After finding out that the CPS-2 romsets you use in MAME are pre-decrypted, and after byteswapping all the roms, I found the following nice stuff in rom #3, offset 0x11113....

CHARCTER TEST MODE
NAGE EDIT MODE
TBL3:  ??/
l?L-R:COLOR CHANGE
l?L-RIR CHANGE
l?L-R:X MOVE
h?U-D:Y MOVE
h?U-DAT CHANGE
h?U-D:CHAR CHANGE

Okay. Could be just a viewer. But shortly after that, there's stuff like "Efct", "Prio", "S.E.", "RngX"... and after that, a Pattern Edit mode. Any takers?

sounds like the tileview mode that can be accessed through the test menu on many cps 1 and 2 games to me.

i dont recall if you can select that mode in sfa3, but its basically just a way to check all the tiles and palettes of the game.

i believe the test menu hasnt fundamentally changed much since the first cps1 games, and is reused in every title on the platform.

I'd love to prove you wrong. The text shards I saw strongly suggest an editor.

In fact, I'm going to load up SFA3 now and see what the test menu contains, for I remember only seeing a tile viewer in the first few CPS-2 games, like the first Darkstalkers (the one with the silent attract mode) and SSF2.

Edit: input, output, sound & voice, color, dot cross hatch, game data, configuration, memory check, exit. Game data counts the amount of plays.

Edit 2: SFA1 - Warriors' Dream has the same menu, but with a different font.
SF2 (CPS1) has color, dip switch, IO test, dot cloth, character. Character is what you seem to mean.
SSF2 (CPS2) has input, output, system configuration, memory test, sound & voice, color, dot cross hatch, character.

Edit 3: Darkstalkers has input, output, sound & voice, color, dot cross hatch, system configuration, object, scroll 1, scroll 2, scroll 3, memory check.

Edit 4: Night Warriors - Darkstalkers' Revenge has input, output, sound & voice, color, dot cross hatch, game data, configuration, memory check.

Your turn, Devious.

Just for clarification, usually, CPS-2 games have an option to turn on sound during attrack mode.

Btw, Kawa, by the strings you found, it could well be an "animation viewer", like those usually found in NEO-GEO games (think "King of Fighters", or "SVC Chaos""). By turning on some development options in the dip switches (those vary rom game to game), you can see some pretty cool stuff.
