I've spilled tons of things on this keyboard over 8 years, and it never fails to unplug it, get the liquid out, and then blowdry it. In fact, enitre computers can survive being flooded (true story) if they're just allowed to dry out.
Turning them on while wet, on the other hand, creates gibberish-spewing monsters. |

(now at work with fully functional keyboard)
Yes, I could have immediately unplugged my keyboard, but out of a general dislike for that clicky piece of Microsoft annoyance, I left it to die. Excuse to get myself a non-clicky Logitech ergonomic keyboard, or even a less clicky Microsoft one. The keyboard's not done bad for being around the last five or so years and all the abuse I've hurled in its general direction |

My keyboard is a Microsoft one and it's not really clicky at all. I mean, it's sorta noisy but I prefer these a LOT more than soft, squishy ones. I've always been used to them.

Well, I'm hoping a newer Microsoft keyboard will be less clicky than the old one.
The old one was noisy as hell, and so is the Microsoft Natural Keyboard I use at work. I don't know if it's a "feature" of the Natural Keyboard, or not, but I am hoping that the newer ones will have a softer touch to them and make less bloody noise! If they don't, I'm going Logitech. |

Eh? To me, keyboards have alreways been relatively quiet. Well, next to mice, anyway. Mice can be... Loud when they click...
Also, random aside. At the current time, I'm lying down with my head to the side and my eyes closed. I'm tired for some reason... This has happened a lot lately. Time to see if there are any typos... It'll be funny if my hands turn out to be not aligned on the keyboard right. Nope. Fine. |

Well, I often find that standard keyboards (non ergonomic, ie, not the split keyboards) generally aren't as loud and clicky.
But all the ergonomic / split keyboards are horrendously noisy. I don't see any logical reason why they should be, but every one I've ever had has been the noisiest damn thing ever. Unfortunately I cannot use a standard keyboard for longer than half an hour before my wrists hurt like hell, so I deal with a clicky as hell keyboard. I am very much hoping that logitech make a non-clicky one as the Microsoft ones are all bloody noisy. |

Of course, this means that I can also do decently well on laptop keyboards, which are slightly different from desktop ones, and almost invariably much quieter (especially the spacebar). |

While the black is nice and all, does it really matter that much how it looks? It's a keyboard. As long as it's comfortable, decently quiet, and functional, I wouldn't think it would be too big a deal.
Of course, I never really look at the keyboard, anyway. |

Jeez, you people need to be more careful. I haven't spilled anything on a keyboard yet. Simple trick: Don't hold your glass over the desk.
I hate those ergonomic keyboards too. I have a standard one (a very nice Compaq) and I can use it for hours just fine. |

Yeah, ergonomic keyboards suck. I look like a fool trying to type on them because I don't type strictly home-row. I prefer laptop keyboards the most, very small and compact. The smaller, the better.

What about the keyboards on calculators and other small devices? They're way too small

Okay, yeah, I was talking about computer keyboards. I don't want a keyboard like there is on those new "sidekick" phones, where you have to pull out your reading glasses just to see what letter you're pushing.

Well, at any rate, any real keyboard is better than the PSP's...key entering thing. You have to manually scroll through a list of what you want to put in. It isn't all that slow (mostly thanks to the fact that the controls are good and not everything is in one place), and is all right once you get used to it, but it's still a sloth compared to anything else.

You know what... oddly, the keyboard on my laptop -- which causes my wrists to angle in on the same angle that upsets them on a regular keyboard -- does not worry me.
I'm not sure what it is about regular keyboards that do that to me, but I really cannot use them for any extended period of time. Although with physiotherapy it has become better than it once was. And meh... the keyboard on my computer came good despite me spilling water on it, and despite me not unplugging it and letting it dry as I know I should. It seems that my subconscious attempt to murder the keyboard failed. It also means I can't justify spending any money on a new keyboard, so I'll stick with the damned thing some longer. I just wish that the sound of me (or anyone) typing did NOT have to be so loud it echoes throughout my entire flat. One day I would like to have a housemate here to assist with the financial situation of renting, and I don't want to be disturbing said housemate with all the clickety clickety noises made by typing. |

Theoretically, there isn't enough electricity running through you average keyboard to cause it to short-circuit, so it makes sense that it works now that it has dried out. At least it wasn't something sugary that would stick up the keys.

I'm not a fan of noiseless keyboards but my old keyboard... it could wake up the dead if you typed too fast.
Trust me, though... water might be OK but ice tea on a keyboard will DEFINITELY kill it. |

Originally posted by Colin Yeah, this keyboard's pretty noisy. I'm not sure about wake the dead noisy, but noisier than an average keyboard. All the Microsoft natural keyboards seem to be a bit noisier in my experience. I have one at work and I'm the noisiest typer because of it. Clients can hear me typing and freak out at how fast I sound. I was hoping for something in a more normal noise range but considering it's okay now.. meh. I think I'll just use my laptop for a while anyways. |
