The Aussie/Japan game was spectacular. Though I really don't follow soccer, I went through the line-up and picked the teams I'd be rooting for in the games. I was rooting for Australia, and those 3 goals in less than 10 minutes were AMAZING. I've never seen anything like that, it's not even like Japan was letting up... they were just on fire.

That game alone makes me want to follow the world cup much more than I planned to.

Did you watch it live?

(Because if you did, that game started at 6 AM Cali time... )

You may ask me any questions you want if you start following it.

neo: They're not beating Italy. MAYBE they can get a draw and stay alive, but like I said... they play like this against Italy, they're done. If I was Arena, I'd bench Donovan but you need him for the Italy game... if he gives up again when the States are down, then send him home early.

Tomorrow's action...

South Korea vs. Togo - South Korea aren't as good as they were in 2002 but this is their best chance at a win.
France vs. Switzerland - Don't count on an easy France win, Switzerland gave them problems in qualifying and have a good young team.
Brazil vs. Croatia - If Croatia come out flat, this could be an exhibition by Brazil. They're the second-last high profile team to play their first match (last is Spain).

Yeah I watched it live, school starts at 7 and we had a party today in my morning class, so we were all there even earlier to eat
So about 6:45-the end of the game we watched it.

Tomorrow I'm gonna see if I can tape the games, so that I can watch them once finals are over this week. Then hopefully this thread will still be going and you all won't hate me for posting about games a little late.

Well, as long as you can avoid spoilers until then. There's always the option of... downloading... games to watch.

OK so apaprently our crucial final group game against Croatia is scheduled for 4:30am local time. Bah! You'd think they'd try and schedule the games to accommidate the involed countries' time-zone differences.

...When Korea/Japan had the World Cup, we ALL had to suffer since the start times here were 2:30 AM/5 AM/7:30 AM. Now it's your turn.

Games here are at 9 AM, noon and 3 PM. Pretty reasonable.

I got to see the end of the Korea/Togo game this morning, that was intense. That last Korea goal wouldn't have gone in if it didn't hit the defender and completely fool the poor keeper.

Can't wait to see who wins the Brazil game.

...I'm totally getting sucked into the world cup.

2:30am would be fine, Colin. I've usually been watching the 2:30am game. But 5:00am AEST is pushing it. I'm just baffled as to why, with games starting at 11:00pm, 2:30am and 5:00am Australian time, they'd put our game that late. Croatia will get the game at a decent hour in any time-slot

Especially since the earlier game involves the US, for whom the latest possible time slot would be far better.

I'd have expected better organisation from the Germans, that's all.

Edit:
Hang on, they have to play all the 3rd group games for each group at the same time, don't they? Group F is hopelessly scattered around the globe and I guess Brazil and Japan got preferential treatment in getting a decent timeslot for those two countries (late night but not early morning Japan time, probably early afternoon Brasillian time?). Bah. Means I don't get to sleep between the Aussie game and catching a plane to Melb for a debating tournament. Hooray for SLEEP MADNESS DEBATING STYLE.

No, the Group F matches are taking place at 9 PM CET. That's 3 PM here and... not a good time for Australia OR Japan.

I can't wait for tomorrow. The Shevy is going to be out on the pitch. Let's see what a little guy who used to play on Dynamo Kyiv can do!

And now he's going to play for Chelsea this season.

I envy Chelsea.

I thought the France/Switzerland game was awful but I'm glad Switzerland got a point. Togo totally fell apart after that red card.

And OH MY GOD was Ronaldo awful today. Brazil didn't look like world champions but he was just... ugh.

Well, Croatia didn't play too hot either. If they'd have been a bit more aggressive they coulda been the upset of the games. that would've been good.

As for Chelsea...Drogba+the Shevy = get ready to be wowed. They've got a bloody clamp on the Champions League for the next while.

Tomorrow we'll see if Chelsea made a good buy.

Not if they keep choking before reaching the CL final. I can't see them choking on their route to their third straight EPL title.

Croatia played all right. They had great defense and a good goalie. They played well enough that Japan/Australia will be worried.

Germany wins on goal 91st minute I feel bad for poland, they did well, especially during that one barrage of shots that seem to find some piece of metal.
