The thread title might be not that descriptive, but I actually don't know a better title.

I installed Skype some days ago and bought a headset today. It is an ordinary model with two wires (one green and one red cable), they go into the microphone and output (?) ports.
The thing works well without major settings to be required and even the quality is good, since I have a cheap onboard chip (VIA AC 97) and headset for this.

However, the microphone records not only my voice but everything from the computer, like system sounds, winamp or if I'm on an internet page with embedded sounds and such things.
I checked the volume properties and muted all record options but the mic option. Since I have a German Windows, it might be harder if I posted an image of this.
As stated, even though it is cheap sound, the quality is very good when people talk to me.

Does this sending-only-mic-sounds thingy require an own or additional (PCI) sound card or do I have to get a more expensive sound card with one USB connector ?
Even if, I would be worried because two sound drivers parallel could cause instant blue screens of death pretty easily. I'm running a stable Windows XP SP2 copy which makes no trouble at all.

Thanks in advance for replies,

Dominik aka Surlent

Edit: Somehow I tweaked around in the settings and disabled all settings for recording (even some unused ones like Aux) and reduced their volumes down.
The sound is still there, but very silent and won't distract the people too much in the conference.
So this problem could be declared as "solved".
Skye simply rocks ...

Your microphone is picking up the sounds your computer is making. Sounds normal to me.

Integrated sound can do that a lot, and other weird problems. A real sound card is as important as a real video card, I don't know why people think these things aren't important.

I'm actually satisfied with my onboard sound. Since I never play newer games, it suits just fine for me for listening to Winamp and running emulators. As stated, the background noise is reduced (see the edit in my post above).

HyperHacker: I didn't know that yet - but I know it now. I even have an old sound card (Creative PCI128i) hanging around, but simply am too lazy to put it into my computer.

And another person with an actually good sound card has the same thing; I just thought, before this thread was made, that the recording between the microphone and the desktop sounds are two separate ... let's call them "channels" once.

Anyway, I tried it yesterday with running Winamp with a track from In Flames at full volume and the other people simply didn'T hear that much of this.

Thanks for replies, the "problem" is solved - and Skype simply rocks
