In case you haven't heard, once I'm done with Sylvanian Families 1 for GBC, my next project will be Sylvanian Families 4 for GBA.

There are three reasons why I'm skipping the two games in between.

1. I'm paying homage to Square-Enix and will release my SF4 patch under the title "Sylvanian Families 2". Okay, just kidding there.

2. I can't freakin' find a ROM of the third game (also for GBC), "Hoshifuru Yoru no Sunatokei" or "Hourglass of the Night of Shooting Stars". (If I'm making the right assumptions, I'll probably crunch that down to "The Wishing Glass". Too bad I can't figure out anything good for the first game's "Otogi no Kuni no Pendant", or "The Pendant of Fairyland", which sounds unreasonably clunky to me...)

If anyone can provide a ROM of the third game, please let me know.

3. The second game has Shiritori.

One of the school minigames in "Irozuku Mori no Fantasy" ("Colorful Forest Fantasy"...would anyone look down upon me if I changed that to "Rainbow Forest Adventure" or some such?) is Shiritori, the distinctly Japanese children's word game. The rules are simple: players take turns reciting words, each of which (apart from the first in the chain, naturally) must begin with the final syllable of the previous word.

To borrow an example I used on another site, say the first player starts with "ichigo" (strawberry)...then, the next player says "gome" (rice), next player says "megane" (eyeglasses), then "nezumi" (mouse)...and so on. You lose if you say a word that ends in the same syllable that it begins with (i.e. "mimi", ears) or a word that ends in "n" (like "mikan" here, because no Japanese word begins with the lone "n" syllable). And, as I failed to note before, you also lose if you repeat a word somebody else already said (IIRC). As you can see, the game is difficult to adapt to English without changing the rules significantly, and changing the rules means code hacking that I really don't want to do if I don't have to probably impossible to adapt into English. On the plus side, the game doesn't seem to rely on a dictionary: pure gibberish will work as long as it abides by the rules (on a lark, I tried "Daimaou" when it was acceptable and the game had no problems; I sincerely doubt the game features "Great Demon King" in its word list).

So what would you do in this case? Try to kludge Shiritori into English? Maybe attempt to replace it with another game entirely? Just skip the game and pray nobody asks for it? Or the ubiquitous "other"?

Eeeyeah. The way I can figure it working best is basically making it into the similar English game, with a few restructions. IE, word chains could proceed along like Red, Devil, Leprechaun, Now, but if someone said Willow they'd lose. Perhaps also ending a sentence with vowel is illegal? I don't know, that's as close as I can figure it without confusing myself. So I'd have to vote try to kludge it into english.

Oh...that's genius. Sure, there are lots of words that begin with vowels, but that's genius...change the rules so that ending a word in a vowel is illegal instead of "n". That's awesome. That, I'm sure I could change.

See, that's the evil genius thing about the GB games: what makes them so hard to translate, the whole "tangled mess of bytecode and text" issue, also makes them easy to bend in my own image. Text boxes, menues, cursors...all of it is governed by codes in the script.
