Hey, it's time for me to get a Nintendo DS! Does anyone know if there are any differences between the two besides the look (advantages & disadvantages)? Any new features, bug fixes, hardware improvement, firmware changes, homebrew capability, etc. Any info will be helpful to me, and many others! Thanks.

I met a Nintendo representative today!

At my job, we're phasing in the DS Lite, and the Ninty rep was in to promote it, drop off the advertising stuff, lanyards, pins, cardboard standups, and he had a DS Lite on him (alongside changing around our DS display to have a Lite) that I got to get my hands on.

Now... I'm not particularly a fan of the size. I liked my DS a lot, it's the perfect size for my hands. It's got a lot of structural integrity, though. The DS Lite's microphone is in the middle now, on the crossbar between the two, and they upped its sensitivity greatly. It actually works now, that is. The stylus is much bigger now, with a finer tip, so as to be a lot easier to use. I found this to be a big boon, and it feels more like a real pencil than the original did. The backlight's brighter, and believe it or not, the graphics are actually juuuuuuuuuust a little better than the original DS. Crisper, you know? Games look the same, but the image is just a little sharper. It's like the switch between the Game Boy and the Game Boy Pocket back in the 90s. But it's still an improvement. Headphone jack's in the right place, volume control is much more sensitive now, and the Game Boy Advance slot has a dummy cover so that junk doesn't get stuck inside of it. The power button's not above the D-pad now too, which is also a good thing, since the size of it (while previously I didn't have the problem that so many people who seem to be unable to use their DSes properly had) means that if the power button were in its original place, I'd probably be hitting it all the time.

My problem? It's so.... small. I really can't get my hands in just that right place in order to use it. I feel like I'll have the same problem I had with my GBP, my hands will eventually cramp up. I like the original DS design because it fits my hands perfectly. The Lite? It'll be the ideal choice for newbies to the DS scene (it's the same price as the DS original), but I won't upgrade...

Yeah, I'm asking the same question. I really want to get a DS this summer, but I don't know if I want a lite or the original. From what Grey said, I'd love the Lite, but not if it's $100 more than the original. =\ Once it is released and more people from Acmlm's get one, hopefully I hear more opinions to make my decision.

Man, I'm getting a DS Lite. The fact that Yoshi's Island 2 is coming out has confirmed this for me. I sold my original DS to my sister for £120. (I got it originally for £80 - nice profit made). Hopefully it wont be too small for my hands - afterall, my hands are in no way 'big'.

It's cool, Dani -- The DS Lite is retailing (at least at my TRU, anyway...) for about the same price as the DS. It's not a price leap at all, actually...

Yeah, they're rolling it out at the $129.99 price that the DS is now, and bumping down the DS some. I forget how much. Maybe around $109.99, give or take $10.

That's what I'm saying, is the DS gonna drop when the Lite comes out?
But I guess for $20, I'd just go with the Lite.

Still plays all the DS games and such, right?

Well, yeah. It plays all DS games and GBA games perfectly.

But the only problem is that due to the reduced size, GBA games stick out of the bottom a tiny bit. But thats no big deal for me.

...I dont know whether to spend my money on a lite, or to save my money and get a Wii in november. It may sound pretty lame, but with my illness right now and college work later on, I'm not going to have much money for a long, long, long time. Hm.

Pretty much:
1. Smaller. As if it's not already obvious.
2. The screen is brighter. The firmware has been changed to allow five different brightness levels (all of which are brighter than the original DS), and you can no longer turn the backlight off (the DS screen is so non-reflective anyway, you don't want to with either DS).
3. The sound is louder. As if the original DS wasn't already too loud
4. The mic is better placed and more senstive
5. The wifi capabilities are a bit better than the original DS (stronger signal; pretty impressive when neither DS can have an attena to help).
6. Power button and stylus holders were moved to the right side
7. Size constraints forced the GBA slot to be moved forward, thus GBA carts stick out of the DS Lite by about a centimeter (there's one flash cart being developed that fits perfectly into the DS Lite, obviously cannot fit into a GBA or original DS)
8. The status lights are moved onto the hinge, much easier to see when the system is closed.

There's one disadvantage, and it really depends on what you plan on doing with the system: The DS Lite components had to be squeezed together. If you want to do FlashMe on your DS Lite, be very careful to ONLY touch SL1, there's other components in the hole now that can fry your DS Lite if you aren't careful.

Am I the only one who just doesn't like the color schemes on the DS lite, then?

I very much dislike the light blue color that they have, but I love the black that's coming out in Europe...

And I really want it in the states.

The blue one is ugly, but I don't mind the others. The black is niiiiiice, I agree with Shadic there.

I hear that the black may scratch more easily, but apparently that's the same for all plasticy-shiny products that are black..

Can anybody with a fancy MP3 player confirm this? It would be my only hesitation about choosing black.

I can confirm the Black scratch issue. I had a MP3 Player that was black coated, and it scratched really easily, and was quite noticable...I bought one of the same brand/model/type that was Red (I wanted more space), and it really didn't seem to scratch that much. At least it wasn't noticable...Im thinking its an issue of noticing. If the color underneath the Black is white, yea you are going to see it when it scratches. If its Red, and it scratches, then the white wont be as noticed. Im going to get a white one. Looks sleek. I might wait until my DS finnaly gets scratched enough. I have one little scratch on the right side of my touch screen, and it's really not noticable. My friend wants to buy my DS for about 60-70, so I might do that and get a Lite. Even though I have BIG hands, I should be alright. I had problems with the GBASP with size, but I managed...

Hmm... that makes me sad, because the black Lite looks so cool. I really don't care if it gets scratched right now, but if I do want to sell it or something in the future it's not going to get me much. =\ The white is nice too, though.

About the whole scratching thing... they don't actually scratch easier, the scratches are just easier to see... kinda dumb I know... but it bugs me when people say stuff like that, like white shoes get dirty easier, you know.

As for the topic at hand, I was waiting for the DS Lite to be released to get one, but I don't know for sure if I really want one now or not, none of the games are really yelling must have to me as we speak.

Eh, personally I'd rather keep my DS. Sure, it's got a dead pixel and the microphone is in an akward place, but it's my DS. I've grown attached to it.

I'd also like to mention I kept my GBA over the GBASP.

Screw it, I've done this too many times. Just think about it for awhile.
