Most things are OK in moderation. (OK, so some stuff probably isn't, like heroin, but still.)

Having a glass of wine a day is good. Having a bottle a day...

Ok, this is a pretty valid reason, and part of the reason why I don't smoke. (More specifically, the damage isn't worth any sort of reward. Plus I have an addictive personality, so I know I would become one of those two-packs-a-day guys.)

Still, I despite the fact that I drink, I don't intend on keeping it up til I'm 40 and destroying my liver.

I'm not afraid. I just don't like the fact that smoking ruins lungs and drinking ruins brains and bodies.

You know, I can agree on both things, but they're both disputable. Red wine, for example, can have positive effects on your health, and for some reason it's awesome for stopping radiation poisoning in small doses. Worked for the russians, anyway, if that says anything at all.

Smoking is a great relaxant, but I think you can do more damage to your body by using a cellphone or using the microwave in the long term. Smoking has been here for ages, but nobody can really predict how the good old nuke machine will affect people's health in the long run.

I mean, think if it this way, when smoking was popular, nobody thought it was damaging to your health, but it can cause carcinogens to manifest into cancer within your lungs and other areas of the body. The Microwave has only been around for so long, and we think it's all fine and dandy, but I think we will have to wait and see about that.

Sorry for bringing that a little off topic...

I personally prefer the Native cigarettes over regular brands, anyhow. It's a bit of a hassle to get, but they're 100% natural AND cheap as dirt, so that kinda works out in both ways.

Everyone at my work smokes except for me ... they'll always jokingly ask me if "I want one?" but I'll always shrug, and they really don't care.

Its funny because I've probably heard half of them say "Yeah, I've been trying to quit" and then pull out a cigarette.

And I've only had sips of alcohol, again through work. One day we were closed, and needed to clean the place up pretty well. So everyone decied to get drunk and clean. I had a few sips of some green apple stuff that tasted exactly like cough medicine, so I didn't care to have much of it.

I could really careless. You drink, or smoke, or whatever. Oh well? That's your thing.

That's how I wish more people would feel. If you're not hurting anybody else in the process, I don't see a problem.

I have a slight issue with smokers who are inconsiderate of others (ie, won't smoke outside / passive smoking), but provided most smokers ask if their non-smoking companions mind or not if they smoke, it's fine with me.

I have an issue with abusive drunks too.

All comes down to the whole "not hurting anybody else" thing

errrybody in the clubbar gettin tipsy

(Okay, not really. I'm not THAT much of a lightweight. At this point, I just feel nice.)

Tarale: Worse are the abusive, drunken dudebro, roided-up types. The place I just went, fight almost broke out over someone dropping a beer bottle on someone else's girlfriend's foot. Why can't people just see that case and say "oh, it was an accident, that's okay" and move on? (Looked like the fight was averted when I left.) No need to flex nuts.

Because if you say "It's an accident, no harm, no foul", there isn't any chance for someone to win by coming out on top in a fight. So much stupid human behavior can be explained by the reptilian brain's desire to be TEH WINNAR. A good example is asshats who feel the need to race ahead of as many cars as possible at a merge point. (I'm talking about specifically trying to beat other people to the merge for no apparent reason, not about speeding up to get around a slow vehicle or get into a space in the other lane.) This doesn't help them get where they're going faster, but they go ahead and do it anyway.

Because it's hard to remember at times that you should THINK before taking an action. Most people act compulsively, that's just how people are. Speeding ahead in a merging lane makes people feel like they're getting ahead, without actually THINKING that it's going to do nothing but further slow down the traffic.

And, well, when it comes to thinking and alcohol, the two don't go hand in hand very often.

Yeah. Somehow I doubt that the knuckle-dragging Bro Magnon types in drjayphd's story think things through when they're not drinking. No wonder they get violent over nothing when inebriated.

The refreshing bit is most of us that were nearby were also quite inebriated, but still coherent enough to know there was no need for blows to be thrown. Good thing it didn't come to it.

(snicker) Bro Magnon. I like that one.

Me, I can act drunk just by being tired... try talking to me at 2 AM. People have refused to believe I'm sober then.

But you know, alcohol doesn't have the same appeal of caffiene, to me.

You don't need alcohol to stimulate yourself, though, just like you don't need caffeine to do that either. While alcohol may have stronger effects on a person, it still isn't a worthy excuse. People don't get drunk as a replacement of caffeine.

Alcohol is a depressant.

I wasn't arguing whether you need them or not (stimulants that is). I was simply saying that caffeine is obscenely lame.

LIES!! You take that back! You take that back now!!

Caffeine is the only thing keeping me from losing my sanity most mornings at work.

Oddly, I only ever have even the remotest need for it though, when I am working...

I can believe that. Trip out to Seattle, didn't get any sleep before (early morning flight). I was up for probably 36 hours straight, and if you saw me, you'd probably think I was shitfaced. I know I sounded it, too. And that was after probably 10 or 11 cups of coffee on the plane.
