...And I'm SHOCKED that Mexico didn't get a single goal in... what a tough game. Lucky for Angola, though, they get to advance with a tie.

Tomorrow, USA vs. Italy.

I'm going to be glued to the television.

Argentina's attack today was out of this world, The match, however, was horribly boring, it was all decided too fast. Angola vs. Mexico was the complete oposite. Horrible attacking play, but exciting and even match. Strangely enough, right after the first half started, 6 guys from Angola walked into the pub to watch the match (). I have no idea why they were there, but it was fun, seeing as how I was rooting for Angola (tend to root for the underdog when two teams that I don't have any interest in play).

Edit: Angola won't advance with a tie, Danielle. They'll have to beat Iran to advance, in addition to Portugal beating Mexico in such a way that Angola can advance on goal difference.

Oh, and by the way, how is it that a defence consisting of mainly 2nd tier players in Portugal and a GK who is a free agent has managed to let in only 1 goal in 2 matches?

Fixed the smiley. England didn't deserve that win, seriously. Trinidad were playing much better. However, props to terry for that excellent save off the line. Oh, and Trinidad's goal SO wasn't offside

Listening to English commentators makes it like, 10 times worse

Danielle: They play THREE games. Not two.

SomerZ: Gee, let's see... all Angola had to do was play Portugal, who had the "one goal and then play safe no matter what our fans think" mentality, and Mexico who wasted a bunch of chances, with the ones that went through being stopped by the keeper. I don't think they'll advance but give them credit; they're still alive with one match left.

That second goal by Argentina... oh man. That was something.

It's 3 game elimination?

When I searched for the USA games to download, there was only one, and since then there haven't been any USA games and this one coming up tomorrow is life or death for them.

Where did I miss one?

Each team plays each other once in the group. (Example: USA plays the Czech Republic, Italy and Ghana.) You get 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. So in Group E now... Italy and the Czechs have 3 points, USA and Ghana have none. The top two teams advance.

Odds are that if USA loses tomorrow, they'll be out of the tournament since they'll have no points after two games and if Italy and the Czechs both win tomorrow, they'll have 6 each. You can't make up 6 points with one game.

so...would the US beating Italy be one of the biggest upsets in the history of the World Cup? eh...it would probably be a minor one?

I've always wondered, why 3 points for a win?

Oooh, okay, that makes sense. Thanks Colin.

I keep hearing that Italy will be "tough to beat" and that USA "better bring their best game"... so I'm assuming Italy is good and that USA is going to have to play their hearts out to stay in the running.

I'll be rooting for them

So, the Argies have to be favourites right now based on what we've seen so far.

Meanwhile, if Trinidad Tobago beat Paraguay and England beat Sweden by a combined 4 goals, T&T can actually go to the second round...

Definitely rooting for Ghana here, I almost had a heart attack with that goal. HE WAS OFFSIDES. Got the call though, so I'm breathing easier.

Wow. Looks like we just *might* have our African bolter. That was one hell of a game.

If the Yanks managed to knock off Italy sometime after I go to bed, that'd make one win apiece and make the final round matches extremely interesting.

Wow, not only was the officiating horrible, but it wasn't even consistant. If you're going to call a tight game, do it the whole way through.

Ghana were awesome and outplayed (!!!) the Czech Republic. It was an upset but a deserved one; they didn't just get a goal and lay back for 90 minutes. They played extremely well.

As for Italy/USA... the referee's going to be tossed out of the World Cup I think. He got the elbow by De Rossi right but messed up on Mastroeni and Pope's red cards. It should have been 11-10 USA, not 10-9 Italy. At least the US got their point and aren't dead yet (Italy win + USA win = perfect) but that game was strange.

Yeah, the English soccer commentators noted that via whatever system is used to determine who refs games, who gets to ref the final, etc. they're pretty sure this ref won't be going any further than this game.

NOT SO RANDOM FUN FACT: This particular referee missed the 2002 World Cup. Why? He was suspended from his regular federation for "irregularities" in his officiating.

Take that as you will.

I wouldn't call it "irregularities" today because it wasn't like he was trying to put the fix in. He was just a bad ref who got one call right but only because it happened right in front of him.

Well, two calls, if the English commentary is to be believed (His waving off the second American goal was in fact correct, evidently).

But anyway, they never did elaborate on what the "irregularities" he got suspended for actually were, so I have no idea if he's corrupt or just incompetent. Probably the latter.

EDIT: They just mentioned that the referee DID get suspended for corruption in 2002.

What would happen if we beat Ghana and the Czech Republic beat Italy? (Italy and the US would then be tied for second, but the game between them ended in a tie.)

In that case, based on goal differential, Italy goes on and the US goes home unless the US and/or Czech Republic CRUSH their respective opponents.

Bah, you can call "Mexico's attack fucked up" as much as you want, fact is that without Angola's defence, Mexico's attack woudln't have fucked up. Sure, Portugal plays like the Southern Europeans always do, but you can't blame their single one goal on that alone. Angola's defence has been ace so far, despite the fact that they all play in crappy clubs.

Ghana outplayed the Czechs, it was good.

Luigi-San: If the US were to win, and Italy were to lose, it would be decided on goal difference (total goals scored versus total goals conceeded throughout all group matches). The US's current goal difference, -3 (1-4), versus Italy's +2 (3-1), means that the US should hope that this scenario won't occur. Unless by some freak occurence the US beats Ghana 3-0 and Italy loses to the Czechs 3-0, bringing the goal differences to US 0 and Italy -1.

neotransotaku: It changed from 2 to 3 points for a win during the early nineties (Euro 92 had 2 points for a win, World Cup 94 had 3 points for a win). This was because a tie was seen as giving too many points. Two ties equaled one win, so they changed the points for a win to 3, making it so that you'd have to tie three times in order to obtain as many points as you would for winning, making ties less good. In a group with only 4 teams playing each other once, it usually doesn't matter too much, but in a league consisting of many teams playing each other two times or more, it does actually come into play quite often.
