| Hey anybody know where i can find some resources for finding a good laptop to play most all emulators. For a good price of course. My budget is around 1500, possibly a little more or less.
Or is there any places special to buy them from for cheap? Edit: I was looking and at newegg there seams to be some good ones, but Dell is looking pretty cheap and customizable. Any specific video cards or processors i should be looking for? (edited by elixirnova on 06-10-06 01:43 AM) |

| I got my laptop from iBuyPower.com and aside from someone using it as a toilet it worked and lasted perfectly for a year (and probably would have survived much longer without the incident that lead to my insurance actually paying off for once). They've got pretty good prices but as far as I know they have no customer service, other than complaints in hardware for which they will replace it if it their fault. One bit of advice about their laptops, do not get one without a mobile processor. I had a P4 in mine and it ate up battery life mad crazy. Also, their laptops are not the lightest ones around, they're not exceedingly heavy, but they aren't light either. | |||

| I'm not all too worried about battery life or heavyness. But the P4's and AMD 64's are kinda hard to find with the stuff I want.
Mostly a powerful video card, reasonably good gaming processor, enough ram, and at least a dvd-rom, and anything else thats gonna be needed to run windows vista. BEcause i really wanna have it running that  .

Why, specifically, do you want Vista? If it's just for the games that "require" it, I bet you they're cracked to run on XP within minutes of release.  Just about everything Vista currently has is available on XP already if you look around. |

| isn't that laptop almost $3000? I remember seeing an ad in a computer magazine for that laptop and that was the listed price.
all you need from a laptop is a non-integrated video card made by ATi or nVidia, at least 512MiB of RAM, P4 w/ Hyper Threading (no centrino, no mobile celeron). Having that system setup will allow you to play most emulators through PSX generation. |

Both seam to fit all my needs but yea... just some minor differences. Both are pretty much same price, here they are. Inspiron E1705:dell Core Duo T2300E 1.66ghz 17" display 1GB DDR2-533mhz 100GB hard drive DVD+-RW 256MB Geforce Go 7900 GS Cost: $1448 Asus S96J [2] Notebook:Ibuypower Core Duo 2.0Ghz or 1.6Ghz 15.4" 1GB DDR2-533mhz 80GB hard drive DVD+-RW 256MB ATI X1600 Cost: 2.0ghz-$1439 cost: 1.6Ghz-$1279 On the further notes display size doesn't matter to me But will the 2.0Ghz/1.6Ghz give any noticable changes? What will I notice them in? Obviously the Asus is about $160 cheaper when they both have 1.6ghz processors. Is there any real differences between the ATI X1600 and the Geforce Go 7900GS. So in all is it worth going for 1.6Ghz with an ATI x1600 that is $160 cheaper. Or is the 1.6ghz with Geforce 7900GS worth the extra $160 along with a 17" display over the 15.4". This machine will be used for my engineering tinkering and programming durring college along with lots of n64 and psx emulation and some newer pc games whatever I can play on it .
Any advice, I really appreciated all the help so far! I sure hope these arn't both bad ideas O_o. |

| A seventeen inch display is huge and you'll really have to hunt to find a bag that it will fit in if you want to bring it somewhere. Other than that 2 vs 1.6 gHz is a 25% increase but I'm not sure of actuall differences that means but I'd expect it to improve significantly. | |||

| any laptop is fine as long as you have warranty...although using the warranty may be a pain. at this point, since the price is so close, I'd recommend considering other options such as battery life, weight, size, etc.
as for dell, I have a dell but I installed my own operating system so I didn't need to deal with the prepackaged software from dell, which I find useless for the most part. for the next generation of games, I think it is a toss up between the two cards with ATi slighly ahead (not sure though). Also, I have yet to run into a problem with any nVidia card but some games just don't like ATi for some reason. However, for emulation, either card is fine. |
