Hey everyone. I just started here and this seemed the best place to go for help with the FFHackster, and I have a lot of questions that I just... well... would like to know. Mind you, the version of the game I am using is patched as the FF Bug Fix that I Joshua Ball made on Slick Productions. ( http://slick.panicus.org/ff1patch.php?id=FF1BugFix ) Well, let me start off here with some basic questions.

Is it possible to change the class titles in the opening select? (Blk Mage > Bard, Wht Mage > Dancer, etc)
Is it possible to seperate the color palete? (I don't want Fighter and Ninja to be similarly colored.)
Is it possible to change the screen where the 'true' opening and the closing is? (When crossing the bridge and when you beat Chaos)
Is it possible to change the text at the begining and end of the game (Four warriors and the Orbs, Success of the Warriors)
How do you change the sprites of town folk? (Arylon the dancer is a notable difference.)
Is it possible to insert a prompted battle? (Garland, Pirates, Astos, Vampire, Fiends, Chaos)
Is it possible to add extra townsfolk? (Say I want a pirate in Corneria? [Coneria? wtfever])
If so, can they talk?

And lastly for now, if there is anything I can do here, but can't do with FFHackster, what do I need, and where do I find it?

Griff Morivan

P.S. Is there any total walkthrough? More than a hint here and an idea there?

P.P.S. Is it possible to change all those black squares on the sprite editor to actual colors? (I need a yellow, specifically)

Class Editor or Text Editor, I don't remember which one it's in.

Is it possible to seperate the color palete? (I don't want Fighter and Ninja to be similarly colored.)

Would require some special hacking. Since there's only two palettes to choose from, I'd assume you wanted to expand beyond that.

Is it possible to change the screen where the 'true' opening and the closing is? (When crossing the bridge and when you beat Chaos)

Of course! Probably with a tile editor.

Is it possible to change the text at the begining and end of the game (Four warriors and the Orbs, Success of the Warriors)

Yes, they are in text. Use the table to search for those strings.

How do you change the sprites of town folk? (Arylon the dancer is a notable difference.)

Tile editor of choice.

Is it possible to insert a prompted battle? (Garland, Pirates, Astos, Vampire, Fiends, Chaos)

Would require finding the event code.

Is it possible to add extra townsfolk? (Say I want a pirate in Corneria? [Coneria? wtfever])

I believe the max per room at any given time is 15 sprites, because of the format.

If so, can they talk?

What they say is dependant on what sprite is assigned to them, IIRC.

And lastly for now, if there is anything I can do here, but can't do with FFHackster, what do I need, and where do I find it?

There's always more you can do with straight hex editing than any editor will offer, unless it's Lunar Magic with the "do my hack for me" button.

P.S. Is there any total walkthrough? More than a hint here and an idea there?

For FFHackster? *shrug*

P.P.S. Is it possible to change all those black squares on the sprite editor to actual colors? (I need a yellow, specifically)

That's the transparent color, and you'd have to do some color swaping to get everything back in working order.

By the way, you may want to run a search for "FFHackster Companion."

Okay, thus far I've answered a few questions through some minor help and some poking around. I figured out the Class Name changing, and I'm not too concerned with the color to make a fuss. I have not found a tile editor that'll do what I want with that title screen, nor have I found where to edit the special texts (Warriors with Orbs, Starting their Quest, killing Chaos, all that). I've... kinda... found out how to make townfolk different, but it works on a give-take sort of thing. Man from Provoka will always say "HELP!" or what have you. Prompted battles ARE possible through the FFHplus, and I have nooooo clue how to change an actual sprite of a towny. So, yeah. There are still some standing questions, but I can get to work. More or less.

Changing sprites is simple, in the map editor there are three pulldown lists, the first is the sprite number (You can have 16 per map), the second is the sprite itself (Which you already figured out how to edit in FFHackster Companion), the third is the graphic that sprite uses.

Alright, now this is something for me, and I've got a problem. Maybe I'm dee dee dee, but.

