| I've been putting together a site for my brother using a premade CSS layout which I took (The site is BlueRobot, they let you~ <3) and adapted to something useful, and with XHTML. Well, it started out as the most rough and ready HTML ever, and gradually I worked it up towards XHTML 1.0 Strict, as I learnt how. It's not a very complicated site, but I've learnt a lot from it in terms of XHTML and CSS. That said, I don't feel at all confident with CSS, and I definitely want practice with both of them.
I've also recently started learning PHP(and some SQL through PHP), and I've been working through the PHP manual thing, trying to apply what I've learnt to a simple script (Post form, user gives Language and Name, and then depending on if the language they specify is listed in the switch block, then they'll get a greeting in that language or it'll default to English.) I've then tried to get it to record those values into a database,but i've not quite tested it yet. Will do tomorrow. Anyway, I've been struggling to decide what to do next, because I don't know what sort of things I can get done with beginner's knowledge and a manual. I don't want to bite of more than I can chew, and I was wondering if anyone could give suggestions as to what might be possible as an exercise I could do, as a fairly beginnerish beginner who can find out things from the manuals and websites etc... which might include PHP, XHTML, CSS, and possibly databases, but I'm not too bothered at the moment about that. | So you're asking, how to get bettter at php, css, and xhtml...
Well first of all, CSS is just styling, and XHTML is just a mark up language, meaning no 'real' programming knowledge is really required, just keep doing more things with them and you'll get used to it. As for php... I'd suggest doing the same, think of some projects you want to start, ask anybody if they'd like something done, work on it, use the great documentation at php.net, and learn away... Same goes for about anything else you want to learn I guess... As for what to do, maybe do news system, a tagging system, etc. Those should be rather simple projects for a starter. I remember I used to use scripts from hotscripts a long time ago to get what I wanted, but the problem was I could never get what I wanted, and thus why I moved on to writing my own stuff. |

| Try imitating someone else's layout, preferably a horribly tabular layout, so you can't cheat. Having a refrence at hand, like this: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_reference.asp helps a lot. | |||
