obvious she really didn't care about the drawing but most likely just wanted a reason to talk to someone. But in general I've noticed alot of people try to pass off horrible [object]s and go so far as to get offended when you point out the weak parts--even when you're polite about it. You can tell by the way someone is talking if they actually care what you think about what they've made, or if they just want it to be admired.

I WANT MY ART TO BE ADMIRED!!!

Okay, sometimes I DO just want a little bit of a pat on the back for 17+ hours of coloring in.

Most the time I like my critiques to be balanced though. If you point out something bad, point out something I did good too Otherwise how am I gonna know that I'm not a total screwup?

Thats a problem I seem to have . I'm so critical of myself anymore that the main parts I see are the weak areas of anything; compared to a few years ago where I could see only the beauty. I've either become a perfectionist or a negativist =P.

I've found the best pat on the back is from someone who is more skilled than you; There's a big difference when someone who sucks tells you "I'm impressed" and when someone who's skill you think is un-fuckwith-able tells you the same thing, so if you work hard and make it great you will get ass-kissing, and not just from noobs but from professionals and critics alike. In short if you're determined and practice enough, and know what the really great artwork looks like, eventually you will reach that level, and the same goes for everything. except having babies because guys will never be able to do that

I also tend to focus on my failings to the exclusion of the things I've done well -- if I see a flaw, it will more often than not detract from all the rest of the hard work and good things I did.

Then cause all that's in my head, it just builds up and gets worse.

It's actually quite a relief to hear what I have done right from others (as well as what (and how) I need to improve)-- because I sure as hell won't see it myself, or give myself any kudos for it.

I balanced critiquing.

Empty arse kissing doesn't do much for me either. No substance to it, so good or negative none of what's said will stick

One thing I find is that when you make something, you tend to think it's really good just because you made it, even if it actually sucks. Ideally, look at it again in a week or two and see if you still think it's great. There's a lot of things I would never have released if I'd done that.

That describes me as a begginer, now I only release about 1/4th of what I make, if that, because I'm aware of flaws much sooner than I was able to before; sometimes it's so bad I never finish something because it just needs too much work. When I look back on older things I've released I can hear god killing a kitten.

Taryn: The empty arse kissing thing is a good point, but to be honest... if someone looks at your work and can't find a single flaw with it, then what are they supposed to do? Make something up?

Nobody's perfect at anything overnight. You might be *good* or show some skill your first time, but if you keep at it you'll definitely notice the difference.

They either aren't looking hard enough or aren't well versed enough in what they're being asked to analyze.

Setz, wanting to go back in time and punch yourself is the best sign of true progress. Trust me, it's much better than still thinking all that crap is good.

I don't get all this egglaying in skulls thing. You guys are boys. You don't have eggs.

You have sperm.
