No doubt this will piss off a lot of people...

Veterans of the game probably remember that it's impossible to spin 7-7-7 in that battle. Not anymore. Setzer's reels have been derigged, and it's now based on your timing.

However, one additional little tidbit was added.

If a formation does not allow Joker Doom, the attack checks for instant death immunity, and misses if the targets are immune.

Actually, its a good improvement, the reels are better and this also makes Setzer a bit more useful (I don't find him all that great in-game after the World of Ruin)

That and I really hate the Lagomorph that you get with a mismatching combination... this will help keep that to a minimum.

By the way, you guys are doing great work here, I'm impressed with you being able to give a great game a bit of a face-lift. Makes me want to play it again.

Eh just a quick question. What percentage do you guys think you are at at this stage of the patch regarding completion? And perhaps a rough estimate of when you guys will release the patch?

I am really impressed and love the font, regardless of what others say and cant wait to see or even if you are going to change the character portraits in the main menu, since I also think that they were quite ugly. Anyway keep up the great work.

I have absolutely no idea. Given that we don't really know how many more assembly, engine, or other oddball tweaks are going to be done. Plus there's still about 320 monsters left to do, and a bunch of spells yet.

And perhaps a rough estimate of when you guys will release the patch?

No timetable has been set. It'll get done when it's done. A lot has been done, but there's still a bunch more to do yet.

As far as the reworking of the text goes:

1) The new conversation bits are pretty good. And this is coming from someone who is incredibly harsh on most kinds of writing. However...

2) The ALL-CAPS are not. If you want to bring emphasis out in something, do it with your writing. It should sound natural. The minute you all-caps anything, it screams the following:

a) amateur
b) hack
c) turd

So please, go back to anywhere you used ALL-CAPS and rethink the scenario.

3) The swearing. It wasn't in FFIV, and it just doesn't have that good of a feel when I see it in there. "Bigass snail?" Lame. That soldier sounds like a dork. Also, and I'm sure this wasn't intentional, but didn't you mean to say that the "ship" was leaving the port?

Lastly:

4) The Banon thing wasn't funny. It made me cringe. The idea in itself is good; draw Banon doing something embarrassing. But wouldn't it be neater if he were doing something embarrassing that actually was tied to the story or the plot? Or even better yet; to his character? Going the low-road can be fun at times, but it's also an easy out. I would really encourage that you don't have him "molesting a donkey." I mean, fifth graders might get some shits and giggles out of it, but I can't really even see that happening.

---

And I'm not an RPG purist or anything. I'm credibly open-minded. I'm not holding you up to some ideal set by the canons or anything. I just want to give some advice from the perspective of somebody who writes a lot. What you are doing is really cool, and I like the idea of making the conversation in the game more conversational. Just be sure not to draw the player out of the experience and make him realize, "Oh, right, this is a hack."

In that scene, Biggs was caught off guard by the giant monster blocking the path. And in doing so, Wedge quoted his stupidity.

I am annoyed by the event in general:
  • As a whole, literal translation, Woolsey translation, Babel-fish, A-Z, 1-10, it made no sense at all. It does nothing for character development or plot, it's just there.
  • Changing that event is a little harder than it seems too, since I can't just put the changed areas whereever the hell I want. Relative pointers.
  • Assuming it was changed, what would we change it to do?

It overlays something like this:
Terra is running around the Returner's Hideout, seeking her recent companions for advise about what to do.
Stumbles across a piece of paper, and writes something on it.
Later at a conference, Banon discovers something on it, wonders "whodunnit" and Terra laughs.

I think there's a couple occurances of this event too, so there'd be a lot of changing to do.

Ultimately, no idea what to do...

There's going to be a lot done to try and pass off the feel that the game is completely fresh. Most of the dialogue will be very serious, but there will also be some lighter moments when comedy tries to escape and be known.

Also, and I'm sure this wasn't intentional, but didn't you mean to say that the "ship" was leaving the port?

That was part of a big list of typos which became this...

I see myself as a sub-par writer, everyone else likes my work though, maybe I'm just a little too critical on myself.

Sorry but they have to stay, I only use them for emphasis, in the same way every official translation does. If I could I'd stick in bold and italic fonts but that would require figuring out how the game links the two fonts, find some way to add more DTE values for these fonts, etc. In the end it's not worth it, I dislike all caps myself but I dislike putting a ton of work into something that's not worth it even more.

"Bigass snail" is a well-received line, Leno and I liked it but it seems everyone else for the most part loves it. It fits for sure, just wait until you play that part.

Leno covered this fairly well, it's by far the least serious thing I wrote for this hack, let me explain myself:

1. The event is hidden, most people don't even know of its existence.

2. The original event made no sense (Leno said about writing something, the original is a Japanese joke that doesn't translate well, it has something to do with not throwing away the paper, nothing to do with writing or anything of the sort)

3. I'm trying to developed Terra's personality a bit, she's not afraid to fun of a person she doesn't like. I hated personality-less Terra in the original.

