As you all know, there are some newbies who post BMP screenshots because Paint is the only half-decent Imaging program on their computer.
Whenever someone notices the screenshot in BMP format, they cry out "No BMPs! PNGs rule BMPs drool" etc etc
There are some programs which do these conversions, but they attach a big blazing ad to your screenshots *coughSolidConverterGXcough* and it ruins other people's appreciation of your screens. I'll just get to my point.

Allow me to introduce Mvent2's Online BMP to PNG converter.
Its free, and doesn't slap an ad on your image. You upload the BMP to the server. The server gives you the size of the BMP and the (approximate) size of the PNG. It also tells you how much space you're saving. Also, the BMP is deleted from the server afterwards so don't worry about my server space. Just worry about the bandwidth.

If you want/need to use it, click here: http://mvent2.1l.com/converter

I am glad a seasoned member here posted this topic. *cough

For those of you who don't know, when you save a file in MS Paint you can save it as a png, so converter really arent neccessary.

Yes, but using an advanced drawing program/converter saves all of the quality.

It's up to you whether to use JPEG or PNG. PNG offers perfect quality while JPEG is smaller. (JPEG is designed for real-life pictures, screenshots and artwork and such will look fuzzy and don't even think about editing them.) BMP just plain sucks.

I'm talking about people who still run old computers and still run 98 etc. They can't save or even read PNGs

Actually, since we're in SMW hacking...

ZSNES CAN SAVE SCREENSHOTS AS PNGS! No converter needed!

Or better yet, fuck that shit and upload your images to ImageShack and have it automatically convert your BMPs to PNGs (without even having to tell it to do so) plus get hosting.

Hey, for me ZSNES can't take any screens without them being all green and ugly.

I have to use Paint and then Irfanview, which is really a nice app.

And you can also try using pngrewrite and pngcrush together, it'll save a bunch of space. pngrewrite counts the number of unique colors; if it's 256 or less (which is always the case with SNES games), it'll make a palette for those colors and make a new PNG file. pngcrush will re-compress it to be very small. I've done an experiement, and I see pngrewrite'd/pngcrush'd screenshots here being a quarter of the original size.

The only issue of saving as a jpg in ms paint seems to be the unusual grittiness after conversion. Photoshop does not produce grit when saving as jpg. I never understood that exactly.

Compression factor. Most high-end programs let you set jpeg compression factor -- note that even at 1% compression, you'll still get the scaling artifacts and color bleeding that makes the keen-sighted cry, but joe average will be slightly less likely to notice it.

Also, ZSNES PNG screenshots have this weird tendancy to turn the top row of pixels black, truncate the bottom row of pixels altogether, and occasionally bump up the green factor on the left-most columns of pixels by four degress for no apparent reason.

The older version didn't do that (I think) but it's rather annoying nonetheless.

*coughirfanviewcough*

Seriously, go google Irfan View and be amazed at how few troubles with picture conversions you will have...

Note. This is to put emphasis on what Sukasa said... Paint and Irfanview is REALLY all you need

AARRGGHH! I'll set the record straight here and now. Why did I design this program?

1) I am still using Windows 98. WINDOWS 98. Laugh if you want. 98. Har har har. MS Paint 98 can't save PNGs. MS Paint 98 can't read PNGs. MS Paint 98 saves crappy JPGs and GIFs. MS Paint 98 saves perfect 24-bit Bitmaps.
2) I am fucking sick of booting into Linux to use Imagemagick to get it into PNG.
3) My computer is full enough as it is. I don't want to have to download some "Irfan View" for something I can design a perfectly good clone of in PNG.
4) I want to do SOMETHING in PHP!!
5) Those idiots that are the School IT Admins blocked Imageshack because they are paranoid about Porno. I can't even access Google Image Search at school for fuck's sake. I can't access the net at home.
6) I can't install programs on the school computers.

Because it seems to be more of a problem here than anywhere else?

Jeez, lay off the poor guy...he does something to help the community, and all you guys can do is nitpick. All this talk of image converting tools and whatnot only serves to confuse n00bs even more, which is exactly what his little online tool was designed NOT to do.

Anyway, nice job, mvent2. Hopefully people will find it useful.

I have a suggestion. Instead of saying "Please use PNG", how about a real rule against BMPs? Whenever someone posts BMP screenshots, a mod removes them from the post, saying "BMPs are not allowed. Use PNG instead.". This way, newbies (and maybe even n00bs... if we're lucky) may learn to use PNG instead of BMPs and everyone will be happy.

I wasn't trying to nitpick, I just thought it would be in Rohm Acking. Sorry if it did sound like it though.
