I dunno if this should be in general chat or here. But if I put this thread in the wrong place, forgive me. Ok, let's get back on track; my question is for people in college and college graduates, are you guys still "editing" roms? The reason why I ask this is that I told on of my friends I "edit" roms for fun and I want to be a video game programmer, he told me that I should stop creating fangames and hacks and start what I want to really work on during and after college (game programming.) So, should I stop hacking roms and creatinf fangames? Any suggestions?

There's no reason you can't still hack games and create original games at the same time. That's just silly.

My god dude, just do what you feel like doing. Don't let anybody tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing. As long as its legal wherever you live, do it. If you want to make hacks of 20+ year old console video games, do exactly that. If you want to learn a "real" programming language and make apps for businesses, do that too.

This romhacking scene has no deadlines, no money involved, no contracts...its all FOR FUN. If you find you aren't having any fun playing or making games, then move on to something else. If you enjoy playing and making hacks, then it doesn't matter what job you have, what age you are, or what IQ level you posses. Make those Super Mario Bros hard hacks, go for your Final Fantasy + hack, finish up that old Castlevania project, whatever you do, just have fun man.

I love hacking roms. I am also programming illeterate, 26, and no interest in going into video game creation for a living. It's a hobby. Nothing beats the thrill of messing with game data you know has only been seen by the programmers. It was through that I discovered the unfinished Crocomire sprite in Metroid Zero Mission.

Why should you not still hack roms? Oftentimes, the best way to understand what you SHOULD do and HOW is by looking at something that did it well beforehand. For instance, if you wanted to get into platformers, it would be a good idea to look at how the Mario series does things, just to get an idea of how things work.

If nothing else, looking at the original games is fun.

Indeed...

I'm 20 (well just about 21) and I still do this crap. It's a hobby, and you should have one. It helps take the edge off of life. I mean I can't Rom Hack all the time because of college, but whenever I get some free time I try to start up a project. Maybe even finish one sometimes.

I have to think if someone was interviewing me for a job as a programmer or game designer, and I brought in a game console with a really nice ROM hack I'd made, they'd be pretty impressed. I personally consider ROM hacking and making games from scratch to be two very different things, so doing both at the same time isn't unreasonable. The hack is just another demonstration of your skills. (And if the person doing the interview doesn't know that there's a ridiculously easy to use editor, even better. )

i started out rom hacking but i reached a certain point where the skills i had could only go so far. so then i decided to learn how to develop for the NES. the thing about hacking is that you learn the styles of programming that the professionals used on each particular console, and in turn helps you if you ever want to make a homebrew game for it.

though any console dev is gonna be a long, tedious path. rom hacking gives you the skeleton of the game, so the process is bit faster. they both have pros and cons, do what you enjoy better.
