However it isn't nuclear. They don't have nuclear weapons. Basically they're just test firing their new ballistic missile. Which is any nation's sovereign right. |

| As much as I don't like North Korea, they do have the right to test missles. It's not like it matters anyway; any major nation could wipe out North Korea with little difficulty. I kind of wish North Korea would nuke the U.S. so it could be all Mad Max-like. That'd kick ass. | |||

| Well, I would have to be worried for you guys...As much as this means nothing, now that they have the capability it may certainly seem a threat, especially since they have a large distaste for America, and vice versa (lol @ axis of evil).
But I wouldn't live in fear. I'd hope my president was smart enough to try and repair relations with North Korea. And maybe Iran. Too late for Iraq (One down, two to go team!). |

| North Korea have been threatening nuclear weapons for awhile now, are an extremely anti-freedom regime, hate the US, etc. Yet we do nothing. Iraq was minding it's own business at the moment, Saddam was co-operating for the most part (i remember seeing them dismantling missiles over there a month or so before our invasion), and we came down hard on them. It makes no sense to me. I'm not advocating we attack North Korea, but they clearly seemed like a bigger threat than Iraq from day 1. | |||

| They're not going to go into North Korea because you don't want to piss off China. Now, if for some reason China put their foot down on North Korea, then they'd be screwed because you'd have China on one side and South Korea on the other.
Besides, North Korea is more talk than action. The propaganda and BS that comes out of that place... augh. It's the regime, I know, but still. The BBC's speculating that the States turned on their missile defense system. Would be a good test for it, although I'm wondering if "shooting down a test missile" equals "act of war". In North Korea's mind, probably "yes". |

| And what are they going to hit the US with? Some kidnappings? The Taepedong-2 isn't operational yet. It is being tested by the NK government to allow for that retaliation people imagine might happen. It takes tanks and tanks and tanks of fuel to fill up a 9000+ range missile. Fuel that the North really doesn't have. So much so that they can't possibly hope to fire multiple missiles at the US seaboard. If I remember reading about the missile in a defence periodical it is in excess of 60 tonnes. That's a lot of weight to make fly into the air ;( Physics students of the board, unit! Tell us how much it'll take to lob that sucker at LA or San Fran or some place no one would think of attacking due to the cost-to-damage ratios...say Portland.
Colin: the North has a LOT of action going on. Gas chambers, torture prisons. You know, an actual massive store of biological and chemical weapons. LOTS. A massive military that can level Seoul and the surrounding area in 09 minutes and cause hundreds of thousands. Frankly, any talk coming out of a nation with that much capability is a worry. As for China, they've got bigger fish to fry. North Korea is an irritating throne in their side. They know that they have to support the regime or else face a destabilized and collapsing nation on their borders. Which is a headache to any country. I hear Syria's government is going bitch wild due to the craziness on their borders with Iraq. Needless to say the regime is terrible, China probably is not too cool with Kim Jong-Il right now, but god knows that they NEED him. They don't have many other friends in the region. Although they're strengthening their position to the West in their territory. They can't really do much in the East because of Japan and South Korea having decent militaries plus a massive US presence. I still think that if war were declared on North Korea China wouldn't do too much. Too much of a burden. Probably have a bit of a mouth piece. Fire at some ships and cause some problems...but the international community at large would probably just say "Yeah, North Korea is going down. brb China" However, Iran is closer to Europe, borders Iraq, and is basically the same thing as North Korea (but with a slightly less repressive regime). Besides, Iran has missile capabilities that are a lot more of a present danger to the US presence in the region. Them sunburn missiles are nasty and can wipe out the Persian Gulf of all enemy vessels. Needless to say, Iran is the worry. The lip service is going to North Korea only temporarily. As for the missile defence shield...HA! It's on when friendly nations have launches. Whenever NORAD picks up a minor blip. It's basically on call at all times. I just don't think that they're going to waste x billion dollars to risk an international laughing stock. |

So the North Koreans launched some missiles...Big deal. Their only long range missile failed miserably! In 40 seconds after launch it blew up. If you ask me, I think North Korea is only letting us see what they want us to see. For anyone else out there that recently had a powerout, I think we're all in for a load more trouble. |

| South Korea is very US-backed, as well, so China doesn't want them that close to their borders. North Korea used to be sort of a buffer zone between China and US-style Democracy, but at this point I'm pretty sure NK is giving China more than they bargained for.
Jomb, I completely agree about the Iraq thing. I after Afghanistan I sorta made a mental list of other countries that the US might have to invade in it's terrorism clamp-down, and Iraq was definately not on that list at all. I was actually thinking Iran or NK, funny that they're all over the news now... People are sorta underestimating the NK military, I think. Going into NK with ground troops would be a hell of a job. NK's budget is 20% making Kim Jong Il happy, 79% preparing the military and creating pro-Kim Jong propaganda, and 1% giving a couple people rice so not everyone starves. (Not actual figures, but you get my drift.) They would not be an easy fight. Due to the massive amounts of brainwashing people have recieved in NK, I'm sure there would be some civilian resistance to an invasion as well. EDIT: What I would really like to see here is some other country besides the US take the initiative on fixing North Korea. China, maybe, since they're on the path to being a legitimate superpower. Not saying that the US shouldn't send troops if there's an invasion or anything, but if the US gets all up in arms about invading a country again, I don't know if ANYONE will back them. I feel sorry for whoever comes after President Bush. He gets to inherit a complete mess of nuclear threats and bad foreign relations. (edited by witeasprinwow on 07-05-06 12:20 AM) |

| North korea can threaten as much as they want. Its like an internet bully, who will act all tough, but is really some wuss stting at his computer and looking up porn.
They can test all the missiles in their arsenal. As far as taking any offensive action, it wont happen. Its not the US they are afraid of. They have no one on their side. They can do anything against anyone without all of that anyones allies retaliating. Its like I can get an M4 and shoot it around some police officers. But if I attack one of them, the others attack me. North korea can test their missiles, but they cant do anything, because its not the US that would kick their asses, its our allies. Have you ever heard of Tsar Bomba? It is the largest bomb ever set off. Its russian made. 57 megatons. Russia tested it during the cold war as a method of intimidation. Guess what? That was it for tsar bomba. They poured all of their time and money into building a giant bomb, just so they could wave it in the face of all hundred thousand of our bombs, and englands bombs, and alot of other peoples bombs. Big deal. They made a huge bomb. So what? YOU BLEW IT UP. ITS GONE NOW. North korea just wants attention, it wants to establish itself in our minds as a threat. -Pyris |
