I don't talk to them long! It's just that I'm not evil enough to interrupt the opening spiel. And then if they try to convince me I just say "No, it's all right" instead of hanging up on them.

...sometimes if you hang up on them, they call back ASAP.

You have some rather insane telemarketers, then. Mine typically just kinda ask if I want a credit card (or a mortgage, one or the other), which takes all of not very long, after which I just have to take on a forceful "No. Not interested." Thankfully, I only have to deal with them up at school.

I say "Hello?" and then they start monologuing and I do the thing where I hang up without it making any noise on the other end.

Yeah, we're on the Do Not Call list. But before that, we'd pick up and wait for them to say something, then hang up. Dunno why. If it's a machine, we just hung up.

What I do is so much cooler than just hanging up, though.

That is amusing.

Sadly, I'm one of those people who sit and listen and then when they are finished and believe that I am interested I crush their hopes and fake a death right there.

You won't imagine how many times my dad has had a heart attack and 'died' while they have called.

I either hang up on them, tell them that whoever they're asking for is dead (only the ones that call back so many times I recognize the damn number), or just ignore the number if it's 1-800.

Most the time I'm just very very rude.

Although there was one weird one where a lady with a strong accent asked me in a sing-song voice "Is your mummy or daddy there?"

Then I was exceedingly rude.

The government should do something about this.

It's supposedly illegal for telemarketers to call someone on the DNC list, but the suits don't do jack shit to stop them.

I'm guessing the bribes work well.

What the fuck?

She must've been on something. Possibly crack.

Or she thought you were a little child or something.

Yeah, I'd have been rude too, Tarale, if I were you. I mean wtf. Who would by anything from someone that condescends you before even offering the product?

Now imagine if that saleslady actually spoke to her parents.

Total WTF-ness.

Let's just say I wouldn't want to be in her shoes if that happened...

Well, I think for some reason they must have thought that I was a child. I remember the conversation going a little like this...

Her: Can I speak to your mummy or daddy?
Me (highly annoyed): No.
Her (confused): Why not?
Me: Because I don't live with them.
Her (still thinking I'm a child): Uh... why...?
Me: I haven't lived with them for at least the past 7 years. I'm 25 years old, and highly offended, goodbye.

I don't think they ever called back.

What does your voice sound like? If it's a bit higher-pitched, I suppose it could be confused with a child's. It's still rude, but... yeah. I don't consider telemarketers to be particularly at the peak of politeness, one way or the other.

High-pitched isn't necessarily the quality I associate with a child's voice.

I'm not sure how my voice is... it's medium, I guess.

I know my brother used to get called "ma'am" whenever he tried to call the toy store.
