The sprites don't need remodeling, Square got that right at the start. Unless Dragon and Leno plan on doing so, but what would seem of more importance would be fixing those god-awful character portraits on the menu screen.

Hint.

We aren't looking to retool or redo the sprites. Pretty much what Metal Knuckles said, that's one thing that Square did do right.

However, if you want to make some new ones and submit them, we'll go over them and decide if any do or should be changed. I cannot and will not make any promises that any of them would be used though.

So are you just hacking the stats or will you be working on a new story too?

A hack with just stats\abilities\items alone would be cool.
I like your Lores.
And that's just Strago, I can't wait to see what you'll do with Gau.

You know what would be cool?
Have the game start like usual but when you go to the menu screen, it takes you to the one like in the PSX version and have some sprites come out and do some kind of random stuff.

EDIT- And making the cancel button the run button would be uber sweet

It's just an idea from a fan...

While the story itself (sans plotholes) will remain the same the dialog is all being rewritten, taking the best parts from the two available translations and mixing with my own flair. Overall its longer than the original (yet compresses better...), gives expanded details, fills plotholes, uses better grammar, sounds natural (The one thing missing from a certain fan translation...), and is, I hate to boast, better than anything currently available.

Rather than screenshots (Which I'm too lazy to grab right now), I quote some dialog:

Biggs: There's Narshe...

Wedge: I can't believe they found
an esper there; it's been over a
thousand years since the
War of the Magi...

Biggs: Is it still alive?
Wedge: I've heard rumors that it is,
but nothing official.

Biggs: Why's this sorceress
with us?

I heard she killed fifty of our
soldiers riding MagiTek Armor in
under three minutes...
Scares me just thinking about it.

Wedge: Bah, that rumor again, she
only killed three soldiers that were
secretly supporting the Returners.

Besides, that Slave Crown on her
head stops conscious thought,
she'll follow our orders.

Girl: ...

Wedge: We'll attack from the East.
Move out!

Also, you might be interested to know that each "scene" of the opening prologue now uses two text boxes, which might not sound too good but I like the effect it gives.

That sounds pretty good, Dragonsbrethren. I know Ted Woolsey was really limited by the length of text (he had to write "3" instead of "three" in the original), so these additions should really flesh things out. He still did a great job with what he had.

Have you fixed the infamous 'frightful dragon' and 'monopoly on the treasure under the stairs' mistakes? Those were the only two tings Ted was genuinely wrong on, IIRC.

Agreed for the most part, some of his name changes seem pointless but reading interviews it seems like it wasn't always his fault. The funny thing is one little change, decapitalizing all the NPC names in the dialog, saves a ton of space in the script.

I'm not that far in my rewriting yet but trust me, they'll be fixed.

Speaking of rewriting, maybe I should start getting screenshots of the typos and start a blooper reel...

Locke: Thanks, moogles! We own you one!

Terra: Aren't you a scholar?
Scholar: Yes, yes I am, but any
sane man knows magic does not
exist, it's just a fairlytale...
Terra: ...

Merchant: Hey! You're going to
steal MY wine?! You're nothing but
a pretty thief!

Sailor: This shit ain't leaving port.

Terra: He's your brother?! I
thought he was a [thing]!

Okay, that last one wasn't a typo, just a placeholder Leno and I found hilarious

Edit: Oh the irony, I just had to fix a typo in one of the typos...

A couple minor screenshots, left is old and right is new:

It was a rather silly instruction that was cutting off the expanded item names before. Only two more areas that need attention now because of the expanded item names, and I'm currently working on the remaining menu one. The other is shops, which will be tended to later. Expect more screenshots later.

Alright, here are some samples of dialog, I tried to capture some of the better lines without spoiling the whole beginning of the hack (Which I probably did anyway...)

Don't worry, there won't be too many scenes like this:

Wow, everything looks great so far guys. FF6 is in my top 3 fav. RPG's ever and i'd love to play this hack even just for the excellent rewriting of the dialogue shown in all of those samples.

So in terms of "rebalancing", other then the more detailed things mentioned, are you going for an overall more challenging experience?

I know it's just a matter of opinion, but i'm not sure why some would think that the portraits or sprites would need to be changed. FF6 & Chrono Trigger quite obviously had the best looking portraits and sprites of all the RPG's on the SNES to me.

The portraits are really faded looking, if they used a sixteen color palette they'd look a lot better, aside from that they're fairly good.

I've never had a problem with the old portraits either; they look fine.

Did you make the font a little thinner? Or add a pixel of space between each letter? Something about it looks a little different from the regular GBA font.

The font in earlier screenshots had most of the letters widened by one pixel, the font in those screenshots is ripped directly from the GBA games.

There seemed to be a lot of hatred with the "old" new font we were using. Then again it seemed that there were equally as many people who liked it. However, two of the people that hated it made a bold explanation. Plus it gives me a chance to show off the screenie of it:

I agree, i just meant the actual artistic style in which they were done that i like.

About the font, to me everything that has been shown is atleast an improvement over the original. It's impossible to make it to everyones liking.

DarkSol and Gemini seem to hate the fixed width font, I changed the dialog font so I wouldn't have to have a one full text box and then one line, or even worse, on word in a second. As I said before I didn't switch fonts to please anyone except myself.

My only complaint with the portraits is that several of them look like a very different person than the character as portrayed by the sprites. Especially Terra. Ok, maybe mainly just Terra...

I mean, her hair color isn't even the same.

Well, then it would be logical to modify the sprite palettes to point to new locations, as the Portraits are more or less the 'official' look of the characters (sans exceptions like Terra's hair and stuff).

Would it be feasible to allocate more palettes so the sprites could use the intended colors, and not share too many of them (as is the case)?

I'm not sure, as there's only about 10 palettes or so for all of the characters. I'm not sure about that number at all, actually. I know Lord J's sprite editor allowed changing of the palettes for each sprite, but I can't even get that program to work anymore. I guess it lacked 2k/XP compatibility. Terii Senshi's sprite editor won't even let you change the palettes of the character sprites.

And I lost my train of thought...
