...to do some solering to make your rumble pack (you know those from the n64 plugged into the expansion slot of your controller) work without batteries...

I know there were some third party ones that worked completely without battery, so why not just mod the original ones to do so as well?!

So, anybody got experience with doing such stuff or even a link to a tutorial for this?!

Btw. it's of course not romhacking, this is referring to in the first place, but I didn't see no place for 'Hardware Hacking' around here

If you don't see a forum for something, then it either belongs in General or, in most cases, the Pit of Dispair. Make a note of this, and your stay should be pleasent enough.

Alright then, if any of the mods would be so nice as to move this thread to the appropriate board?

Either way, anyone got an idea for a solution?

BAD BAD BAD Don't play mod, we mods can handle our job on our own kthx. This doesn't belong in "General" or even "Hardware/Software", it belongs in General Hacking

I have one of those batteryless packs...

Try looking for a lead from the N64 port on your rumble pack to whatever controls the motor's power, abd route that to the motor instead and disconnect the battery jacks from the motor's power supply. maybe that'll work. If not, try looking for a power lead by tracing leads on your n64's controller PCB, and then connect that pin on the rumble pack to the motor, through whatever controls the motor.

Clear as mud, right?

As I understand it, when the N64 controllers were designed, the rumble pack had not yet been conceived. When designing the rumble pack, Nintendo must have realized that the controller could not supply enough current to the motor and still work reliably. IIRC the N64 controllers run at a low voltage(3.3) and the cables have thin wires. If a heavy load is placed on the controller's power wires, the voltage in the controller can sag. In other words, starting a motor could cause a small brownout inside the controller that could cause the controller to malfunction.

That being said, I vaguely remember seeing a web page that describes how to wire a rumble pack to pull power from the controller, but It was a long time ago. The third party rumble packs were probably designed with at least one of the following:
  • a disregard for quality
  • an energy storage scheme(eg. slowly charge a capacitor when not rumbling)
  • a less powerful motor

I haven't used a modded or third party rumble pack. So, I can't be totally sure how reliable they are.

That must mean that you saw a place for hardware hacking? (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Nice. Did anyone ever make a third-party controller with a built-in memory/rumble pak?

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it...

And if there was one, it would have needed memorycards equipped with batteries, cause the internal power supply would already be occupied by the rumble feature... anyway, there was a third party rumble pack - memory card combo-thingy back then... tremor pack or something it was called, which unfortunately also needed batteries to fulfill its purpose...

I owned a device like that, in fact I still do.

It worked without actually using batteries... but it'd cause white lines on the TV when it rumbled!

I should take some pictures sometime.

I guess it drained enough power from the N64 to cause interference. Which might be why Nintendo didn't make that way offially. :/