I can't seem to find where to go to get the values for the intro and all that. Because I followed the advice in the old thread...

http://board.acmlm.org/archive/thread.php?id=1199

But now I'm stuck, cause I can't enter the values. It says there is a limit that is 300...something. Now, am I doing this wrong? Someone give me a more detailed walkthrough of finding these, cause I feel fuckin' stupid.

~~~
Okay, new problem as I'm coming along. Other than the intro text and all that.
Is there any way I can have the same sprite in two different places and NOT say the same thing? My example is this.
I went into Corneria and made the boy from Provoka say something stupid, then attack with Imps. (Doable with FFHackster and the Companion), and then put the same guy in the Temple of Fiends, all the way to the north of the room. This time, I wanted him to come at me with pirates. Problem was, when I talked to him in Corneria, he had the pirates.
Is there some kind of restriction on using a sprite twice, or am I just Shit outta luck?
It sounds like you changed the Imp event for his Temple of Fiends appearance instead of making a new event. You'll have to make a new event and assign that to his Temple of Fiends sprite, I think. I may be wrong there, but if I am there's no irreversible damage.
Yeah, I cleared that one up. My problem now lies with basicly my two big things. The major scene texts (Opening, cross bridge, beat Chaos), and then wanting to be able to edit the screen that the latter two are displayed on.
One person somewhere on this site said that you load the Text Editor, File > Table > DTE Table. Did that. Then they said go to $30...something. But the problem, is, any number over $300001 I think it said doesn't exist.
That's because there's an extra zero. It's really in the $30000 range. Don't know the exact location, but six digit hex locations isn't how FF1 rolls.
Alright, new question.
I want to make it so that I can completely eliminate Lefien, but do a couple, slightly slightly odd things. Allow me to explain. In another town, (probably where Gaia now resides) I want to have an area where you will walk up to someone and talk to them. They will say something like,
The magics beyond this point could bring catastrophy. I will allow none to pass. Not even you, Warriors of Light. -Begin pretty hard fight, comparable to, maybe, Tiamat or some such-
Then, when you beat him, you walk forward a smidge, and it's another sprite (another Lefien, but the same character), and he will say something kinda dank before dying. When this happens, you can go forward and get all the level 8 magics in one section of this town.
Now, the thing is. I sort of want this battle to trigger the other person appearing. Like he won't show up until you beat the 'boss' fight. Kinda like when you talk to Garland 3 times before he appears as Chaos. -=-edit-=- But, like, in reverse.
Is this possible?
NEW QUESTION!
Is it possible to make seperate towns or edit shops? I want to make it so that specific things are a small town. Like a weird merchant town. Is it possible to make a new town that won't warp me to another town, or perhaps warp me to an unused section of town.
FFHackster can do all that, but you'll have to replace one of the maps with the new town. It doesn't have to be an existing town (you can change the tileset with Hackster to turn anything into a town, so you could remove one of the dungeon levels), but the entrance to that area will become the entrance to the town. So you could go to Sarda's Cave, redesign the cave's layout into the town, and then change the cave entrance tile into a town sprite.
You could also use exits to have multiple small towns on one map, but that makes things complicated and could interfere with the exit spell. As for shops, FFHackster has a shop editor, and there are several unused shops in the game (already linked to some of the shop door tiles in the editor). You can set up those shops, then just put the right doors in the town.
Hey everyone. I'm back here rather than making a whole new thread and cluttering up our forum with more one-shot question threads from me.
My question right now is this.
http://www.lyzrdstomp.com/binary/hex1.html has a guide to Hex hacking for beginers, and in the text section, it goes over Dragon Warrior 1. It says go into NESticle (which there actually is a way to turn it on for XP), and open up the palet and copy down the numbers for every individual letter and make them into a table. for Dragon Warrior, they say dw1.tbl is a good name for it. Then, load the ROM and the table file into Thingy and edit it that way.
My question is, will this work, doing it this way? AND/OR does anyone already have the hex-symbols for all the numbers at letters? Because minimizing, maximizing, writing the number down... It's murdering my processing speed. Actually, NESticle in general is killing me. So, does anyone know the table/have the table file already?
I remember asking most of these questions in the past -- there's actually a wealth of information available if you use the search function for the forum. I remember that the text editing in particular was ridiculously easy as the opening is very, very well-documented. All I had to do was pop open the ROM in a text editor and start typing away at the selected location, replacing the original text.
I also do remember that there are tables for various things already available.
Search the forum, I can't remember where the threads are, exactly. Or, if you look at my posts (there aren't many), the first few should all be FF1-related.
Alright. I'm just sitting here typing away what I wrote down off of that demon program. But alright. I'll see what I can find.
Okay, folks. Maybe I am doing something wrong again, but lets see, shall we?
I attempted to import a bmp into my Hackster, wanting to use a different image for all the bosses. Specifically, I attempted to use a samurai from http://eds.castledragmire.com/tiles/index.htm for Tiamat, which lead me to try all the different characters all over my big bosses. The other images, not a problem just yet. What happens is that it comes out looking like..
