Lenophis, King Lettuce, and myself are all working on a massive Final Fantasy 6 project. The hack will be mainly a rebalancing, and it'll get rid of any "low level" aspect or something that shouldn't even be entirely possible to do. Characters will be strengthen/weakened, depending on the character, and the same goes for monsters.

There will also be many added bonuses to the hack, including this event change.

To compliment some new events, we're thinking about changing one item so the hack follows Tent/Cabin rules like FF4 and FF5. This is the Cabin sprite that I came up with:

Assuming all goes well, and not like it ever does, this is an added bonus that should happen.

Discuss...

(Yeah, I totally stole Lenophis' post from RHDN...)

It started as a base at ZMD as well.

I also seem to remember not wanting to come back here too... ahh well.

Just for consideration;

One thing that always bugged the hell out of me was that every character was capable of learning every spell in the game. It makes sense that characters like strago and terra could use magic, but sabin or shadow? that's stupid. Maybe limit which characters could learn certain (or any) spells would be something along the lines of what you're going for? The other characters could equip espers for the level up bonuses or sumthin. I know there's been talk of making a hack like this before, I'm not sure if anything ever came of it though.

I honestly already thought such things had already been produced by the likes of Mnrogar and Master ZED et al. All those hackers trying to keep the game from being "broken" as they put it. It's kind of maddening that no one is actually working on an actual remake anymore. I've heard some proposed ideas in the past, most of which sucked. FF6 probably isn't well suited to a sequel. A prequel, however, about the war of the magi, or some other story element like Locke's past, might be cool.

Dragonsbrethren, I see you inserted the GBA font instead of the classic Chicago font. I always liked Chicago, but I must admit that the new one looks good too.

What would really look excellent would be to insert the custom font used in the German translation. Now that looks great -- if you haven't seen it, I'll put together a screenshot.

Well, Square is concentrating on a glorified port right now. This hack will go over everything that in not balanced, such as:
  • cheap abuses like Wind God Gau/Gogo
  • bugs, Sketch was unusable thanks to this bug
  • powerhouses - physical damage formula was basically Level * Level , which was 75% of your damage
  • things that would make one side too powerful

Of course, we're gonna add as many bonuses to this hack as we can. Here's an added bonus:

His names is Skiffles, named for the sprite artist that took the time to draw this. How powerful he is, where he shows up, or what his true purpose for being is unknown.

As it stands, there are 7 additional monsters that are in place. There's room for 8 more as well if we wanted to use them all.

Needless to say, there's a lot to be done.

DB, any chance you could turn the tilde that separates the HP and the max HP back into a proper slash? Never understood why Square changed it to begin with.

Also, how realistic would it be to get the customization of Cyan's Sword Techs back in? The Japanese version had it.

I've seen the German translation's font, I was using that in my own hack until I decided to draw this font. The font isn't actually ripped from the GBA games, most characters are drawn wider to fit in with the menu font, which is still fixed-width.

Consider it done, as long as Lenophis approves. Actually, I though I already did that.

We're looking into restoring some features from the Japanese version, that's all I'm saying now.

Edit: Meh, what the hell, have some more screenies:

(These are old, ignore the damage, Leno hadn't balanced the monsters for the new damage formula yet)

That deep blue background for the text boxes looks great!

Could the numbers be one pixel taller? They look a bit small.

Did you add more MagiTek abilities?

You just gave me a great idea, why didn't I think of this sooner, no one liked that old chocobo background anyway:

I like them as they are, different numbers are higher/lower than others, just like the GBA games. By the way, here's the slash in battle:

Yeah, dump that useless chocobo background and insert something with some flavor. I always liked the "burnished copper" metal plates used in Chrono Trigger.

The numbers with descenders look nice but I still think they could be one pixel taller. Not a problem if you don't agree, though; it still looks better than most games' fonts. And the slash looks much better!

Are youn going to edit any of the minor translation mistakes, such as the "frightful dragon" and the "treasure under the stairway"?

All the dialog is being rewritten, using both the US release and Sky Render's retranslation as references, the combination of the two, plus our own input, makes the dialog much better. Annoying plotholes have been filled (Ever wonder why Edgar knew about the Esper at Narshe?) and translation errors have been corrected, I'm even censoring myself so it doesn't come out like some of the lamer dialog hacks out there.

Maybe it was an older version of the font? *shrug* In any event, yes I do approve.

Thanks, it's the best Guard I've never drawn

It's public opinion time, which window backgrounds are your favorites? We're planning on replacing some of them, we don't want to replace the most popular ones, if you don't post now you have no right to complain in the future.

The following windows have been enhanced:

1, 2, 4, 5

They will not be the same as you remember them, they will be better.

Just in case there are naysayers about this event, this is an avi of the event as it happens in the game (although it's been slightly modified since).

The cabin sprite was a test, if one person admitted it sucked in this thread it was going to be replaced by this one, based on the cabin from FF4:

Since no one commented on the original it's staying in.
