Hey gang,

I'm considered a quiet, shy person. The reason why I bring up this topic is I need help socializing with others. I mean, I can conversate with adults well, but with people my age, I mean I try but most of the time I'm quiet. I try to start a conversaton, but I basically worry about what people will say or if they won't talk to me. I'm considered a "nerd/ band geek." So, does anybody have any suggestions?
I'm just tired of being the quiet person I am.

Dont listen to that guy when it comes to talking to other people, his whole post was horrible mangled english.

The only way I have found to socialize with people is basically to force myself to be social. I am a very shy secluded person, but there are times when I am in the middle of a big group and I only know a few people there. I usually get so fed up with my own shyness that I make myself talk to people. I walk up to a complete stranger and say "Hi, you don't know me. My name is Kris and I hate talking to people I dont know, it drives me nuts." Usually they either look at me funny, or they laugh. If they laugh, I instantly feel less shy around that person. It helps me get to know people better. In the end, don't care what other people think about you. If you do that, you become one of those "people-pleasers" that everyone hates. Be yourself, if people dont like you, then fuck them.

"nerd/ band geek."
Dont consider yourself that. Thats the first thing to do.

Anyways, I was in the exact same position that you are in right now. In band, doesnt talk a lot, not one to take risks, the "Smartest guy in class" (I certainly HOPE thats the kind of nerd you mean). Ive gotten over most of that... but heck, I still worry about what people think of me when I talk. You learn to just get over these things and have people accept you for who you are.

-Use what you do to an advantage. Dont think of yourself as a band geek. Think of yourself as having a very useful talent
-Defend what you do with a passion if you really like it that much.
-Voice your opinion, even if it means shouting (only a little and in certain situations) to get heard. You may be suprized who agrees with you.
-If youre excessively smart, go ahead and offer help to people, or help others if they come to you.
-Try and jump into a conversation at the lunch table, especially if it may cause a laugh.
-Go ahead and glance at what people do. If it seems mildly interesting to you, go ahead and comment on it.
-You can make a lot of good pals by listening to random conversation in the classroom.
-Form a really strong friendship with one person. A person you can talk to, and talk to freely without a feeling of being judged.
-Push the feeling of being judged to the back of your mind.
-Go ahead and join a club. Clubs usually mean the people share your interests.

These are just a few things that Ive done to push my shyness behind me. Believe me, it isnt gone. I still cant talk to new people my age. At. All. But once I get past that initial meeting and become friends, its smooth sailing.

Most importantly... DONT change yourself to please others. Everyone likes a person for who they are... youll find people will talk to the real you a lot easier than a fake one.

You know what will increase your options? GET INVOLVED, in other extracurricular activities!!!

Try different things out, there are plenty of things to do in this world. Skydiving, art, karate, sewing, woodworking, birdwatching, sports... whatever tickles your fancy! There are several clubs that you can join. You'll meet new people and gain friends quickly. Find yourself a hobby to gain the interest of other people. It'll give you something to talk about.
