PROPOSAL:
Build an “ultimate” Super Mario 3 for NES hack using the combined knowledge of the “rom hacking community”.

BACKGROUND:
With tools today such as SMB3 Workshop and Map Editor, any yahoo can make their own levels, and with some effort they can even make good ones. People have also done their own ASM hacks to create brand new power ups, enemies, and other things from their imagination. This hack would not be about creating new stuff. This hack would be about fusing together old stuff. This hack would be about combining the best of the best (or perhaps iconic) enemies, levels, and features (wherever possible) from all Mario games into the NES SMB3.

WHY NES SMB3?:
SMB3 seems to be in a “sweet spot”. SMB1 has more hack knowledge around it but is too simplistic to implement much new stuff. SMW is more advanced but seems less accessible based on the hacks out there on the net. NES games also seem to have more utility outside of PC emulators (for instance, PocketNES, creating NES carts, etc)

WHAT WILL BE CHANGED:
The intent is to bring together the best of the best from other Mario games. I have a list of features here. I believe that all are attainable (because I have seen most of them done). I will note if something has already been done by me or provided by someone else. Basically, this hack will have everything that can be done by me or collected from experts around the “rom hacking community”.

LEVEL EDITING:
Because the intent is to make this a combination of all Mario games I would suggest 2 versions of the finished ROM:
1) Version with no level changes so that users can apply it to their own level hacks (bearing in mind that level editing is now accessible to everyone)
2) Version with levels that summarize each main Mario game, taking the first and best levels from each game using the ultimate Mario 3 engine.
World 1: Super Mario 1 (DONE)
World 2: Super Mario 2U
World 3: Super Mario 3 (Maybe the lost levels)
World 4: Super Mario World
World 5: Super Mario Land
World 6: Super Mario Land 2
World 7: Super Mario 2J
World 8: ?? New SMB? Yoshi’s Island?, maybe a 2D representation of Mario 64?
Hammer Bros Levels – Made into single screen Mario game levels – Donkey Kong, DK Jr, Mario Bros, Maybe some from Gameboy DK.
Some of this is done.

GRAPHICS:
Most of the graphics will be updated to Yoshi’s Island style (where possible), some to SMW, and some may be changed to fit in the SMB2U levels. Some of this is done.

FEATURES:
1)Choose Mario or Luigi – This has been done to the extreme in Mario Adventure 2 (Both have different faces). It could also be done to a lesser extent (same faces, different colors/jumps ala SMB2J). It would be good to package that feature so it could be applied to this and other hacks.
2)Spin Jump – Ala Super Mario Land 2. Perhaps done by hacking the tail spin move?
3)Ground Pound – Ala SM64. Maybe a variation of the Tanooki Statue routine?
4)Coins from fried enemies – Ala SMW. I saw this done in MA2 I think
5)Spin jump off of note block – Saw this patch a long time ago –I know it’s not fodder but would be fun to include.

POWER UPS:
It may be fine to have these replace/alter more obscure suits rather than expand the rom.
1)Blue Shell – ala New SMB. I just saw this recently posted for another hack
2)Cape (DONE)– ala SMW.
3)Yoshi – ala SMW, although a full featured Yoshi may be impossible, would be nice to get the visual with some type of function (maybe a Shoe replacement?)
4)Vegetables(DONE) – ala SMB2U pull grass and throw vegetable (not a suit).
5) Poison Mushrooms - ala SMB2J

ENEMIES:
SMB3 has perhaps the most classic/iconic lineup so there won’t be a huge overhaul, have just a few additions and changes:
1)SHYGUY (DONE) -SMB2U
2)SNIFIT (DONE)–SMB2U
3)SHELLCREEPER (DONE)–MB (for the 2 player battle)
4)BABY BOWSER (DONE)– Just an update to Boom Boom
5)DK – Probably just an update to Sledge Bro

MUSIC:
Seems to be the least knowledge around this so I am not really planning any changes. If you know how to (assuming it is changing it to other themes in the series) then we’d be happy to hear from you.

SOUNDS GOOD HOW CAN I HELP?:
Contribute ideas, levels and especially functionality pieces! Graphics, text, etc. I can handle. Some ASM hacking and tweaking I can muddle through but I am no DD. Putting your feature/change in ips patch format would probably be best so my feeble brain can use it. Based on what I can do - this hack WILL eventually be done with the levels, graphics, enemies, and some of the power ups and features but how soon and how many may depend on the benevolence and community spirit of experts like you.

WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?:
The rom hack will be publicly available (probably on romhacking.net) when finished. I will keep track of contributors. Of course, this is rom hacking, not a road to riches and fame. You’ll get generally the same thing you get out of doing any rom hack – fun of playing, fun of doing. Maybe some fun of community collaboration too?

I will post demos, updates when there is a little more to go with.

16-bit NES game...? Wow. And perhaps I can help with level design?

He means to update them to the style, not the actual graphics. We all know that they aren't likely to get the actual color depth.

Well... umm... Good luck. I don't have any actual skills for this, but... if you think it'll work out, the more power to ya. (I don't really, but... yeah.)

Are you hacking anything in the game?

If not, I've seen so many posts like this over the years it's not even funny. The chances of you finding anyone to do any of the things you're talking about are slim to none; if you had been working on this for a while yourself, and had made some decent progress and needed help doing some things beyond the scope of your abilities, you'd have a much better chance of finding people to do that.

Ideas alone aren't enough to produce a game, particularly a ROM hack. Something like what you're talking about would take so much work that it's not even funny (And yes, I've worked on some of the most extensive ROM hacks ever released for the NES); even if you do find people to do some work, expect them to vanish at the drop of the hat, etc.

Good luck, I guess.

He's already done work on it. Asking the community to combine thier talents and make this work isn't an unreasonable request; For one man to do this alone would be an unrealistic and astounding feat.

Uhm...

really, I'm doing something as big if not bigger than this, doing it alone isn't so far fetched.

Hmm, maybe I should've mentioned that I'm a lazy bastard who could never be arsed to take on this kind of load? =P

Help is definitely good, though. I hack for fun -- Not to stress myself out over huge workloads and deadlines and shit. Too much hassle, and it takes the fun out of hacking IMO.

Not as far fetched maybe, but also not a terrible idea by any stretch of the imagination. Group hacks are fun, people communicate, skills and talents are shared, and possibly new friendships are made through it. At the very least, more gets done, as long as all members contribute, if not, then still lessons are learned, by all parties.

Biejor, make sure you don't allow just anybody in, ask for credentials, their previous work. High ideals don't get projects where they need to go. Even if you have to do most of the work yourself, if you want this project to go through, be selective of the people you assign to part of your game modification.

Group hacks are possible, but much planning and awesome leadership are needed, and if you are that leader, you must be awesome at it to get it from start to finish (and I have and am seeing it done in the ROM hacking community). If you really like someone working with you, teach them things they didn't know, that you know so far. Upkeep for your workers will be absolutely vital. Keep in touch with them and help them on the way.

Thanks for the advice. Like I said this will be completed in some fashion – just depends on others to provide some features (Select Player, Blue Shell Power Up, etc.) These types of features have been accomplished before so it would just be up to those people to split off those pieces for others to use.