4. Banon is a jackass, this comes into play three times (Banon acts like a jackass the entire time in the Returners hideout, Terra draws a donkey, Banon calls the unknown drawer a jackass).

Seriously, here are a few examples from my big list of character personalities:

Terra: "Normal"
Edgar: Formal, perverted
Kefka: Insane, double-talking
Banon: Jackass

I hate my Banon, it's just the way I write him, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not really.

And I'm not an RPG purist or anything. I'm credibly open-minded. I'm not holding you up to some ideal set by the canons or anything. I hold myself to a high standard, I want this hack to seem official and blow Woolsey's (And Sky Render's) work out of the water. Maybe the Banon event is a little much, but as I said it's hidden and Terra is expressing her feelings about Banon. Take it from me, I hate "spoofs" and I will do anything to stop this from being lumped into that category, the only thing unofficial about this is the language at times, but it's used sparingly as it should.

Edit: Fixed a borked quote tag.

As far as the snail thing goes; you guys seem pretty set. That's cool too; it's your thing. It's just a personal preference thing with me, and it doesn't sit well, but it's just one line in the end.

I agree whole-heartedly that Terra's character in the game was about as flat as a diving board and that it could definately use some improvement. However, that whole incident with the Banon thing - is there no way you could change the script? I really don't know the specifics about what it takes to change the lay-out of the game, but I assume that once you find/change something, you can always return to that spot and re-write it.

It's just the whole "molesting a donkey" bit. It's definately cringe-worthy. I mean, I'm a normal guy. There's a few gigs on my drive dedicated to porn, like every red-blooded North American. But still... there are some things that are sacrosanct. Like bringing a dildo into church. You don't do that. Some people could probably make a good argument as to why it indeed should be there, but in the end, it's a comfort thing. There are certain things you don't mess with. And that is the key! That is the knowledge one must carry with him when one carries out a project like this. That it will be inevitably held up against the original. Being so, you can stretch certain things, you can change others, but boundaries do exist. Almost everything else in the game reminds the gamer of the original. You are still bound to made to pay homage to the original, whether or not you like it. Acknowledging this (and thereby respecting the original) is the first step to making a really good hack of it.

There have been several people who have tried to rewrite Mozart's operas, adding in their own flourishes and inevitably trying to label it their own. The problem with this is that the piece of work as a whole has a certain rhythm to it, a certain flow that made it so great in the first place. Like a great work of beauty, but one scratch would be enough to make it topple to the ground. That is not to say that Final Fantasy VI was flawless, but one always has to concentrate very deeply on the changes one makes and sees how they fit into the overall whole. Often, the little scratches you make can further a work's beauty. Other times, you don't end up making a scratch, but instead end up making a gash. And I'm afraid that this Banon deal comes off as a gash. As I said before, the idea in itself is good; have Banon doing something silly in the picture. Having him molest a donkey... I dunno. It just doesn't fit.

Best of luck to you guys. Really. It looks like it's coming along superbly, it's just that Banon bit... it needs to be changed.

If I remembered the game better myself (it's been a year or two since I've touched it), I might be able to call forth Banon's character a bit better. I don't honestly remember him being a tool, I just remember that he was pretty weak sauce all around (defense and character wise) and that it would indeed be difficult to make a joke involving him. Regardless, he deserves one greater than the one assigned, and I make it your duty to find something more suitable not only for him and Terra, but for the game as a whole.

Yes indeed, that is the sprite from FF5. I also have another sprite to show off.

The Czar Dragon has appeared, but has taken on a new name. This screenshot was taken in Mt. Zozo, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll show up there.

Yeah, that's the god of dragons. His arsenal is rather large too. I'd hate to be the guys that ran into him.

Just a quick status update, progress is being made, it's mostly behind-the-scenes stuff that I doubt anyone would be interested in reading.

One thing of interest, I went through the game and found all the monsters that shared the same sprite and palette (Cadet and Templar, for example) and gave them unique palettes. Don't worry about the palettes fitting in, I am the palette master!

New palettes and a lot of new sprites are going to make the monsters much more interesting, trust me, just wait until you see some of the new bosses waiting for you near the end of the game

See if you can spot the difference in these sprites:

While working with monster graphics Lenophis and I noticed a few had "holes" in them, areas where transparent pixels were used unintentionally. We went on a bit of a crusade to fix them, pretty much every monster had at least one hole.

Well, that's all for now.

I'm probably waiting to play FF VI again until this hack is released, you guys' work really impresses me. Oh and the hole in Wrexsoul is in his chest area, left side. Right one is your fixed version. Some of the things you are discovering about the game are quite interesting.

Good news: I believe I have sparked a little randomness into the game (literally). The old random number generator has been replaced with something new, which I'm sure every single abuser will whine about for 10 minutes. Whether or not it's anymore random than the previous generator remains to be seen.

Bad news: With the new policy, more than likely this will be my last post here. I invite anybody interested in this project to keep tabs on it here, at romhacking.net. I have no intention of applying for any status, either I can post or I can't.

Either way, the project lives on, even if I won't be letting anybody know of updates here.
