It's like they're totally ignorant. It's especially annoying when they "correct" people who claim they're 1,000, 1,000,000, or whatever.

But 1kb DOES = 1024b ...
Although since it's easier to calculate base 10, so everyone refers to them as 1000 b = 1 kb etc etc. It doesn't REALLY matter which you say it is. Officially its 1024 etc, but who cares?

Then what do you propose they should be called? Might as well do something about it

No, you're wrong. I don't know where everyone's getting that, but eh. A kilobyte is exactly 1000 bytes. I mean, that's what it means. Kilo means thousand. Thousand bytes. It's just incorrect to say anything else

I'm not certain what you mean.

Well yeah. If you look at it the WRONG way, I suppose it is 1024.

So you're right, you're just COMPLETELY WRONG.

Alastor, in reality, 1kb = 1024b, because everything in computers is BASE 2!!! 2^x cannot = 1000, EVER, in this universe.
It's called a kilobyte because people like to round and calculating with base 10 is easier.
So, you fail.

The term "kilobyte" was first used to refer to a value of 1024 bytes (2^10), because the binary nature of digital computers lends itself to quantities that are powers of two, and 2^10 is roughly one thousand. As computers became more widely used, this misuse (according to the BIPM) of the SI prefix spread from the slang of computer professionals into the mainstream lexicon, creating much confusion. See binary prefix for more details.

That, and I learned this my first day of college and immediately disregarded it and kept using common language.

I can see someone saying 300K, but 300M? Would take me a while to figure that out.

I go with what I learned since I was in Grade 6. I'll stick by my knowledge.

*fixed your link*

This is all well and good, and maybe enlightening. However, I will feel like a total idiot using prefixes like this if I ever start using them in speech with other programmers. kee bee bytes, gi bee bytes, .... ex bee bytes.... sounds made up like baby speak, not like a standard.

But it is a standard, the IEC standard

The general public will never start using Ki, Mi, Gi, etc for as long as storage manufacturers continue to use K, M, G. Doing so is like asking the U.S. to finally abandon the English system of units.
