I was poking around on a website that I occasionally read, and I stumbled across an interesting article.

Here it is, for your reading pleasure. (Warning: Some of the website's content is a little controversial. Not NSFW or anything like that, but stories not for those who are overly sensitive.

Are you done reading it yet? Good, let's get started.

I am a musician. I play a few instruments, and I know how to write music properly for a several-instrument ensemble. Although my art is in a different form than this man's art, we share something in common; the internet and the invention of computers has impacted our art.

I got my first guitar almost five years ago, but for the first two years I never really played it. It was something I had gotten on a whim. If it weren't for the internet, it would still be sitting in my closet, collecting dust. But three years ago, that totally changed. On someone's suggestion, I went online and checked out an album called Master of Puppets, by Metallica. It blew my mind. It was electric. I decided that I wanted to be just like Kirk Hammet, and so out came the guitar again, and I plodded away day after day until I could finally play some songs. He was not the first guitar hero I would find over the internet; Next was Dave Mustaine, then John Petrucci...

Today, the internet is my publishing ground. Since heavy metal, my genre, doesn't sell to the majority of people (the "mainstream" audience), I can't find a lot of local people who would be interested in it. How many people would pay money for a CD by an unknown musician in an unpopular genre? I would either have to change my music, or not have an audience for it. The internet gives me leverage. People from everywhere can easily find new MP3s on the internet, and the artist can give them a sample of the music with no initial investment by the listener. That is what lets me spread my music. Forget wether I would be as good of an artist if it weren't for the internet; Honestly, I would not be an artist at all if it weren't for the internet. I consider my musical taste and what I do with a guitar to be one of my defining characteristics. I would be a completely different person if not for the internet.

I'm going to suggest two topics for this thread, either of which (or both) you may persue:

1. Discuss how the internet has (or has not) changed people's lives, wether it be in art, in social life, in personal life, ect... Feel free to agree or disagree with the article I linked earlier.

2. Share your personal experiences with the internet and how it has changed your life. We are all here on the internet, on a ROM hacking board, a topic that likely would not even exist without the internet. Even if you are not here for hacking... If the internet brought you here, it has likely brought you other places as well.

(Mods... I know this could fit in a few forms. General Chat seems the best fit for it, but if you think it belongs elsewhere, so be it.)

Free porn /o/. Although seriously, free, easy-to-find information has made stuff easier for me in a lot of ways. Easy = Good.

Tucker Max is a fucking slut!
No matter how many articles I read by him, they always seem to come back to having sex with women who are already in a relationship.

This one was no different.
As soon as I read the part about him almost getting with a married 40 year-old with children, I almost threw up, and instantly closed the page.

This guy seriously pisses me off!
If ever I see this guy, I'll shoot him in his knee caps, his penis and balls...every place that'd be as painful as possible without killing him, then kill his family.
And YES, I'd pull down his pants to get a clear shot of his infected penis!

It's people like this who make me lose faith in humanity.

Imagine if this guy fucked your girlfriend/wife?

I don't care what the original topic was... The fact that you linked to this guy is pathetic.

omfg. I agree completly on what you, wite, said.

As for it has done for me....

One day, I've heard the album "S&M" by Metallica. Downloaded all the albums, I was like "Metallica is the best band ever \m/". Then a certain Xeogred told me about a band called Edguy. This completly changed my life. The way I see music, what I listen to, it changed everything. I became friends with some people because of it. Seriously, the internet has done alot for me.

Now, I haven't read the article you've linked too, but I definitly will.

The internet hasn't changed me too much, aside from the people I've met.

One in particular, though there are a handful of folks who I genuinly enjoy talking to.
But meeting a whydee via the interweb has really changed my life for the better.
So yay internetz. <3

Okay. Sorry for the little outburst back there. Had been drinking, so meh.
I still don't approve of his casual sexual escapades.

What the interweb has done for me

Well, my speeling and! grammer!have improved incredibly! ...Yes, that was all on purpose.

I hated school, so I never really caught on to many of the important things they taught in English.
A couple of months of mimmicking the 'smart ones' in a chat room quickly fixed my problems.
I would kinda like to go back to school and see how well I go now.

