It's not really one of those questions meant to be answered just to provoke thought

Aside from the horrible grammar and the badly titles thread and the horrible timing, this thread could have a point. I have thought about this too, but on the other hand, I'm sure Nintendo has too. This is how I think its going to happen. You will not be able to play hacks or put your on roms on the Wii at first. They will make it so you cant. Then eventually, some clever someone will come up with a program to convert hacked games and such in to Wii format games for the VC.

There's no reason they have to use the original legacy ROM headers they used before, and there is absolutely no reason why they would use the iNES format, the Dr. V64 format, and any of those crap with dumper headers. Also, just the entire way it's emulated could be completely different, mapper mappings, etc, or even storage of rom banks/disks (see the multibanked famicom mini games for GBA).

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but you'll have to wait till someone reverse engineers that format, and until we're ensured it will even be compatible.

And even then, the Wii's 24Connect stuff means that Nintendo could patch any holes that allow for unsigned roms at any time they want. Even while you sleep...

It goes like this. The thing connects to the internet to download the games. You dont do it through your PC...

So, basically, someone will hopefully figure out a way to find the port it uses, figure out what activates the transfer, and figure out how it is stored on the Wii.

This all will most likely take awhile to figure out though, because reverse engineering a system isn't the easiest thing to do...

EDIT: Actually, a possible theory is,
1. Go download a game
2. Right when it starts downloading, use a program(Obviously made by someone for this) to intercept the transfer and give it a different source to download from.
3. Enjoy your hack!

Thats the only other way I can think of it. And I can't remember if the Wii has a Hard Drive or not, and Im too lazy to look it up. If it does, one could prolly plug it into a SCSI bus(IF it uses SCSI) in their PC and put ROMs in manually(If the hard drive is not encrypted)...

Coincidentally enough, I'm doing essentially that with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Details in this thread.

I have a network passthrough running that logs all incoming and outgoing data, and I intend to make a spoof server module. I see no reason why the exact same thing can't be done to spoof Virtual Console stuffs.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that in order to make the network passthrough work, I built a Linux system that redirects all TCP traffic to my other computer... to do the logging. All of this is possible and quite easy to do.

How about Nintendo just allow the free download of any non-re-released roms, and have a professional NES emulator you can buy for your Wii?

That reminds me, would you guys pay money if you could buy a NES and SNES attachment that perfectly emulates the games, even down to the music? Imagine, you buy the Wii, then you buy a NES attachment for like $30, and it lets you play NES roms. Perhaps a limit could be imposed to like 5 roms on there at a time, so you'd have to pick and choose what you want on there and not have like 1000 + roms to go back and forth. They could also code it so select games would work, or even differently, for the major game companies, you buy a $5 license per company to run games like Metroid, Megaman, and stuff like that. It would be programmed in such a way that it looks for specific spots in the rom(like an ASM routine) to determine if it's runable. Of course hacking the game could remove this, but most people don't hack roms or know how to. Even then, only an advanced rom hacker could alter the code to make it work.

Or, maybe they can allow roms and just make the Wii cost an extra $100 bucks.

Don't forget DRM. Nintendo's making it so that will you can pay to download 'virtual console' games and save them to removable storage devices, you can't ply than on consoles other than the one they were downloaded with.

Jigglysaint's idea (the first part, not the second) sounds nice, but not very likely. Much more profitable to charge a few bucks per game and just kinda rake it in from all the random people who want a few games, even if it's not very kind for the ones who want huge collections.

Apophis: That's to keep you from distributing copies among people, since the removable memory would likely be very easy to duplicate.

Either way, it definitely depends on how the games are encoded for the VC... No matter how easily the network algorithm is broken, the encoding could still cause insane difficulties in doing it.

Seeing how you can store them on standard SD cards, yeah, it needs some sort of anti-duplication system. As long as I can transfer them to a different console (eg if mine breaks, I don't want to have to buy them again, just move them to the new one) I really think it's a good idea. (It's DRM done right!)

Either way I bet you 20 bucks the ROMs you download are signed, probably with RSA, and the console just refuses to play unsigned images. It would have worked for the DS, had there not been some flaws in the implementation. (Entry address defined outside of the RSA-signed area, whoops!) I'm also willing to bet they're encrypted in some way using some console-specific value such as the MAC address (or each console could potentially have its own RSA key). But someone will find a hole, or a modchip will come out, and homebrew and probably unsigned VC ROMs will be doable. The only case I know of that nobody's managed to find any hole at all is the latest PSP firmware, and AFAIK it's pretty new (and it took them many revisions to patch all the holes).

The only difference this time is that the system will be online 24/7, so exploits will be patched pretty quick.

Wouldn't it be illegal to play hacked ROMS that run on patented hardware anyway? Unless Nintendo puts some sort of legal block on NES hacking, it would be fine to play hacked NES ROMS since it no longer has a patent.

Perhaps when you download games to the Wii VC you have an account. Then Nintendo knows which games you have paid to download. Now because the system is on 24/7, they can check your game list and if there's any games that are on your VC that aren't on your list, the game is simply deleted but if its, you know, an accident and that you actually paid to play the game, you would call NOA to double check the game. Maybe Nintendo will talk with Microsoft and see if they can make their Wii unhackable like the 360. Anyone know if the 360 has been hacked anyway yet?

yeah, right...
microsoft invented the unhackable console and what else?
oh, i forgot, sony invented 3d games: http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/sony/sony-we-didnt-steal-nintendos-idea-177317.php#more

please stop being so naive.

its quite common knowledge that the fundamental technology and knowledge is available years or even decades before it enters consumer mass-market products.
the point is that they have to be cost-effective.

none of the big three has to ask its competitors how to do something due to lacking knowledge in the field.
if and how to implement something is ultimately determined by the cost factor.

roms are copyrighted and that can last 70 to 120 years. even then, the U.S. Congress can extend the copyright. (if you don't live in the U.S., then its different)
