Are you gonna have to make up the last few months of 10th grade before moving on to 11th? Cuz... that would suck.

...That is AWESOME

Has it settled out yet, though? Is school gonna start at the right time, or could summer potentially last all year?

If it goes on too long, you have to somewhat worry about what you'd be missing. Technically dropping out of school because the system failed would NOT help anyone with life, I'd think.

Well, once it goes get back together, I'd opt to retake what I missed. But if it's just a month or two like this case, I wouldn't really care.

...So would advancing someone by a grade without properly testing them. (Whether you'd have the marks to go up or not.)

That definitely depends on the individual and the circumstances. In a situation like Cirvante seems to be describing, a lot of the facilities for any method of continuing education would probably be strained at best, especially with such an arbitrary timing.

How did you continue from that point? I'm pretty sure I remember you mentioning you're in a community college now, but did you get a GED or what? Just curious.

high school bores me even more than earlier school. I keep getting advanced in grades, but the teachers all suck. I decide it's stupid, so I drop out and hire a tutor. I eventually get my GED and start taking classes at a community college. Actually learning things in class is a refreshing break from going to class and having people state the blindingly obvious in front of you for hours.

Ahh... Okay, cool. I actually knew someone who dropped out in 10th grade to pursue his GED to try to get into college early, but I never heard anything from him after that.

I personally went through the standard 4 years high school. A lot of the normal classes were kinda stupid, but... there were a few major worthwhile ones, too. Actually wound up starting college with almost a full year's worth of credit, which is rather nice.

Either way, (insert the obvious statement about differences in situation between one who chooses that path and one who is forced into it).

Here in PR we advance based on our grades, not on finals. They aren't exactly mandatory here, so even if schools HADN'T closed, we'd probably take two finals, at the most.

And yes, I definitely have the marks to go up.

Oh, and Skreename: This won't result in a technical dropout, since the budget mishap is now over (Or so they say...)

You pass grade levels based on class grades here, too. But the finals, typically, are a large part of your grade, and therefore determine whether or not you pass to a small degree.

And in some cases (but not all), you HAVE to pass your final to get a passing grade. I've never had a course like that but some require that.

Heh. Not here. _¬

I know some guys who BOMBED on their finals a few years ago and still passed with a B or C.

Like I said, finals aren't mandatory in PR.

I'd actually hate to take a class in which the final exam is worth 40% of the grade or something... makes the rest of the class requirements seem rather worthless.

Back in high school, exam exemptions were lovely. Get a certain grade, miss at most a certain number of days, and you don't have to take the final. Was nice.

Of course, in college it depends on the professor. I've had ones that'll average test grades and use them for the final, use the final as a test grade, have the final replace MULTIPLE test grades (while still being the final)... Yeah.

Usually, the finals here average out to about 7-8% of the final grade.
But some teachers just go overboard, like my math teacher.... 15% of your final grade is the final. NOT COOL. Now I really really really have to study.

You worry too much, Dani.

I almost never study and still manage to score 95+% on all my tests.

Depending on your grades, if you don't score well on your math final, it's not like you'll fail the class and have to take summer school... Right?

@Skreename: We have those too, here. Almost every teacher has some form of final exceptions.

Not my biology teacher though. She is evil. She makes Satan cry for mercy.

Finals here count as 1/2 of a quarter grade...

Thats 1/9th of the entire grade for the year riding on one exam

Last I checked, Katwah, 1/2 of 1/4= 1/8, not 1/9.

MATHPWNED

Wow... 12.5% of the grade rides on your final? Scary....
