Black black black black black...

Short'n'black... Spikey top, short stubby spikes... like triangles across the top of my head. Usually when my hair is longer, it's striaght in the back and curly as hell in the front. I have screwed up hair.

Not all of my crap is expensive. I'm fond of VO5 Free Me Freesia conditioner. Its main conditioning ingredients work well on my hair, it doesn't contain anything that tends to build up, and it's CHEAP. (As in less than $1 for a 22.5 ounce bottle.) Beauty Without Cruelty herbal shampoo probably falls under the category of expensive crap, but it takes me so long to go through that it really doesn't add up. I bought a 16 ounce bottle in mid-April for $5-6 or so, and it's at least 2/3 full.

VO5? "build up"? You might as well be speaking in tongues. You expect me to know the difference between shampoo and conditioner?

I have a very hard to define haircolor, something along the lines of brown with a gold overlay (oooh, photoshop terms :O)
I get headaches when my hair grows long, so it's usually at shoulderlength and extremely thinned out and layered. I currently have asymetric bangs and I'm loving it
I, uh, use shampoo and conditioner cause I gots too much hair to just stick to shampoo :3
I prefer having my hair loose because of its weigth, though I do throw it in a ponytail when I'm cooking/dishing/cleaning.

WHAT THE FUCK IS CONDITIONING? Seriously, this whole concept is foreign to me. I understand it makes the hair "nice," and girly girls use it, but this is the best I can describe it.

Billy Madison says that it's shampoo and then conditioner, but my bottle says "Shampoo + Conditioner." I am lost on this topic. Let me live in my little sheltered world of shampoo.

Conditioner makes your hair soft and manageable. Think Kevin Nash, only you won't tear your quad walking.

Okay wite, so your product is both shampoo and conditioner. But most come in separate bottles, and you use them one at a time. Shampoo first to clean it and whatnot, and conditioner last to make it soft and untangled and help you with the desired look you want.
Conditioner isn't required, but it does make your hair feel softer.

I used to have decently long rock n roll hair when I was singing for my last band. I had always wanted it so I started growing it out near the end of high school (I got bitched at for it violating dress code my entire senior year.) I've had receding hair since high school too. I'm lucky though in that my hair looks good long, mid, short, slicked back, red, electric blue... messed up... and now gone. I got bold and clipped it short earlier this year. ...Well okay that's bullshit. I chickened out and asked my little bro's fiancee to "fuck it up real bad" (yeah that's obscene and in poor grammar, but no other phrase would do it justice.) After that I had to buzz it to fix it and I like it a lot. I'd hate it if I didn't have a stache/goatee but I've had one of those since I got a decent amount of hair on my face. I'd go into why but that's a totally different story and you don't wanna hear about it.

anyway, I buzz my trimmers over my head every third day on the shortest setting. Shaved would be bleh but the stubbly look is good on me.

Still... some days I miss my long hair with the flippy wave at shoulders.

My kind of hair style mine is medium/long cut, black. I also use hair gel to style two small locks of hair between my eyes, and also have dyed a shade of dark blue. Always had that hair style since I left high school, still have it today.

I'm considering getting my hair layered so that it looks nicer down... but I'm afraid. I've never done anything special with my hair, and I'm not sure what I'd do if it turned out I didn't like it. Any advice, gals (or guys with gal friends who know what I'm talking about)?

since you are out of school...now is a good time because only your co-workers would probably know. That's probably the best advice is to do it when you are rarely seen. This is what my best friend did when she got her moles removed from her face a few years back. She did it during winter break, where she rarely saw people

It's not so much that... I can just put it up in a ponytail if it does look like crap... my bigger concern is how to get it cut. I've... never gotten my hair cut in any special way before... I'm a simple girl when it comes to how I look... but I can't stand this heat and the thickness of my hair anymore.
I just have no clue what to do with it, and I don't want to give that much trust to some barber I've never met.

Hmm... dunno how I can help with this dillema. But I wouldn't trust a barber with how you want your hair cut. When I was a kid, went to this barber shop, he wasn't paying much attention and cut a huge gash of hair off my head.

Talked to Krist... she doesn't know much since she has short tomboyish hair...

Hmm, all I can say is go and see any of your trustworthy friends, and ask, or cut your hair by trial and error (though that would be your last option if all else fails). Though, that's all I can think of while being half asleep. Hope I did help you some bit.

Yeah... I'm just gonna go for it. If it looks bad, I'll wear it up and wait for it to grow out. GOTTA TAKE RISKS SOMETIMES.

We'll see, but thanks for the advice.

You don't have someone who has always cut your hair for years? Yeah, I'd be nervous too. My stylist cut my hair for most of my life. I know and trust him well, even to the point that I'm upset that I buzz my own hair now because now I don't go sit in his chair and have a conversation and say "whatever, I trust you" when he asks how I want it cut.

When you get it cut (and don't go to someone who calls him or herself a barber, see a stylist =P) if it comes out well then keep going back. If you're not satisfied, never go back. Someone who is good at it will never butcher you unless it's your fault, and even then they'll try pretty hard to talk you out of it.

I guess you're about to take a leap of faith. Good luck!

Nope... I just go wherever when I need a haircut, because I always kept a very simple cut that anyone could do in 10 minutes tops.
I'll just have to pick a place and hope for the best. And I'll be sure to avoid a barbershop, thanks for the advice.
