Well I just finished off all the level themes today on this hack, I still have a lot of spriting to do, and I still have to actually edit the level layouts. Before I do that though, I've passed the hack on to optomon to work on some new music for the hack, I was impressed by his new sountrack for his hack, so I decided that I would want to work with him. This thread is where I'm going to put all of my screens and updates. For now, I'll show you all the themes for the new levels.

Title Screen

The Gates

Level 1 - Castle Entrance

Level 2 - Royal Chessboard

Level 3 - The Top of Olrox's Palace

Level 4 - The Pit/Courtyard

Level 5 - Olrox's Quarters

Level 6 - Clock Tower

Those graphics look pretty impressive.

On a side note, I'd love to see a major overhaul of Simon's Quest.

I have had no desire to play any castlevania hacks until this one. Graphics go a long way.

Also, out of curiosity.... is there a Hack you layout is based on?

I believe the layout comes from a SMW hack of his.

Everything looks nice; I'm looking forward to playing this.

Jigglysaint: I've looked into Simon's Quest a little bit already, but I'd have to find a ton of data for it to make a decent overhaul of the game. All I can do right now is edit the TSA and level layouts. I can't edit enemies or attibute tables yet, so it won't work out extremely well. The plan though is if I can find all the data I would need, I would make giant Symphony of the Night-esque castle out of the entire game.

ImInvisible: Thanks, and my layout is from some SMW GFX stuff I did, it never really turned into a hack, I just sort of like the way it came out.

I wish I had the inspiration/innovation [not sure what word I'm looking for] that you have when making graphics. I started a hack of castlevania sometimes last year, and haven't been able to make more than one level because I can't figure out how things should look. I'm especially loving the gate, and orlox's quarters/clock tower. The royal chessboard clashes too much for my likes, and the inside of the castle entrance is abit bright. Pretty decent overall, very colorful.

Here's the biggest bit of advice I can give to you when it comes to getting inspiration for a graphics heavy project. Play a game that is WAY more advanced than the one you're hacking. Take a bunch of screenshots of the coolest looking areas. Then, go into MS Paint, open up one of the screenshots and zoom in x8. Then just look all around, and pick apart each texture pixel by pixel, the more you do it, the better you'll get. For this hack, I used Symphony of the Night as a reference for a lot of the GFX, especially in the later levels. In fact a lot of Olrox's Quarters, and the Clocktower are taken directly from SotN. I just looked at each part of those areas and basically redrew them all by hand one pixel at a time. Another small tip is don't be afraid to borrow things from other games if they look good. Some of the smaller details in this hack were actually from a graphics pack that Bit-Blade gave to me (Those details are the skulls/chains that the skeletons hang on in Level 3, and the columns from Level 3 and Level 5 along with some things I used in The Pit. I also use a large clock in the last boss fight as a promise that I made to him.) But there's definitely no shame in ripping stuff as long as it looks good.

I have a thing against using refrences, actually. Being forced to do so in a 9th-grade art class made me not only never use a refrence again, but made me never take an art class again, I do however, study certain game's graphics [demon's crest is one I"ve been looking over recently in another coummunity.] Also I'd shame myself if I ever ripped graphics, it's against my nature, and I'm getting into game development [got a job working on a mobile phone game recently, woot], so that would be a very bad habbit as well, for me at least. I believe the best way to get better is practice and practice and practice, and getting input from other in the same field. I have a folder with 200+ pixelart images done since september , I practice lots.

Hahaha, that's kind of funny. Art class is also where I learned to use a reference for my work. I'm also a cinematography student in college though, and professionally we always use other films, and pieces of artwork for reference so I guess that's sort of why I do it for stuff like this. If anything though, out of my advice, take this much out of it. If you're working on an 8-bit game. Look at 16-bit (or even more) graphics and just figure out ways to convert them to 4 colors. I don't mean do that for a hack, but just do it for practice. Once you figure out how to down convert 16-bit to 8-bit well, then you will get a lot better at making your own 8-bit stuff.

What I do for my graphics is a tad simple: I rip graphics from SNES game (or newer) and convert them so that they can work on the NES. After a few hundred tiles, you start to realize a "pattern" as to what makes good graphics. Pretty soon, you know how to draw as good as Square's or Enix's or whichever company's artists just by comparing and redrawing

I am very excited about contributing to this game.

I have already been working on some possible compositions. Here's one I'm testing out right now, in midi form. I didn't think about it when I was composing it, but the musical phrases play out kind of like a series of events. The five phrases could be described along the lines of "Lets go in, this place is kind of weird, wait there's something here, oh my god WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING!, It's closing in on me and I'm finished". I think the "what the hell is that thing" sequence needs more melodic complexity, and am considering adding drumbeats to this song. I don't think it sounds too much like something out of symphony of the night, but I do think it's at least worth hearing.

I'm definately digging that song Optomon. It also sort of goes with the overbearing royalty theme I'm going for (With the heavy use of the color purple, and locations like "The Royal Chessboard"). I dunno, I'm personally thinking Castle Entrance or Royal Chessboard for this tune, I think it would fit extremely well in either.

Great work Dr. Mario. Everything looks fantastic. Can I ask you something though? How did you change the graphics?

When I open up the game in YY-CHR or TLP, the graphics look not quite right. If I edit any tile into a smiley face for example, in game and in Stake, that same smiley face looks all weirded up. Has to do with compression and what not I'm sure. I realize I can just use the TSA in Stake to change the graphics, I was just hoping to cut and paste my graphics in YY-CHR instead.

How are you going about it?

mikepjr: No it's not done yet. I finished all the level themes, but I have a ton of spriting left to do, and all the level design. Right now optomon is working on the music, and when I get over this cold I have, I'm going to start doing level design.

AlexAR: Use YY-CHR, go to the title screen and press "+" 8 times to align the graphics, then edit away.

WOW! That is just insane! lol My god. Why isn't that "feature" in the edit menu or have its own button on the window. Crazy! Thanks so much Dr. Mario. You have just saved my Castlevania hack. Unbelievable!

Just for fun, and because I plan on getting a cart made of this hack once I finish it, and I can find a cheap copy of CV (at least I hope I can find one), here's a concept for the label art that I'm going to have for it:
