I can't see a keyboard going for any more than $20, unless you want a really fancy one

Last time a new keyboard was needed for this computer, it cost about $20, but I'm sure we could've found one for less. That's not a worry now though, as there are two keyboards that get used for this computer (the one I'm using to type this usually only gets used for playing StepMania or FlashFlashRevolution), then there are still three more in the little storage area of the cabinet that my Dad found on the side of the road (not the cabinet itslef - the keyboards) I don't care where he got them, as long as they work

Last time I spilled anything on a keyboard, it was apple cider at a friend of my parents' house. All I remember was that pressing keys simply made the computer beep, and, fearing that I'd ruined the whole thing, I ran down to the basement and hid in the crawlspace Someone came down a couple minutes after me, wanting to see if I'd lost any money (a $2 bill (yes, this happened back when there were such things)), but fortunately didn't say anything about the computer.

Anyways, have fun with your sort of working keyboard. You could always use the onscreen keyboard (and it seems you already have), but where's the fun in that?

Heh, at first I thought you were seriously hammered..

This is why I almost never drink anything in front of the computer. When I do, I usually try to be careful as to not spill anything. Of course, accidents may still happen, though.

I think at that point, it would cease to be spilling water on your keyboard, and become spilling water on your COMPUTER. Slightly more dangerous.

Well... Hope the new keyboard search works out. I haven't pulled that stunt, but I could see it happening to me.

Many, MANY years ago I managed to ruin a keyboard the same way.

Just replace "water" with "cold ice tea" and... yeah. Except NOTHING would work, that was the difference.

SWpil[l[injg water onj your l[aptop isw l[ikel[y to do FAR more damage thanj swpil[l[injg it onj a swtanjdal[onje keyboard.

Inj facdt, it DOESW do far more damage. Thisw hasw onjl[y damaged swome keyboard injternjal[sw -- I'vge sweenj fried l[aptop motherboardsw due to swpil[l[age. Winjdowsw wasw njot happy.

Anjd yup... keyboard swtil[l[ brokenj today, al[though swome cdharacdtersw havge improvged. nj njow isw onjl[y nj, njot 7nj anjymore....

Spilling water on your laptop is likely to do FAR more damage than spiling it on a standalone keyboard.

In fact, it DOES do far more damage. This has only damaged some keyboard internals -- I've seen fried laptop motherboards due to spillage. Windows was not happy.

And yup... keyboard still broken today, although some characters have improved. n now is only "nj", not "7nj" anjymore.... anjd my spacebar is back to normal!

Somehow I doubt the damage will just heal up by itself, Taryn... although you could take a hair dryer and cross your fingers.

I can actually read that gibberish.

This is probably a bit late to say it, but... wouldn't it have been better to, upon spilling water on the keyboard, unplugged it and let it dry off before using it? May have helped with some of the... breakage.

Of course, you may still want to take it apart and let it dry a bit, if there's still any water in it, which there may be. Can't guarantee it'll help anything, but... shouldn't hurt, if you're careful.

EDIT: About reading the gibberish... Would probably make you good at reading drunk-talk.

I know it shouldn't fix itself overnight. But it's remarkable that some keys work fine some of the time.

Hey....wtf... that sentence worked. And so did this one.

test...

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs

Okay, that should theoretically be impossible. What the hell is going on? It shouldn't be able to just fix itself like that.... crazy computer.

EDIT: It's STILL okay! WTF?! Except that it adds a ^ before a &

I had a keyboard break on me once, I forget why exactly. It just went crazy typing gibberish until I unplugged it.

I also managed to completely screw up my keyboard driver. It got to where every key would type about 12 characters, then eventually it started almost working except that it'd freak out when I pressed Space. Just had to reboot though.

I haven't rebooted, but it appears to have come good now?

Mostly. Oh well, I think I'm still getting a new keyboard tonight anyways. And a switch! Seeing as I realised last night just before bed that I have a fully-functional laptop too.... just no network connection for it.

This is odd, this keyboard wasn't working all of five minutes ago.

I am amazed you actually thought typing with it would be a good idea.

The CORRECT thing to do is to unplug it immediately, let it dry, and then clean it.

She did it for humor. Most of us found it funny, at least I did. When I used a desktop computer, I spilled a little of everything on the keyboard... never died though. I'm much more careful around my laptop.

Well, Taryn dried it by abusing the hell out of it, but I guess we can add "perservere" to the list of how to fix a wet keyboard.

Yes... Just what this board needed: an image of feces.

You can TRY the perservere trick, but... it tends to be too risky. Water and electronics do NOT mix, especially if there's a current going through the electronics, like when they're being used.
