I was thinking that would it be possible to make a javascript so if a topic older than 2 weeks gets replied, it'd alert you asking "This topic is older than 2 weeks. Are you sure you want to proceed?"

Meh, it might help some people that don't read the date of the last post in the thread.

n00bs will probably still bump threads anyway without reading the reminder.

My guess is that nobody would read it if they're unintelligent enough to be posting in 2 week old threads.
I think Xk has another idea to moderate bumping, we'll see if it goes into effect or not.

I have an idea too, ban everyone

yeah. It really sounds like a waste in theory, but there are alot of stupid people here who go to the secodn page just to post "zomg kewl" so it might not be bad.

Is "common sense" a mystery to people?

Like I said, I'd totally dig a bar with spikes, skulls, and blood on it that says "Bump below this line and we will burn your grave and destroy your shoes!!!"

I wouldn't say it's just the internet. I'm sure it won't take long to find some examples of real-world lack of common sense as well.... (but I can't be bothered looking)

I guess I lack common sense, because I've never understood this rule on forums. What difference does it make when the last reply was? If you have something to add to a topic, why not add it?

I have a job and a life, and sometimes I'll go quite a while without visting this site, and when I do, threads that weren't there last time may be halfway down the page. Why shouldn't I reply to them?

I really don't care how old a thread is, and I don't see how the age of a thread has anything to do with whether or not something can be added to it. This seem to me to be one of those rules people make and enforce just so they have rules to make and enforce.

If something is added - not a short one-liner post, but something with some actual content - then we allow it, which is one of the reasons we don't automatically close old threads.

People can add pointless one liners to any thread. Age has nothing to do with it.

The real problem tends to occur when users go back a few pages and bring back threads months old (and pages back in the history), for replies such as "lol".

Personally I think once something slipped down to the second page, it's best left alone, and a new thread started instead if there's real discussion to be made.

I don't really care much about age if it's on the first page of a forum, provided that real content is added. However, bumping something up from the second or sixty-fourth page only creates confusion.

Once upon a time when Acmlm's was more active I would have gone beyond "second page" in that too, but I don't think we're that active anymore.... threads on the second page and beyond have usually died a nice peaceful death.

Yes, but if people add pointless one liners to a more recent thread, it's not as though they're bumping things that might be completely irrelevant, and actual discussion hadn't died off yet.
