Just hope that they don't wet the bed against Serbia (& Montenegro) tomorrow and you might be OK. Then again, the Ivory Coast is going to give them a tough ride...

Rooting for: I don't know if you'd call it "rooting for them" per se, but my philosophy as it pertains to World Cup is "When in doubt, pick Brazil". So there you go.

General thoughts: Watching it in Spanish is, quite honestly, more interesting to me than watching it in English. Not because I understand Spanish per se--I don't--but because this being soccer, which I don't watch very often, ANY commentary may as well be in a foreign language, and with Spanish, I at least get the pleasure of hearing "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!" (Or "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL, GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOAL!", or today's "GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL, GOOOOOOOOAL!") whenever someone scores. That invariably brightens my day.

...Andres Cantor doing the games?

Apparently the commentary on ABC today was pretty bad, compared to ours (using British announcers) and most other commentary teams on the planet.

Oh, I thought he meant it ironic in how Budweiser isn't called that in Germany.

THAT'S his name, thanks! I actually read an interview with him in English sometime recently, though I forget where. I think it was my local paper or something. But anyway, yeah, Andres Cantor doing the games. Good stuff.

EDIT: Reading now, I'm not actually sure if it was Cantor or just someone similarly enthusiastic. Oh well.

Whoever the Uni guy is, he likes saying GOOOOOOOOAL several times based on some highlights I downloaded.

(I've downloaded every goal so far in addition to watching the games. Yeah. )

Socceroos open their campaign tonight against Japan. Winnable, but very tough and we have a poor record against Japan.

Tonight your time, early morning (9 AM) my time - and I'll probably be up for the second half at the worst.

I know that the Aussies are really feeling positive about the Socceroos, so best of luck.

I'm in it for Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Mexico, the US, Brazil, South Korea, and Spain, for each of groups A through H respectively. I love Germany's keepers; I'm pulling for an underdog in T&T (though their chances are slim); I'm a huge fan of the Latin American style of soccer as opposed to its European counterpart, which accounts for Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil; I'm a fan of America, of course; and South Korea and Spain are essentially arbitrary choices.

Just to comment, has anyone witnessed some of the glorious saves that have been made in just the first two days of competition? Angola's keeper pulled out a few good ones, but there was also a beautiful touch by the one from...Trinidad? I don't even remember which nation it was, to be honest.

The Czechs better win! The Poles and the Serbs have been big let downs for the rest of us Slavs so far.

Good luck to the Socceroos, and here is hopes for Ghana doing some damage to the Italians!

Yeah, like I said, he's similarly enthusiastic. And I was annoyed when early yesterday afternoon someone scored a goal...and our satellite promptly started going in and out. What the hell is that? Stupid DISH Network.

Oh well.

Aussie Aussie Aussie! OI OI OI!

I mean, Australia probably deserved better than a one-goal loss to Japan, which looked like what would happen... until CAHILL scored two and Aloisi added a goal to pad the stats. They're not dead yet!

"No other team has scored three goals in the last seven minutes in World Cup history."

I think that about sums it up. Just got through wandering around downtown Sydney singing and chanting and yelling as everyone ran around going nuts and people in cars honked horns and stuff.

*runs around singing "3-1, 3-1, 3-1" and "Olé olé olé oléee, Aussie, Aussie" to the tune of that Brazillian "Olé" chant song thing*

Good old Australia. Mind you, Canada's not even in the cup and I've already gotten into many a heated argument on the street about WC. Which surprises me, because I live in shitsville. At least wearing a Germany jersey shows who I'm for.

The Czechs pwn though.

Finally, my internet connection is back up.

Well, the student pub shows every single match on a big screen, so I'm pretty much there from 15:00 to 23:00 every day.

Well, as I said in the previous thread, it's gonna be Germany. Sorry if I confused anyone by saying everyone knows they're going to win. I know Brazil is the big favorite, the "everyone"-part was basically me trying to be arrogant, which I think is important to be when you talk about football. Also, as I said about the US being 8-12 years away from making a realistic challenge, well, the Czechs kinda proved that, didn't they?

Australia, which is another team I like, impressed me a lot today. Here's to hoping they manage to get a draw against the Croats and go through to the second round on goal difference (which I see as their most realistic chance of going through to the second round. Japan should be toast against Croatia and Brazil, and Brazil should get 9 points in this group).

England played crap against Paraguay, keep it up and my dream Germany vs. England final will disappear. Ok, admitedly, Germany's defence was lacklustre against Costa Rica, but the offence was fantastic. Thorsten Frings for the win.

Anyways, everything is going great so far, and I'm having the time of my life. For a person who basically lives and breathes football, the World Cup is extraordinary.

Then go to Casa, SomerZ! Comment!

No way it's Germany. I'm pretty sure Brazil will be the team that's the most impressive through the first set of matches, but so far... geez, I dunno. I guess Argentina/Netherlands/Czech Republic would be the most impressive, but it's early days.

*copies/pastes from blog*

"They were outclassed today, plain and simple. They tried to make a game of it in the first half but totally lost the plot in the second half, and as a result they’re probably heading out of the tournament. If they play like this against Italy, they’re finished. It’ll be interesting to see how Landon Donovan does the rest of the way given the fact he mailed it in during the second half and coach Bruce Arena blasted him for doing so."

They soiled the sheets, basically.

I saw the score 2-0 for the U.S. game and basically believed, they are done for. They need to win against Italy now to have a shot of making it out. I don't a tie against italy and win against ghana will be enough to make it out. However, if they don't win a single game, they will not make it out.