I deleted my last post, you can choose to keep or delete yours. If you keep it, we tricked DarkSlaya into agreeing with you, which can be a plus. I didn't exactly respond well or maturely to it, I was just a little pissed that someone was trying to call me out for starting a discussion is all. You can feel how you want about him, I'm not gonna try and change your mind.

Ah! You didn't have to resort to deleting your post, man!
I in no way hate you for posting your thoughts on my opinion.

You should always expect a couple of forumers to stray a little off-topic in threads. It's always been that way.

My opinions on this guy will never change. I'm extremely dissapointed that this guy is regarded as 'popular'.

Even if it was the women who 'hit' on him, he should still show some sort of decentcy, and refuse (and maybe bitch-slap) the whore who comes onto him.

ANYWAY!
My two cents.

I think that, maybe, if it wasn't for the internet, I wouldn't have maintained (and possibly increased) my interest in meteorology so well. The plan is to begin studying meteorology at university this fall.

Also, the internet has been an important factor in changing my taste in music. But also the fact that some of the people I worked with are metalheads.

Just keeping it on topic... Plus I've been on the other side of the "wrote something while I was drunk" before and wished I could take it back

The internet has provided me with unimaginable amounts of fun and gaming opportunities. I have also learned much from reading different news articles, biographies, and Wikipedia articles on varying topics.

It has also changed my life in the respect that I have learned that it can also bring out the worst in people. Anger, frustration, revenge, personal attacks, and power issues have the ability to dominate one's "Cyber Personna". Some of these things are not respectable, and not acceptable within our real life society, but because of the barriers between people that have been broken, and barriers set in place by Internet Anonymity, those traits have an opportunity to show without really affecting these people's very real lives.

It is useful for portraying important messages, such as Savetheinternet.com or Amnesty International, which deal with issues that affect our everyday lives in the real world.

In conclusion, the internet has had a neutral impact on me. Like everything in this world, it has the power for good, and for bad.

Yeah, it got cut off for some reason...Anyway, I put Amnesty International there at the end, and described how the internet is like everything else in this world in regards to it being put to good use and bad.

But yeah, I agree with the bottom part of your post

First off, Rom Maniac, when you did the a href=whatever to the link that isn't showing up, you opened the quotes and forgot to close them, which is why the rest of your post got cut off AND that's why the board is being fucked up by your broken HTML. If you (or a mod) reads this, could you fix it for me? Pretty please?

Anyways,

How has the internet changed my life? You're going to think this is really stupid but, I've met some of my closest friends online. The sad thing is, I'm significantly closer with my online friends (we even talk "offline" on the phone, a lot of times) than with my "real" friends. I can't tell my "real" friends much of anything personal, and its like they hardly even know me. They're just there to make the school year suck less, it would seem some times. But my online friends...some of these guys I just don't know what I'd do with out. I've known some as long as 5 years and some as few as a couple of months. They're all pretty special to me, and as lame as it makes me sound, that's how it is.

As if I wasn't sounding bad enough, I can honestly say the internet is what brought me to the love of my life. I met a girl, who I became very close with. After talking on the phone constantly, exchanging snailmail letters, sending valentines gifts, the whole jazz, I really truly felt that I loved this girl with all my heart. I was even saving up to go see her this Christmas and, as foolish as it sounds, putting a little extra money asside to one day, in the future (after college etc) purchase a ring and maybe even pop her the big question. Of course, she like me is very close with all her internet friends, so its no wonder one of her ex's was an online guy. Long story short,, I had my heart shat on and handed to me by her as she left me for him, leaving as no more than "some online friend" at this point. If it wasn't for the internet, I don't think I could say I'd know what love is to me. If it wasn't for the internet I probably wouldn't have known at this pointin my life what it feels like to have your heart truly broken (I'm saying this because I don't see myself getting very serious with a lot of the girls around here...) and it makes me sound foolish, lame and stupid for saying so, but if it wasn't for the internet I wouldn't have met the love of my life. I still care about her a great deal and probably always will. Go figure =|
