Yeah, but he's gotta be the bigger man and just walk away from it in a situation like that. Because now look what he's done to himself, leaving the game on a horrible note like that, ruining his reputation, possibly even losing the world cup itself... it wasn't worth it.

Yeah, after that, I wouldn't blame Zidane if he gave Materazzi a Viagra Driver right there on the field. (...look it up.) Hopefully, if Zidane unretires, no one'll bring the hammer down on him, and Materazzi's looking forward to a good ol' fashioned smiting.

According to the media here in Norway, Materazzi has said that he does not know what the word terrorist means. Way to not pay attention to current media discussions over the last 5 years.

That's a line I'd expect from Totti, but Materazzi?

Put it this way; I won't be crying bloody murder if someone happens to put a forearm in the path of Materazzi's head this year.

Sure, next year. Heck, I wouldn't have cared if he headbutted him right AFTER the world cup ended. He would have been retired, and if France won, I don't think he'd be getting such bad publicity for it. He just should have shown more self control in a moment and game like that.

But that's just me. And I'm happy to say that *knocks on wood* I've never been terribly insulted in a moment that I'm under intense pressure.

This won't tarnish his career to any degree. Nor should he feel bad about it.

Zizou has stood as an excellent example of a soccer player. His accomplishments so outshine this incident that it will be relegated to a minor point in talking about his career.

His honour vs. a trophy? I wouldn't call it a pyrrhic victory. He showed the world that you can't back talk someone like that. You can't be a racist pig in the world of football. There are consequences. And that players are willing to feel the penalty to doll out justice.

GO ZIZOU!

...You know, I think that if Italy had scored after Zidane had been sent off, you could make a pretty good link between that and the loss.

Soccer's a team sport. End of story.

And the team ought to understand that and support him.

End of story.

Define "support". You have to keep your cool in a game that important and another French player got a yellow during that mess as well - the last thing you want is to be in the hole by more than one player.

I think they're showing him enough support after the fact.

Thank you Colin!

That is exactly what I've been saying to other people that try to crap on Zizou. Ribery put one just inches past the post, along with rocking one into the upper deck when he had a clear shot. Henry had plenty of time in Italy's 18.

Say Trezeguet makes his shot, and Barthez gets fingers on one of Itay's shots. Boom. Completely different storyline. Instead of disgrace, he gets respect for withholding his family's honor.

They're doing just that, Colleen.

The team and the French people are standing behind the choice of their captain. Even if disappointed.

edit:: this is what is being called by my Italian friends as the "Canadian hockey fight mentality". I stand by it.

And now FIFA wants to take the Golden Ball from him... I don't think they should try and do that, he was voted it and giving the award to Cannavaro won't change anything about what happened.

I have no respect for Blatter. Stripping Zidane of the Golden Ball would mean negative amounts of respect.

He was voted the winner, end of story regardless of what you think of the whole mess.

I say Beckenbauer ain't aiming high enough when he goes for president of UEFA. I say Beckenbauer should throw out Sepp.

I liked how he admitted to diving when he was playing Swiss amateur football.

Then again, he did give Canada the 2007 U-20 World Cup. So 1% of me tolerates him and 99% of me hates him.

Well look at it this way. Unless Materazzi says what he claims he says, we need to take Zidane's word for it.

Also, by Materazzi not saying what it was, it, at least to me, suggests that it was something obscene and vulgar, and he'd much rather just parry with Zidane, rather than coming out with it.

Speaking of 2007.

I've already started thinking about buying tickets

I'm so going, mostly because I live near one of the venues.
